Influence of Sheet Extensibility on Tearing Strength

This paper investigates the possibility that there is a relationship between the tearing properties and elongation properties of a sheet of paper. A lack of specific information in the literature and the advent of the in-plane tear method contributed to the need for work to be done in this area. Pulp was prepared according to TAPPI Standards and handsheets formed on a Noble And Wood sheet mold. After wet pressing, sheets were stretched with a hand made device to varying degrees, and dried in an oven in the stretched position. An Instron machine was used to determine the percent elongation, tensile energy absorption, and in-plane tear. An Elmendorf tear tester was used, also to determine tear. The results showed the in-plane tear to be very sensitive to elongation while the Elmendorf tear was not as sensitive. However, in both cases the tear did increase with an increase in sheet elongation. The reason for this occurring was due to more energy being dissipated throughout the sheet as the elongation increased

Comparison of Three Stiffness Testers

Stiffness is defined and some of the factors affecting stiffness are given. Also, the underlying principles upon which most stiffness testers are based are given. Three of the commonly used stiffness instruments are used for this comparison study. They are: Gurley, Smith-Taber, and the Clark. The correlation between the instruments is determined and the stiffness range that each instrument is best suited for is noted

Einfluss der Aufschlusstemperatur auf die morphologischen Eigenschaften von TMP aus Kiefernholz

Chips from pine wood were subjected to thermomechanical pulping (TMP) at 140 and 180 degrees C for 5 minutes, whereas the cooked chips were defibrated using a single disk pressurized refiner at the same temperatures (140 and 180 degrees C). The fibres were tested for some of their morphological properties including fibre length, fibre width, cell-wall thickness. Moreover, the fine fibre fraction (zero fibres) and the content of splinters were also estimated. The results reveal, that increasing the temperature during thermomechanical pulping decreases the fibre length, the cell width and the fibre wall thickness. It also increases the amount of fine fibres and increases the curl factor

Westdeutsche Industrie: Trotz konjunktureller Eintrübung weiteres Investitionsplus geplant

Nach den Ergebnissen der aktuellen Investitionserhebung haben die Industrieunternehmen in Westdeutschland ihre Investitionen 2007 deutlich erhöht. Mit 43 Mrd. € lag das Investitionsniveau (nominal und real) gut 10% über dem von 2006. Der Investitionsanstieg war breit angelegt. Die meisten Branchen erhöhten ihre Investitionen, nur vereinzelt kam es zu Kürzungen gegenüber 2006. Trotz der vermehrten Anzeichen für eine konjunkturelle Eintrübung werden nach dem derzeitigen Planungsstand die Investitionen im westdeutschen verarbeitenden Gewerbe 2008 nochmals zunehmen. Die Meldungen der Unternehmen ergaben für 2008 einen Investitionsanstieg von (nominal und real) knapp 9%. Wie die aktuellen Erhebungsergebnisse zeigen, beabsichtigen die Unternehmen mit ihren Investitionen in erster Linie, das bestehende Produktionsprogramm zu erweitern bzw. zu verändern.
