    Interoperability between Multimedia Collections for Content and Metadata-Based Searching

    Artiste is a European project developing a cross-collection search system for art galleries and museums. It combines image content retrieval with text based retrieval and uses RDF mappings in order to integrate diverse databases. The test sites of the Louvre, Victoria and Albert Museum, Uffizi Gallery and National Gallery London provide their own database schema for existing metadata, avoiding the need for migration to a common schema. The system will accept a query based on one museum’s fields and convert them, through an RDF mapping into a form suitable for querying the other collections. The nature of some of the image processing algorithms means that the system can be slow for some computations, so the system is session-based to allow the user to return to the results later. The system has been built within a J2EE/EJB framework, using the Jboss Enterprise Application Server

    Shadows : uma nova forma de representar documentos

Isto dificulta os processos de troca, anotação e recuperação de documentos. Enquanto mecanismos de recuperação da informação concentram-se apenas no processamento de características textuais (análise de corpus), estratégias de anotação de documentos procuram concentrar-se em formatos específicos ou exigem que o documento a ser anotado siga padrões de interoperabilidade - definidos por esquemas. Este trabalho apresenta o nosso esforço para lidar com estes problemas, propondo uma solução mais flexível para estes e outros processos. Ao invés de tentar modificar ou converter um documento, ou concentrar-se apenas nas características textuais deste, a estratégia descrita nesta dissertação propõe a elaboração de um descritor intermediário - denominado shadow - que representa e sumariza aspectos e elementos da estrutura e do conteúdo de um documento que sejam relevantes a um dado domínio. Shadows não se restringem à descrição de características textuais de um documento, preservando, por exemplo, a hierarquia entre os elementos e descrevendo outros tipos de artefatos, como artefatos multimídia. Além disto, Shadows podem ser anotados e armazenados em bancos de dados, permitindo consultas sobre a estrutura e conteúdo de documentos, independentemente de formatosAbstract: Document production tools are present everywhere, resulting in an exponential growth of increasingly complex, distributed and heterogeneous documents. This hampers document exchange, as well as their annotation and retrieval. While information retrieval mechanisms concentrate on textual features (corpus analysis), annotation approaches either target specific formats or require that a document follows interoperable standards - defined via schemas. This work presents our effort to handle these problems, providing a more flexible solution. Rather than trying to modify or convert the document itself, or to target only textual characteristics, the strategy described in this work is based on an intermediate descriptor - the document shadow. A shadow represents domain-relevant aspects and elements of both structure and content of a given document. Shadows are not restricted to the description of textual features, but also concern other elements, such as multimedia artifacts.     Enrichment of raw sensor data to enable high-level queries

    Sensor networks are increasingly used across various application domains. Their usage has the advantage of automated, often continuous, monitoring of activities and events. Ubiquitous sensor networks detect location of people and objects and their movement. In our research, we employ a ubiquitous sensor network to track the movement of players in a tennis match. By doing so, our goal is to create a detailed analysis of how the match progressed, recording points scored, games and sets, and in doing so, greatly reduce the eort of coaches and players who are required to study matches afterwards. The sensor network is highly efficient as it eliminates the need for manual recording of the match. However, it generates raw data that is unusable by domain experts as it contains no frame of reference or context and cannot be analyzed or queried. In this work, we present the UbiQuSE system of data transformers which bridges the gap between raw sensor data and the high-level requirements of domain specialists such as the tennis coach

    A search and retrieval framework for the management of copyrighted audiovisual content

    This paper presents a search and retrieval framework that enables the management of Intellectual Property in the World Wide Web. This twofold framework helps users to detect digital rights infringements of their copyrighted content. In order to detect possible copyright infringments, first the system crawls the Web to search replicas of user’s images, and later evaluates if the copies have been taken respecting the terms stated by the owner. On the other hand, this framework also helps users in finding something interesting in the Web. It will provide copyrighted content to users according to their preferences and to intellectual property rights integrating search and retrieval with digital rights management tools

    An Architecture for TV Content Distributed Search and Retrieval Using the MPEG Query Format (MPQF)

    Traditional broadcasting of TV contents begins to coexist with new models of user aware content delivery. The definition of interoperable interfaces for precise content search and retrieval between the different involved parties is a requirement for the deployment of the new audiovisual distribution services. This paper presents the design of an architecture based on the MPEG Query Format (MPQF) for providing the necessary interoperability to deploy distributed audiovisual content search and retrieval networks between content producers, distributors, aggregators and consumer devices. A service-oriented architecture based on Web Services technology is defined. This paper also presents how the architecture can be applied to a real scenario, the XAC (Xarxa IP Audiovisual de Catalunya, Audiovisual IP Network of Catalonia). As far as we know, this is the first paper to apply MPQF to TV Content Distributed Search and Retrieval

    Metadata extraction from text in soccer domain

    Event detection is a crucial part for soccer video searching and querying. The event detection could be done by video content itself or from a structured or semi structured text files gathered from sports web sites. In this paper, we present an approach of metadata extraction from match reports for soccer domain. The UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League Match Reports are downloaded from the web site of UEFA by a web-crawler. Using regular expressions we annotate these match reports and then extract events from annotated match reports. Extracted events are saved in an MPEG-7 file. We present an interface that is used to query the events in the MPEG-7 match corpus. If an associated match video is available, the video portions that correspond to the found events could be played. © 2008 IEEE

    Vereinheitlichte Anfrageverarbeitung in heterogenen und verteilten Multimediadatenbanken

    Multimedia retrieval is an essential part of today's world. This situation is observable in industrial domains, e.g., medical imaging, as well as in the private sector, visible by activities in manifold Social Media platforms. This trend led to the creation of a huge environment of multimedia information retrieval services offering multimedia resources for almost any user requests. Indeed, the encompassed data is in general retrievable by (proprietary) APIs and query languages, but unfortunately a unified access is not given due to arising interoperability issues between those services. In this regard, this thesis focuses on two application scenarios, namely a medical retrieval system supporting a radiologist's workflow, as well as an interoperable image retrieval service interconnecting diverse data silos. The scientific contribution of this dissertation is split in three different parts: the first part of this thesis improves the metadata interoperability issue. Here, major contributions to a community-driven, international standardization have been proposed leading to the specification of an API and ontology to enable a unified annotation and retrieval of media resources. The second part issues a metasearch engine especially designed for unified retrieval in distributed and heterogeneous multimedia retrieval environments. This metasearch engine is capable of being operated in a federated as well as autonomous manner inside the aforementioned application scenarios. The remaining third part ensures an efficient retrieval due to the integration of optimization techniques for multimedia retrieval in the overall query execution process of the metasearch engine.Egal ob im industriellen Bereich oder auch im Social Media - multimediale Daten nehmen eine immer zentralere Rolle ein. Aus diesem fortlaufendem Entwicklungsprozess entwickelten sich umfangreiche Informationssysteme, die Daten für zahlreiche Bedürfnisse anbieten. Allerdings ist ein einheitlicher Zugriff auf jene verteilte und heterogene Landschaft von Informationssystemen in der Praxis nicht gewährleistet. Und dies, obwohl die Datenbestände meist über Schnittstellen abrufbar sind. Im Detail widmet sich diese Arbeit mit der Bearbeitung zweier Anwendungsszenarien. Erstens, einem medizinischen System zur Diagnoseunterstützung und zweitens einer interoperablen, verteilten Bildersuche. Der wissenschaftliche Teil der vorliegenden Dissertation gliedert sich in drei Teile: Teil eins befasst sich mit dem Problem der Interoperabilität zwischen verschiedenen Metadatenformaten. In diesem Bereich wurden maßgebliche Beiträge für ein internationales Standardisierungsverfahren entwickelt. Ziel war es, einer Ontologie, sowie einer Programmierschnittstelle einen vereinheitlichten Zugriff auf multimediale Informationen zu ermöglichen. In Teil zwei wird eine externe Metasuchmaschine vorgestellt, die eine einheitliche Anfrageverarbeitung in heterogenen und verteilten Multimediadatenbanken ermöglicht. In den Anwendungsszenarien wird zum einen auf eine föderative, als auch autonome Anfrageverarbeitung eingegangen. Abschließend werden in Teil drei Techniken zur Optimierung von verteilten multimedialen Anfragen präsentiert
