Ensuring Cyber-Security in Smart Railway Surveillance with SHIELD
Modern railways feature increasingly complex embedded computing systems for surveillance, that are moving towards fully wireless smart-sensors. Those systems are aimed at monitoring system status from a physical-security viewpoint, in order to detect intrusions and other environmental anomalies. However, the same systems used for physical-security surveillance are vulnerable to cyber-security threats, since they feature distributed hardware and software architectures often interconnected by ‘open networks’, like wireless channels and the Internet. In this paper, we show how the integrated approach to Security, Privacy and Dependability (SPD) in embedded systems provided by the SHIELD framework (developed within the EU funded pSHIELD and nSHIELD research projects) can be applied to railway surveillance systems in order to measure and improve their SPD level. SHIELD implements a layered architecture (node, network, middleware and overlay) and orchestrates SPD mechanisms based on ontology models, appropriate metrics and composability. The results of prototypical application to a real-world demonstrator show the effectiveness of SHIELD and justify its practical applicability in industrial settings
Data fusion strategy for precise vehicle location for intelligent self-aware maintenance systems
Abstract— Nowadays careful measurement applications are
handed over to Wired and Wireless Sensor Network. Taking
the scenario of train location as an example, this would lead to
an increase in uncertainty about position related to sensors
with long acquisition times like Balises, RFID and
Transponders along the track. We take into account the data
without any synchronization protocols, for increase the
accuracy and reduce the uncertainty after the data fusion
algorithms. The case studies, we have analysed, derived from
the needs of the project partners: train localization, head of an
auger in the drilling sector localization and the location of
containers of radioactive material waste in a reprocessing
nuclear plant. They have the necessity to plan the maintenance
operations of their infrastructure basing through architecture
that taking input from the sensors, which are localization and
diagnosis, maps and cost, to optimize the cost effectiveness and
reduce the time of operation
Wireless Power Transfer for High-precision Position Detection of Railroad Vehicles
Detection of vehicle position is critical for successful operation of
intelligent transportation system. In case of railroad transportation systems,
position information of railroad vehicles can be detected by GPS, track
circuits, and so on. In this paper, position detection based on tags onto
sleepers of the track is investigated. Position information stored in the tags
is read by a reader placed at the bottom of running railroad vehicle. Due to
limited capacity of battery or its alternative in the tags, power required for
transmission of position information to the reader is harvested by the tags
from the power wirelessly transferred from the reader. Basic mechanism in
wireless power transfer is magnetic induction and power transfer efficiency
according to the relative location of the reader to a tag is discussed with
simulation results. Since power transfer efficiency is significantly affected
by the ferromagnetic material (steel) at the bottom of the railroad vehicle and
the track, magnetic beam shaping by ferrite material is carried out. With the
ferrite material for magnetic beam shaping, degradation of power transfer
efficiency due to the steel is substantially reduced. Based on the experimental
results, successful wireless power transfer to the tag coil is possible when
transmitted power from the reader coil is close to a few watts.Comment: 2015 IEEE Power, Communication and Information Technology Conference

Towards the Internet of Smart Trains: A Review on Industrial IoT-Connected Railways
[Abstract] Nowadays, the railway industry is in a position where it is able to exploit the opportunities created by the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and enabling communication technologies under the paradigm of Internet of Trains. This review details the evolution of communication technologies since the deployment of GSM-R, describing the main alternatives and how railway requirements, specifications and recommendations have evolved over time. The advantages of the latest generation of broadband communication systems (e.g., LTE, 5G, IEEE 802.11ad) and the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for the railway environment are also explained together with the strategic roadmap to ensure a smooth migration from GSM-R. Furthermore, this survey focuses on providing a holistic approach, identifying scenarios and architectures where railways could leverage better commercial IIoT capabilities. After reviewing the main industrial developments, short and medium-term IIoT-enabled services for smart railways are evaluated. Then, it is analyzed the latest research on predictive maintenance, smart infrastructure, advanced monitoring of assets, video surveillance systems, railway operations, Passenger and Freight Information Systems (PIS/FIS), train control systems, safety assurance, signaling systems, cyber security and energy efficiency. Overall, it can be stated that the aim of this article is to provide a detailed examination of the state-of-the-art of different technologies and services that will revolutionize the railway industry and will allow for confronting today challenges.Galicia. Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment
In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in
the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing
technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the
increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of
wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container
terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual
effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality
of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can
be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most
systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors,
but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the
reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and
what remains to be addressed in the future
Context-Awareness Enhances 5G Multi-Access Edge Computing Reliability
The fifth generation (5G) mobile telecommunication network is expected to
support Multi- Access Edge Computing (MEC), which intends to distribute
computation tasks and services from the central cloud to the edge clouds.
Towards ultra-responsive, ultra-reliable and ultra-low-latency MEC services,
the current mobile network security architecture should enable a more
decentralized approach for authentication and authorization processes. This
paper proposes a novel decentralized authentication architecture that supports
flexible and low-cost local authentication with the awareness of context
information of network elements such as user equipment and virtual network
functions. Based on a Markov model for backhaul link quality, as well as a
random walk mobility model with mixed mobility classes and traffic scenarios,
numerical simulations have demonstrated that the proposed approach is able to
achieve a flexible balance between the network operating cost and the MEC
reliability.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Access on Feb. 02, 201
