The Problem of Own and Alien in Dovlatov's Cycle “Suitcase”

    Get PDF
The article deals with various aspects of the reception of the concepts "Own" and "Alien" in S. Dovlatov's "Suitcase" cycle: material, ideological, philosophical, socio - and ethnocultural, etc. Special attention is paid to the reception of the categories of Soviet and official as not-Own. An important component of the problem of Own and Alien in the "Suitcase" cycle is also the attitude of the hero-narrator to Soviet and American culture. Widely articulated desire to associate his biography and professional activities allows us to conclude about the hero’s attempt to position himself as a person outside the Soviet system. The appeal to the realities of culture helps the author to identify their value orientations and express their attitude to people and the world. Certainly, the significance of the problem of the correlation of Own and Alien in the literary heritage of S. Dovlatov is predetermined by his status as a dissident writer and an immigrant writer. However, the writer is not characterized by a tendency toward the antithetic character of creating an opposition between Own and Alien. In the art world of S. Dovlatov, there are no types of "stigmatized Alien" and "hostile Alien". Moreover, the model of his interaction with the world is defined as "Own among your Own"

Handwriting is individualistic. The uniqueness of shape and style of handwriting can be used to identify the significant features in authenticating the author of writing. Acquiring these significant features leads to an important research in Writer Identification domain where to find the unique features of individual which also known as Individuality of Handwriting. This paper proposes an improved Sequential Forward Floating Selection method besides the exploration of significant features for invarianceness of authorship from global shape features by using various wrapper feature selection methods. The promising results show that the proposed method is worth to receive further exploration in identifying the handwritten authorship

Expression, representation and drawing in early childhood

    Get PDF
Using detailed longitudinal studies of 43 children, the thesis describes the onset and development of important modes of expression and representation, in children 0 - 5 years of age, and focuses especial attention on one of those modes - drawing. The study shows that the beginnings of drawing, far from being haphazard, meaningless scribblings are, on the contrary, highly intentioned acts which have structure and organisation. Whilst not extensive, the main findings of the present research are supported by other recent studies made independently but in parallel to that of the present author. The work shows that drawing development cannot be accounted for solely in terms of imitation of cultural models, nor in terms of motor skills development alone. Rather, the present account shows that infants use mark-making and drawing as one member of a family of early symbolic modes which they spontaneously generate to form descriptions of reality. The study traces drawing development from its origin in early infancy - in the actions the infant performs upon objects in the physical environment, and also in the actions performed within an interpersonal, psychological environment formed between infant and caregiver. Using detailed micro-analysis of recorded observations (video, film and still-photographic techniques were employed, as well as continuous transcription of these in longhand-journals) a description of drawing development is constructed which shows the child moving through a series of modes of representation, each having its own internal infra-structure and powerful meanings for the child. The study shows that at every level, from the earliest mark-making, to the graphic descriptions of objects and events, the child is generating powerful representational and expressive modes which many research paradigms and methodologies have missed but which in fact play an essential part in the development of cognition and affect. The important implications of this for education are considered

Idiolect – idiostyle – Sociolect: Differentiation and Interrelation of Linguistic Terms

    Get PDF
The relevance of the study is conditioned upon the importance of distinguishing the concepts of idiolect, idiostyle, and sociolect in linguistic science, understanding the processes occurring at the border of the terminological field, and using psychological, sociological, and communicative aspects to understand the mechanisms of building these concepts. The purpose of the study is a comparative analysis of linguistic terms based on various criteria, in particular the number of communicants (speakers), social marking or neutrality of the lexical layer, the purpose, conditions, and purposes of the development of certain language layers, the features of the design of lexemes at different levels of the national language (phonological, phonetic, grammatical, morphological, stylistic, syntactic). The main method of research is a theoretical approach to understanding the concepts of idiolect, idiostyle, and sociolect, searching for relationships between them and differences. This study discloses the main intralingual and extralingual factors that contribute to the development, identification, or isolation of these concepts, the features of the coexistence of these terms in contexts with different stylistic content, considers the mechanisms by which the boundaries between these concepts can be outlined, focuses on modern research on the emergence of idiolects, idiostyles, and sociolects. The materials presented in this study will help to further study terminological processes in depth, in particular, contextual and conceptological, global interdisciplinary influences in the national space, mechanisms of isolation and structuring of certain terms to expand or narrow already known meanings

Bio-Inspired Generalized Global Shape Approach for Writer Identification

    Get PDF
Abstract—Writer identification is one of the areas in pattern recognition that attract many researchers to work in, particularly in forensic and biometric application, where the writing style can be used as biometric features for authenticating an identity. The challenging task in writer identification is the extraction of unique features, in which the individualistic of such handwriting styles can be adopted into bio-inspired generalized global shape for writer identification. In this paper, the feasibility of generalized global shape concept of complimentary binding in Artificial Immune System (AIS) for writer identification is explored. An experiment based on the proposed framework has been conducted to proof the validity and feasibility of the proposed approach for off-line writer identification

Rethinking the Canon: Nonconformist Soviet Classics in Post-Soviet Perspective

In the four-plus decades since Stalin\u27s death, the Soviet literary canon has undergone a series of changes. Thus, Fedor Dostoyevsky, Konstantin Leontiev, and Apollon Grigoriev, seen in all their complexity, gradually resumed their pride of place in nineteenth-century literary history, while Gogol was allowed to be more of a conservative thinker and modernist stylist than during the period of High Stalinism. Twentieth-century literature welcomed back the early Vladimir Maiakovsky, then all of Aleksandr Blok (previously represented in the Soviet canon only by his The Twelve), and finally the entire Silver Age. The list of writers now rehabilitated, republished, and recognized included (in alphabetical order) Anna Akhmatova, Isaak Babel, Mikhail Bulgakov, Ivan Bunin, Nikolai Gumiliev, Leonid Dobychin, Osip Mandelstam, Vladimir Nabokov, the Oberiu writers, Boris Pasternak, Boris Pilniak, Andrei Platonov, Aleksei Remizov, Vasilii Rozanov, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Marina Tsvetaeva, Konstantin Vaginov, Mikhail Zoshchenko -- writers who had emigrated , been executed, or died in the Gulag, committed suicide, been banned. or otherwise fallen silent and thus, to use Roman Jakobson’s apt formulation, had been in one way or another “squandered” by the Soviet system
