Proceedings of Universiti Sains Malaysia International Conference on Social Sciences 2015 - Touching Lives, Bridging Society
A society and people in general have always been the major focus of any study in the field of
social sciences. Given the conflicts, competition, pressures, tensions and differences that are
prevalent and persisting around us in today‘s society, social scientists can have a great
potential to touch the lives of all human beings in many different societies. By doing so, they
too can bridge the gaps that are seen to be widening between and within societies today. The
field of social sciences critically examines and analyses elements of human existence, their
infinite combinations of interactions, their value systems, traditions, culture, options and
choices and practices. This is reflected in a broad range of disciplines which include
anthropology and sociology, development studies, economics, political science, psychology
and social work.
The proceedings of this conference includes papers presented at the USM-International
Conference on Social Sciences (USM-ICOSS) 2015 which was hosted with the aptly noble
theme ―Touching Lives and Bridging Society‖ and held from 27 - 28 August 2015 at the
Rainbow Paradise Beach Resort, Penang, Malaysia. This conference is solely organized by
the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia
Globalization and Labour in the Twenty-First Century
Globalisation has adversely affected working-class organisation and mobilisation; but international labour movement demobilisation is not necessarily an irreversible trend. Globalisation has prompted workers and their organisations to find new ways to mobilise. This book examines international labour movement opposition to globalisation. It chronicles and critically scrutinizes the emergence of distinctively new forms of labour movement organisation and mobilisation that constitute creative initiatives on the part of labour, which present capitalism with fresh challenges. The author identifies eight characteristics of globalisation that have proven problematic to workers and their organisations and describes and analyses how they have responded to these challenges since 1990 and especially in the past decade. In particular, it focuses attention on new types of labour movement organisation and mobilisation that are not simply defensive reactions but are offensive and innovative responses that compel corporations to behave more responsively and responsibly towards employees and society at large. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of globalisation, political economy, labour politics, economics, Marxism and sociology of work
Digitalization and Development
This book examines the diffusion of digitalization and Industry 4.0 technologies in Malaysia by focusing on the ecosystem critical for its expansion. The chapters examine the digital proliferation in major sectors of agriculture, manufacturing, e-commerce and services, as well as the intermediary organizations essential for the orderly performance of socioeconomic agents.
The book incisively reviews policy instruments critical for the effective and orderly development of the embedding organizations, and the regulatory framework needed to quicken the appropriation of socioeconomic synergies from digitalization and Industry 4.0 technologies. It highlights the importance of collaboration between government, academic and industry partners, as well as makes key recommendations on how to encourage adoption of IR4.0 technologies in the short- and long-term.
This book bridges the concepts and applications of digitalization and Industry 4.0 and will be a must-read for policy makers seeking to quicken the adoption of its technologies
Knowledge Solutions: Tools, Methods, and Approaches to Drive Development Forward and Enhance Its Effects
[Excerpt] Today, sustainable competitive advantage derives from strenuous efforts to identify, cultivate, and exploit an organization’s core competencies. This calls for relentless design of strategic architecture, deployment of competence carriers, and commitment to collaborate across silos. Put simply, core competencies are the product of collective learning: their tangible fruits are composite packages of products and services that anticipate and meet demand.
Knowledge is what you learn from experience before, during, and after the event. Since it is both a thing and a flow, the best way to manage knowledge is to cater at all times to the environment in which it can be identified, created, stored, shared, and used. Tools, methods, and approaches are needed to enable that.
And so, to drive development forward and enhance its effects, the Asian Development Bank has, since 2008, published the Knowledge Solutions series, available at www.adb.org/knowledgesolutions. It aims to build competencies in the areas of strategy development, management techniques, collaboration mechanisms, knowledge sharing and learning, and knowledge capture and storage—all of which are essential to high-performance organizations

Digital transformation at turismo de Portugal
This direct research project aims to provide Turismo de Portugal (TdP) with a digital transformation framework and an industry based overview of Tourism and Digital Transformation trends, through an action pack of initiatives to be developed. A benchmark of digital transformation best practices in the Tourism industry was collected and a digital maturity framework applied in TdP to position their status through a short survey. Collaboration, poor systems integration, tool complexity and duplication, and process-based organization, were found to be major issues. Given the current reality, change management practices, associated with a technological and strategical alignment, were considered to attain a successful digitalization pilot
