Lost in translation: data integration tools meet the Semantic Web (experiences from the Ondex project)

More information is now being published in machine processable form on the web and, as de-facto distributed knowledge bases are materializing, partly encouraged by the vision of the Semantic Web, the focus is shifting from the publication of this information to its consumption. Platforms for data integration, visualization and analysis that are based on a graph representation of information appear first candidates to be consumers of web-based information that is readily expressible as graphs. The question is whether the adoption of these platforms to information available on the Semantic Web requires some adaptation of their data structures and semantics. Ondex is a network-based data integration, analysis and visualization platform which has been developed in a Life Sciences context. A number of features, including semantic annotation via ontologies and an attention to provenance and evidence, make this an ideal candidate to consume Semantic Web information, as well as a prototype for the application of network analysis tools in this context. By analyzing the Ondex data structure and its usage, we have found a set of discrepancies and errors arising from the semantic mismatch between a procedural approach to network analysis and the implications of a web-based representation of information. We report in the paper on the simple methodology that we have adopted to conduct such analysis, and on issues that we have found which may be relevant for a range of similar platformsComment: Presented at DEIT, Data Engineering and Internet Technology, 2011 IEEE: CFP1113L-CD

AbstractAs time goes by, the world of technology is getting more sophisticated. We can easily get all the information we want to get. Internet access is getting faster and the world of software is progressing very rapidly. This progress must be based on a balanced advance in science and technology. One of them is PT Brightfoods International, a food manufacturing company located in the Sentul Industrial Area, Bogor, which produces food to be enjoyed throughout Indonesia. Currently, the storage of goods delivery data only uses general ledgers, raw material data forms and Microsoft Excel. So there are still frequent loss of stock of goods and not according to the order of the expiration date. This research designs and builds a web-based (offline) inventory system by applying the FIFO method. This record supports the company's business process activities and helps the data storage and processing process with FIFO calculations to avoid expired materials. The web-based inventory information system application using the FIFO method produces information to make a decision desired by the user. Therefore, an application is made that can assist the owner and his employees in processing data, as well as the number of items available. The information system used is based on web and using Sublime Text Tools and Database management Using the MySQL System. Keywords:Information Systems;FIFO;Inventory;WEB;Database Abstract As time goes by, the world of technology is getting more sophisticated. Web Spoofing 2001

The Web is currently the pre-eminent medium for electronic service delivery to remote users. As a consequence, authentication of servers is more important than ever. Even sophisticated users base their decision whether or not to trust a site on browser cues---such as location bar information, SSL icons, SSL warnings, certificate information, response time, etc. In their seminal work on web spoofing, Felten et al showed how a malicious server could forge some of these cues---but using approaches that are no longer reproducible. However, subsequent evolution of Web tools has not only patched security holes---it has also added new technology to make pages more interactive and vivid. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of web spoofing using this new technology---and we show how, in many cases, every one of the above cues can be forged. In particular, we show how a malicious server can forge all the SSL information a client sees---thus providing a cautionary tale about the security of one of the most common applications of PKI. We stress that these techniques have been implemented, and are available for public demonstration

    Accessibility and visually impaired users

Internet accessibility for the visually impaired community is still an open issue. Guidelines have been issued by the W3C consortium to help web designers to improve web site accessibility. However several studies show that a significant percentage of web page creators are still ignoring the proposed guidelines. Several tools are now available, general purpose, or web specific, to help visually impaired readers. But is reading a web page enough? Regular sighted users are able to scan a web page for a particular piece of information at high speeds. Shouldn't visually impaired readers have the same chance? This paper discusses some features already implemented to improve accessibility and presents a user feedback report regarding the AudioBrowser, a talking browser. Based on the user feedback the paper also suggests some avenues for future work in order to make talking browsers and screen readers compatible. The research reported in here was supported by SNRIP (The Portuguese National Secretariat of Rehabilitation and Integration for the Disabled) under program CITE 2001, and also FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) and POSI/2001 (Operational Program for the Information Society) with funds partly awarded by FEDER

Information-seeking Strategies Of Doctoral Students And Implications For Design Of The Graduate School Web Space

This dissertation looks at the information-seeking practices of doctoral students in the context of their search for a doctoral program and considers the implications for design of the graduate school Web space. Of particular interest is the description of patterns of Web use and the practices related to students\u27 preparation for interactions with technology, the nature of the interactions, and the thinking that occurs. An exploratory study that brings together hypertext theory, contextual, holistic approaches, and information behavior, this research includes a focus group of current undergraduate and graduate students to gather fresh details about information-seeking for a graduate program as a preliminary investigation in this area, eight interviews with current doctoral students admitted in Fall 2007 to capture the specific details of students\u27 information-seeking experiences for a doctoral program by mapping the journeys, and an online survey of current doctoral students admitted in Fall 2007 as further investigation of information-seeking for a doctoral program. Doctoral students who participated in this study rely on the Web as the primary source of prior knowledge of graduate education and graduate school, as well as the source most used to build that knowledge during the information-seeking journey for a graduate program and to prepare them for the start of their graduate study. The eight maps of students\u27 information-seeking journeys for a graduate program show how complex and wide-ranging these journeys are. Based on bits collected through their many Web encounters over six months to two years, students develop a \u27feeling\u27 for the people who make up the graduate program, social interactions within this group and research subgroups, and what it would be like to be a student in the program, all contributing to students\u27 decision making. Academic Web sites play a key role as support structures for students and have to do more than make the information available and findable; they must design in order to encourage and sustain engagement, or deep involvement. This study proposes several suggestions for academic Web design

Robust extraction of data from diverse Web sources

Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2010.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 31).In order to make the best use of the multitude of diverse, semi-structured sources of data available on the internet, information retrieval systems need to reliably access the data on these different sites in a manner that is robust to changes in format or structure that these sites might undergo. An interface that gives a system uniform, programmatic access to the data on some web site is called a web wrapper, and the process of inferring a wrapper for a given website based on a few examples of its pages is known as wrapper induction. A challenge of using wrappers for online information extraction arises from the dynamic nature of the web-even the slightest of changes to the format of a web page may be enough to invalidate a wrapper. Thus, it is important to be able to detect when a wrapper no longer extracts the correct information, and also for the system to be able to recover from this type of failure. This thesis demonstrates improved error detection as well as methods of recovery and repair for broken wrappers for START, a natural-language question-answering system developed by Infolab at MIT.by Erica L.
