Fieldwork research however constantly report that empirical data utterly deviate from this mathematical function. This chapter scrutinizes network forcing of diffusion process. The departure of empirical data from the logistic function is explained by social network discreteness, heterogeneity and anisotropy. New indices are proposed. Results are illustrated by empirical data from an original study of knowledge diffusion in the medieval academic network

    Complex Systems: Nonlinearity and Structural Complexity in spatially extended and discrete systems

    Resumen Esta Tesis doctoral aborda el estudio de sistemas de muchos elementos (sistemas discretos) interactuantes. La fenomenología presente en estos sistemas esta dada por la presencia de dos ingredientes fundamentales: (i) Complejidad dinámica: Las ecuaciones del movimiento que rigen la evolución de los constituyentes son no lineales de manera que raramente podremos encontrar soluciones analíticas. En el espacio de fases de estos sistemas pueden coexistir diferentes tipos de trayectorias dinámicas (multiestabilidad) y su topología puede variar enormemente dependiendo de dos parámetros usados en las ecuaciones. La conjunción de dinámica no lineal y sistemas de muchos grados de libertad (como los que aquí se estudian) da lugar a propiedades emergentes como la existencia de soluciones localizadas en el espacio, sincronización, caos espacio-temporal, formación de patrones, etc... (ii) Complejidad estructural: Se refiere a la existencia de un alto grado de aleatoriedad en el patrón de las interacciones entre los componentes. En la mayoría de los sistemas estudiados esta aleatoriedad se presenta de forma que la descripción de la influencia del entorno sobre un único elemento del sistema no puede describirse mediante una aproximación de campo medio. El estudio de estos dos ingredientes en sistemas extendidos se realizará de forma separada (Partes I y II de esta Tesis) y conjunta (Parte III). Si bien en los dos primeros casos la fenomenología introducida por cada fuente de complejidad viene siendo objeto de amplios estudios independientes a lo largo de los últimos años, la conjunción de ambas da lugar a un campo abierto y enormemente prometedor, donde la interdisciplinariedad concerniente a los campos de aplicación implica un amplio esfuerzo de diversas comunidades científicas. En particular, este es el caso del estudio de la dinámica en sistemas biológicos cuyo análisis es difícil de abordar con técnicas exclusivas de la Bioquímica, la Física Estadística o la Física Matemática. En definitiva, el objetivo marcado en esta Tesis es estudiar por separado dos fuentes de complejidad inherentes a muchos sistemas de interés para, finalmente, estar en disposición de atacar con nuevas perspectivas problemas relevantes para la Física de procesos celulares, la Neurociencia, Dinámica Evolutiva, etc..

    On the assessment of surface urban heat island: size, urban form, and seasonality

    To what extent cities can be made sustainable under the mega-trends of urbanization and climate change remains a matter of unresolved scientific debate. Our inability in answering this question lies partly in the deficient knowledge regarding pivotal humanenvironment interactions. Regarded as the most well documented anthropogenic climate modification, the urban heat island (UHI) effect – the warmth of urban areas relative to the rural hinterland – has raised great public health concerns globally. Worse still, heat waves are being observed and are projected to increase in both frequency and intensity, which further impairs the well-being of urban dwellers. Albeit with a substantial increase in the number of publications on UHI in the recent decades, the diverse urban-rural definitions applied in previous studies have remarkably hampered the general comparability of results achieved. In addition, few studies have attempted to synergize the land use data and thermal remote sensing to systematically assess UHI and its contributing factors. Given these research gaps, this work presents a general framework to systematically quantify the UHI effect based on an automated algorithm, whereby cities are defined as clusters of maximum spatial continuity on the basis of land use data, with their rural hinterland being defined analogously. By combining land use data with spatially explicit surface skin temperatures from satellites, the surface UHI intensity can be calculated in a consistent and robust manner. This facilitates monitoring, benchmarking, and categorizing UHI intensities for cities across scales. In light of this innovation, the relationship between city size and UHI intensity has been investigated, as well as the contributions of urban form indicators to the UHI intensity. This work delivers manifold contributions to the understanding of the UHI, which have complemented and advanced a number of previous studies. Firstly, a log-linear relationship between surface UHI intensity and city size has been confirmed among the 5,000 European cities. The relationship can be extended to a log-logistic one, when taking a wider range of small-sized cities into account. Secondly, this work reveals a complex interplay between UHI intensity and urban form. City size is found to have the strongest influence on the UHI intensity, followed by the fractality and the anisometry. However, their relative contributions to the surface UHI intensity depict a pronounced regional heterogeneity, indicating the importance of considering spatial patterns of UHI while implementing UHI adaptation measures. Lastly, this work presents a novel seasonality of the UHI intensity for individual clusters in the form of hysteresis-like curves, implying a phase shift between the time series of UHI intensity and background temperatures. Combining satellite observation and urban boundary layer simulation, the seasonal variations of UHI are assessed from both screen and skin levels. Taking London as an example, this work ascribes the discrepancies between the seasonality observed at different levels mainly to the peculiarities of surface skin temperatures associated with the incoming solar radiation. In addition, the efforts in classifying cities according to their UHI characteristics highlight the important role of regional climates in determining the UHI. This work serves as one of the first studies conducted to systematically and statistically scrutinize the UHI. The outcomes of this work are of particular relevance for the overall spatial planning and regulation at meso- and macro levels in order to harness the benefits of rapid urbanization, while proactively minimizing its ensuing thermal stress

    Untangling hotel industry’s inefficiency: An SFA approach applied to a renowned Portuguese hotel chain

    The present paper explores the technical efficiency of four hotels from Teixeira Duarte Group - a renowned Portuguese hotel chain. An efficiency ranking is established from these four hotel units located in Portugal using Stochastic Frontier Analysis. This methodology allows to discriminate between measurement error and systematic inefficiencies in the estimation process enabling to investigate the main inefficiency causes.     Space-temporal analysis of radiocarbon evidence and associated archaeological record: from Danube to Ebro rivers and from Bronze to Iron Ages

    In this thesis we have approached the historical problem of cultural standardization at the end of Bronze Age. In particular, we have analyzed phenomena of expansion and adoption of innovation which took place in the 2nd millennium BC in Europe. To tackle this issue, we have decided to follow a quantitative approach. From a methodological point of view, the starting point has been the development of the EUBAR database which collects more than 1700 14C dates of georeferenced archaeological contexts, defined by a set of variables of presence/absence of some functional types. The analyzed region embraces an area from the Ebro to the Danube River (namely, NE Iberian Peninsula, Southern France, Northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Southern Germany); the time-span is 1750-750 BC. The critical analysis of each dating, concerning the taphonomic and stratigraphic information of each sample, represents the backbone of the database. The first goal has been to propose a new chronological model based on Bayesian statistical analysis of 14C dates from reliable archaeological contexts in northern Italy and southern France. Although the number of reliable dates for macroscale research remains low, it has been possible to develop four different models with the software OxCal, two contiguous ones and two sequential ones. Focusing on descriptive statistics, the 14C chronology of northern Italy seemed to be slightly higher than the conventional one, while that of southern France is confirmed by the Bayesian models. In both cases, the results claim the absolute necessity of an increase in the amount of 14C dates from selected archaeological contexts. The second goal has been to model demographic continuities and discontinuities between 1800 and 800 BC; the last term is due to the “Hallstatt disaster”. Through the analysis of frecuency of radiocarbon dates collected in the EUBAR database we have infered population stationarity on a macro-scale from the Danube to the Ebro. On the contrary, summed probability calibrated distributions (SCPDs) and histograms of medians show that episodes of change express locally. The third goal has been to detect three phenomena of adoption of innovation which took place in the 2nd millennium BC, i.e. cremation burials, vases with handles with vertical expansion and metal knives. In particular we have been able to observe that the adoption of cremation rite within the Urnfield culture followed a positive exponential trend on a macro-scale with different beginnings in different regions. Such an assumption allowed modeling the spatio-temporal diffusion of cremation burials which has shown to be characterized by a clear east to west gradient from the North-Western Alpine region to the NE of Iberian Peninsula. The same east to west directivity has been recognized for vases with handles with vertical expansion. Eventually, the thesis proposes the architecture of an Agent Based Model for explaining phenomena of diffusion and adoption of innovation in early complex societies
