Lessons Learned from Efforts at Institutional Change: Case Studies of Six OCEPT Institutions
As one part of a multifaceted evaluation of the Oregon Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (OCEPT), a case study approach was used to enable a deeper understanding of how a diverse group of six institutions attempted to achieve OCEPT goals and to learn more about factors that facilitated or hindered their efforts. Multiple sources of data were used, with heavy reliance on a series of on-site interviews. The analytical framework included a depth and pervasiveness typology of institutional change and a view of change as encompassing meaning, organization, and effects. While goals and accomplishment levels, as well as the depth and pervasiveness of change. varied across the six institutions, OCEPT-influenced changes most likely to be sustained included: new kinds and levels of faculty collaboration; peer-led teaching and learning approaches, and attention to evidence that these approaches positively affect student course performance; increased faculty awareness of their role in teacher recruitment, with related changes in classroom practices; and, continued strengthening of access to infomiation and academic advising for those preparing to become teachers. These institutions, however, did not make significant progress on one major goal of the project—to increase the numbers of underrepresented groups interested in teaching careers. Change was affected by the compatibility of OCEPT goals with institutional and faculty culture, as well as by local collaborative leadership, the size and complexity of the institution, the presence of boundary spanners, and how OCEPT resources were used
Research accomplished at the Knowledge Based Systems Lab: IDEF3, version 1.0
An overview is presented of the foundations and content of the evolving IDEF3 process flow and object state description capture method. This method is currently in beta test. Ongoing efforts in the formulation of formal semantics models for descriptions captured in the outlined form and in the actual application of this method can be expected to cause an evolution in the method language. A language is described for the representation of process and object state centered system description. IDEF3 is a scenario driven process flow modeling methodology created specifically for these types of descriptive activities
The nature of medical evidence and its inherent uncertainty for the clinical consultation : qualitative study
Objective To describe how clinicians deal with the
uncertainty inherent in medical evidence in clinical
consultations.
Design Qualitative study.
Setting Clinical consultations related to hormone
replacement therapy, bone densitometry, and breast
screening in seven general practices and three
secondary care clinics in the UK NHS.
Participants Women aged 45-64.
Results 45 of the 109 relevant consultations included
sufficient discussion for analysis. The consultations
could be categorised into three groups: focus on
certainty for now and this test, with slippage into
general reassurance; a coherent account of the
medical evidence for risks and benefits, but blurring
of the uncertainty inherent in the evidence and giving
an impression of certainty; and acknowledging the
inherent uncertainty of the medical evidence and
negotiating a provisional decision.
Conclusion Strategies health professionals use to
cope with the uncertainty inherent in medical
evidence in clinical consultations include the use of
provisional decisions that allow for changing
priorities and circumstances over time, to avoid
slippage into general reassurance from a particular
test result, and to avoid the creation of a myth of
certainty

Achieving teacher professional growth through a focus on making students' mathematical thinking visible
Providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their mathematical thinking can be challenging. This paper reports on a case study conducted with a teacher and her class of Grade 3/4 students which investigated this phenomenon. Following collection of baseline data that showed her students were not demonstrating evidence of mathematical thinking, the teacher implemented teaching approaches designed to address this. The findings indicated the teaching approaches were effective and led to changes in the teacher’s practice and professional growth. The study has implications for teachers who are looking to make changes to their practice based on evidence-informed teaching approaches
