Building a sense of belonging: exploring the design relationship between people and places
This document has two ambitious goals.
The first is to establish an understanding of a phrase that has enormous relevance to us all. It is a phrase that some have said is a mystery, about which we can gain insight, but not ultimately define. It is also a phrase that, when experienced, can enable each one of us to touch the seeming infinite, if not the very reason for living and then even for life itself. That phrase embraces the word on the young manâs surfboard. It is âa sense of belongingâ.
The second is to explore how to enable that sense of belonging to be experienced by as many people as possible in as many arenas as possible. That exploration is particularly relevant to my own
practitioner disciplines of Architecture, Planning, Interior Design and Development Facilitation. Its focus, therefore, is how to design buildings, both internally and externally, where people can
belong.
Such belonging can be experienced by people as individuals. It can be experienced when individual people share a relationship with another. It can be evident in large gatherings of people who share
an identity locally, as well as nationally. That belonging can also be there in the way we as individuals, as well as communities, relate to the places, large and small, in which we live our lives.
The contents have been through many iterations and revisions, both during the subject-defining stage of the Professional Doctorate programme and then when defining the response as a Context
Statement of the many public works referenced. There are three main sections, as follows:
a) An Introduction that sets out my objectives when reviewing my professional practice and the method adopted in preparing the document which then follows.
b) A Context Statement that includes examples of my professional work over a period of some 50 years as a practitioner. All of those examples are in the public arena. All are also my response to what became my lifeâs goal of enabling a sense of belonging through design.
c) A Teaching Tool Kit that followed my Viva, knowing I may now have sufficient experience of theory applied in practice to be able to teach others. This final section is, therefore, preparation towards doing so
Citizen Engagement : Politics and Digital Media in Namibia
Focusing on the Ohangwena Region in Namibia, this dissertation examined the attitudes, perceptions, feelings and experiences of youths and political leaders towards the use of mobile phones as a tool for participation and engagement in regional and local politics. Data were collected through participant observations obtained from youth forum meetings; through 65 semi-structured interviews carried out with selected participants (45 male and 20 female) from regional youth and constituency forums; through another six semi-structured interviews conducted with the regional councillors (regional politicians); through a content analysis of seven Facebook pages and two WhatsApp groups; and through two focus group discussions with the regional youth forum executive members in the Ohangwena region.
The findings show that poor network connectivity and poor radio frequencies in some of the constituencies, a high rate of unemployment among the youths in the region, unfriendly staff members at constituenciesâ offices, and difficulties in accessing or talking to political representatives in the region were the main factors that motivated the youths in my study to use their mobile phones to discuss issues, including political and civic ones, that deeply affected their lives. The results further highlight that youths generally prefer online platforms to real-life, physical situations of political participation and engagement â me
The Quest to End Human Trafficking: An Educational and Practical Guide for Everyone Who Wants to Help Break the Bonds and Assist Survivors
People often assume that only legislators and law enforcement personnel can take meaningful steps to fight human trafficking, one of the most lucrative transnational crimes in the world. This inquiry sought to assess the validity of that belief. The study was informed by the authorâs experience as a college instructor of human trafficking and the inspiration he drew from the range and quality of his studentsâ projects.
The methodology included examining the strategies that governmental and non-governmental organizations are using to fight trafficking and assist survivors. It also considered the work of individual activists and service providers such as social workers and health/mental health professionals. Business allies selected for review included convenience store managers and those in the lodging, tourism, airline, and transportation industries. Community influencers such as public officials, members of the press, spiritual leaders, and college instructors were studied as well.
The research demonstrated that each group is making a valuable contribution. The analysis first summarizes major concepts and laws that every antitrafficking activist needs to know. The author then organized the insights and lessons learned into five types of activities: Awareness, political advocacy, prevention, reducing demand (shopping wisely), and survivor intervention/aftercare. A separate discussion focused on ideas for student service projects, internships, and relevant career opportunities.
The concluding chapters offer an easy-to-follow game plan for anyone interested in joining the cause. Altogether, the Guide has more than 1,100 hyperlinks to articles and free resources that advocates can use to pursue their personal antitrafficking interests and priorities

Integration + Innovation: Proceedings of the 2019 Building Technology Educators\u27 Society Conference
This volume contains papers, abstracts, and posters from the 2019 Building Technology Educators\u27 Society (BTES) Conference, which focused on Integration and Innovation as the theme. Innovation can begin with conjecture, with a searching for more effective solutions, or with an application to currently unknown or unarticulated needs. Innovation scholarship examines the personal intellectual habits that support new ideas, such as openness and exploratory behavior, as well as the circumstances behind the places in which creativity flourishes, such as support for cross-disciplinary fertilization and access to resources. The 2019 BTES conference explored the role of technology education and curriculum in cultivating these intellectual habits in our students (and ourselves) and in creating the organizational spaces in which the future of practice will be shaped. Sessions shared exemplary proposals of research and pedagogical applications that explore innovative practices and integrative thinking in the academy and profession
