On-line activities (case studies, peer assessment and distance training) proposed in a course to graduate students are described and evaluated as examples of quality enhancement. The impact on students performances, the level of competencies they develop, the role of tutors and the changing relationship student-tutor-course are highlighted.Peer reviewe

Improving an interactive simulator for computer systems with learning objects

In the 21st century, learning is a crucial activity through which people can assimilate or acquire new knowledge. However, many existing e-Iearning systems contain complicated knowledge structure that hinders the reuse or sharing of knowledge. In a previous project awarded by the Microsoft Research Asia, we successfully developed an interactive simulator to facilitate the learning of essential concepts related to computer systems through live animations. Here, we propose to integrate learning objects and relevant technologies into our interactive simulator to illustrate the underlying knowledge structure and, more importantly, facilitate the sharing and reuse of relevant concepts. Through adopting the IEEE learning object metadata (LOM) standard, our simulator can easily exchange relevant learning objects with other e-Iearning systems. The system design and prototype implementation of our LOM-based simulator is considered in this paper to evaluate how general and experienced users can benefit from our LOM-based simulator in various ways. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2nd International Conference on Education Technology and Computer (ICETC 2010), Shanghai, China, 22-24 June 2010. Survey Research on Little or no Budget: Practical Tips and Advice for Using the Internet to Conduct Surveys

    Get PDF
The Internet is a medium that can be used to streamline the process of conducting survey research and offers advantages over traditional survey mediums like the face-to-face interview, telephone interview, and paper-based survey. Among the advantages are the potential for quick response rates via Web forms or e-mail, as well as monetary savings related to postage, stationary, or long-distance charges. In this article, we will provide practical tips for using the Internet for survey research as well as advice and lessons learned from our experience using the Internet to conduct a large survey project on little or no budget

Enhanced Learning Using Mutimedia-Interactive Systems: An Experimental Study

    Get PDF
The education field is in a process of change driven by new developments in multimedia technology, which is being used as a complementary alternative for teaching purposes. This paper describes a thesis project developed through an exploratory study comparing the effects of using three different teaching approaches: traditional teacher-led instruction, web page instruction and a multimedia-interactive system. The principal objective is to find out whether the use of a prototype multimedia-interactive delivers better outcomes in teaching complex subjects such as data structures, than web page and traditional teacher-led instruction approaches. Information Systems Design Theory was used to develop a multimediainteractive tool. Students were taught to use binary trees to compare the three teaching methods. Pilot test results show that there are significant differences in performance of students who used the multimedia-interactive tool. It is concluded that the multimedia-interactive system prototype can effectively be used to help students learn binary trees

Purpose of Study: The current study aimed at revealing the integration of information and communications technology (ICT) in EFL/ESL teachers' training and self-efficacy beliefs as perceived by trainers. A group of (64) trainers from different countries (Palestine, UK, USA, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq) completed the two instruments of the study. Methodology: The first instrument was a survey of the actuality of ICT integration in the training; it comprises (47) items distributed into nine domains, i.e.  PowerPoint, Facebook, Wiki, YouTube, Blogs, Email, Google, Mobile, and Platform\E-course. The second instrument was a self-efficacy scale which consists of (14) items. The results of trainers' responses revealed that Emails, Mobile, and Google are often used with relative weights (%78.59, %68.13, and %68.02) respectively, whereas Wikis were never used i.e. relative weight (%28.96). The differences in integrating ICTs between male and female trainers were statistically insignificant. Furthermore, there were no statistically significant differences due to the respondents' period of experience. Results: The results also showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the respondents' integration of ICT due to country of origin. The trainers' self-efficacy wobbles between 66.88 and 58.13 with a total of 61.70, which is moderate. Based on the study findings, the researchers recommend arousing trainers and trainees' awareness regarding integrating more ICTs in their training courses and encouraging them to try the different ICTs which make it easier for trainees to grasp the training material

A study which is entitled ‘User’s attitude towards ICT in Dhaka’ has been conducted. In Dhaka, Bangladesh both male and female are working hand in hand. Users of ICT have been increasing rapidly here. This study adopts with descriptive in nature. Both primary and secondary data has been used for the study. Open ended questionnaire has been followed for the study. The study reveals that users have more positive attitude towards ICT because it reduces cost, saves time, reduces human resources, improves job performances, increases customer satisfaction, improves competitiveness and profit. Keywords:  Information and communication technology, Transaction cost, speed, attitude, profit
