WHAT'S WRONG WITH SCIENCE ? : Modeling the collective discovery processes with the Nobel Game

There is an increasing pressure on scholars to publish to further or sustain a career in academia. Governments and funding agencies are greedy of indicators based on scientific production to measure science output. But what exactly do we know about the relation between publication levels and advances in science ? How do social dynamics and norms interfere with the quality of the scientific production ? Are there different regimes of scientific dynamics ? The present study proposes some concepts to think about scientific dynamics, through the modeling of the relation between science policies and scholars' exploration-exploitation dilemmas. Passing, we analyze in detail the effects of the " publish or perish " policy, that turns out to have no significant effects in the developments of emerging scientific fields, while having detrimental impacts on the quality of the production of mature fields

On the Problem of Dependent People: hyperbolic discounting in Atlantic Canadian island jurisdictions

Prince Edward Island's Economics, Statistics and Federal Fiscal Relations Division's 33rd Annual Statistical Review reports the total value of 2006 fish landings was CAD $166.6 MM. This paper discloses a preliminary finding that the actual total value of fish landings for 2006 was approximately CAD 416.5 MM. Furthermore, this discourse submits that this entrenched systemic error has been consistently generated for all 33 years that the Annual Statistical Review has been published. Moreover, this systemic error creates a ripple-effect and promotes bias through all relative natural resource valuations. This significant conjecture is presented within an institutional context which serves as the foundation for this error generation, including other errors associated with The Problem of Induction and The Tragedy of the Commons. Within this broad context, this paper focuses upon deficient resource valuation methods, especially as they relate to dependency and valuation errors. Our analysis contrasts the failure of fishery management amongst dependent Canadian islanders,and the relative success of fishery management amongst independent Icelandic islanders. The possibilities that independent people enjoy higher levels of rationality, efficiency, happiness, economic sustainability, Darwinian fitness, resource holding power, and, are thus, ceteris paribus, less likely to commit errors associated with The Problem of Induction are taken into consideration. FROM PHYSIOLOGY OF DISEASE TO SYSTEMIC PATHOBIOLOGY: HISTORY AND CURRENT TRENDS IN PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

A paper describes the main events and periods in the history of Pathophysiology as a curriculum element and research area. The national schools of Pathophysiology in Russia, continental Europe, Asia and British-North American world are compared, their history discussed. The evolution of Pathophysiology towards Systemic Pathobiology, its crisis and perspectives are evaluated. The priority of Russian clinical and experimental researchers of late XIX century in foundation of Translational Medicine is supported. The necessity in combined programmes of Pathobiology for current education of medical researchers from biological and medical backgrounds is discussed. The experience of innovative teaching/learning of Pathophysiology at Saint Petersburg State University and Zagreb University is analyzed
