    An Efficient Paradigm for Feasibility Guarantees in Legged Locomotion

    Developing feasible body trajectories for legged systems on arbitrary terrains is a challenging task. Given some contact points, the trajectories for the Center of Mass (CoM) and body orientation, designed to move the robot, must satisfy crucial constraints to maintain balance, and to avoid violating physical actuation and kinematic limits. In this paper, we present a paradigm that allows to design feasible trajectories in an efficient manner. In continuation to our previous work, we extend the notion of the 2D feasible region, where static balance and the satisfaction of actuation limits were guaranteed, whenever the projection of the CoM lies inside the proposed admissible region. We here develop a general formulation of the improved feasible region to guarantee dynamic balance alongside the satisfaction of both actuation and kinematic limits for arbitrary terrains in an efficient manner. To incorporate the feasibility of the kinematic limits, we introduce an algorithm that computes the reachable region of the CoM. Furthermore, we propose an efficient planning strategy that utilizes the improved feasible region to design feasible CoM and body orientation trajectories. Finally, we validate the capabilities of the improved feasible region and the effectiveness of the proposed planning strategy, using simulations and experiments on the HyQ robot and comparing them to a previously developed heuristic approach.     LeggedWalking on Inclined Surfaces

    The main contribution of this MS Thesis is centered around taking steps towards successful multi-modal demonstrations using Northeastern's legged-aerial robot, Husky Carbon. This work discusses the challenges involved in achieving multi-modal locomotion such as trotting-hovering and thruster-assisted incline walking and reports progress made towards overcoming these challenges. Animals like birds use a combination of legged and aerial mobility, as seen in Chukars' wing-assisted incline running (WAIR), to achieve multi-modal locomotion. Chukars use forces generated by their flapping wings to manipulate ground contact forces and traverse steep slopes and overhangs. Husky's design takes inspiration from birds such as Chukars. This MS thesis presentation outlines the mechanical and electrical details of Husky's legged and aerial units.     Locomotion system for ground mobile robots in uneven and unstructured environments

    One of the technology domains with the greatest growth rates nowadays is service robots. The extensive use of ground mobile robots in environments that are unstructured or structured for humans is a promising challenge for the coming years, even though Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) moving on flat and compact grounds are already commercially available and widely utilized to move components and products inside indoor industrial buildings. Agriculture, planetary exploration, military operations, demining, intervention in case of terrorist attacks, surveillance, and reconnaissance in hazardous conditions are important application domains. Due to the fact that it integrates the disciplines of locomotion, vision, cognition, and navigation, the design of a ground mobile robot is extremely interdisciplinary. In terms of mechanics, ground mobile robots, with the exception of those designed for particular surroundings and surfaces (such as slithering or sticky robots), can move on wheels (W), legs (L), tracks (T), or hybrids of these concepts (LW, LT, WT, LWT). In terms of maximum speed, obstacle crossing ability, step/stair climbing ability, slope climbing ability, walking capability on soft terrain, walking capability on uneven terrain, energy efficiency, mechanical complexity, control complexity, and technology readiness, a systematic comparison of these locomotion systems is provided in [1]. Based on the above-mentioned classification, in this thesis, we first introduce a small-scale hybrid locomotion robot for surveillance and inspection, WheTLHLoc, with two tracks, two revolving legs, two active wheels, and two passive omni wheels. The robot can move in several different ways, including using wheels on the flat, compact ground,[1] tracks on soft, yielding terrain, and a combination of tracks, legs, and wheels to navigate obstacles. In particular, static stability and non-slipping characteristics are considered while analyzing the process of climbing steps and stairs. The experimental test on the first prototype has proven the planned climbing maneuver’s efficacy and the WheTLHLoc robot's operational flexibility. Later we present another development of WheTLHLoc and introduce WheTLHLoc 2.0 with newly designed legs, enabling the robot to deal with bigger obstacles. Subsequently, a single-track bio-inspired ground mobile robot's conceptual and embodiment designs are presented. This robot is called SnakeTrack. It is designed for surveillance and inspection activities in unstructured environments with constrained areas. The vertebral column has two end modules and a variable number of vertebrae linked by compliant joints, and the surrounding track is its essential component. Four motors drive the robot: two control the track motion and two regulate the lateral flexion of the vertebral column for steering. The compliant joints enable limited passive torsion and retroflection of the vertebral column, which the robot can use to adapt to uneven terrain and increase traction. Eventually, the new version of SnakeTrack, called 'Porcospino', is introduced with the aim of allowing the robot to move in a wider variety of terrains. The novelty of this thesis lies in the development and presentation of three novel designs of small-scale mobile robots for surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and they employ hybrid locomotion systems that allow them to traverse a variety of terrains, including soft, yielding terrain and high obstacles. This thesis contributes to the field of mobile robotics by introducing new design concepts for hybrid locomotion systems that enable robots to navigate challenging environments. The robots presented in this thesis employ modular designs that allow their lengths to be adapted to suit specific tasks, and they are capable of restoring their correct position after falling over, making them highly adaptable and versatile. Furthermore, this thesis presents a detailed analysis of the robots' capabilities, including their step-climbing and motion planning abilities. In this thesis we also discuss possible refinements for the robots' designs to improve their performance and reliability. Overall, this thesis's contributions lie in the design and development of innovative mobile robots that address the challenges of surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and the analysis and evaluation of these robots' capabilities. The research presented in this thesis provides a foundation for further work in this field, and it may be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the areas of robotics, automation, and inspection. As a general note, the first robot, WheTLHLoc, is a hybrid locomotion robot capable of combining tracked locomotion on soft terrains, wheeled locomotion on flat and compact grounds, and high obstacle crossing capability. The second robot, SnakeTrack, is a small-size mono-track robot with a modular structure composed of a vertebral column and a single peripherical track revolving around it. The third robot, Porcospino, is an evolution of SnakeTrack and includes flexible spines on the track modules for improved traction on uneven but firm terrains, and refinements of the shape of the track guidance system. This thesis provides detailed descriptions of the design and prototyping of these robots and presents analytical and experimental results to verify their capabilities

    Design and development of a hominid robot with local control in its adaptable feet to enhance locomotion capabilities

    With increasing mechanization of our daily lives, the expectations and demands in robotic systems increase in the general public and in scientists alike. In recent events such as the Deepwater Horizon''-accident or the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, mobile robotic systems were used, e.g., to support local task forces by gaining visual material to allow an analysis of the situation. Especially the Fukushima example shows that the robotic systems not only have to face a variety of different tasks during operation but also have to deal with different demands regarding the robot's mobility characteristics. To be able to cope with future requirements, it seems necessary to develop kinematically complex systems that feature several different operating modes. That is where this thesis comes in: A robotic system is developed, whose morphology is oriented on chimpanzees and which has the possibility due to its electro-mechanical structure and the degrees of freedom in its arms and legs to walk with different gaits in different postures. For the proposed robot, the chimpanzee was chosen as a model, since these animals show a multitude of different gaits in nature. A quadrupedal gait like crawl allows the robot to traverse safely and stable over rough terrain. A change into the humanoid, bipedal posture enables the robot to move in man-made environments. The structures, which are necessary to ensure an effective and stable locomotion in these two poses, e.g., the feet, are presented in more detail within the thesis. This includes the biological model and an abstraction to allow a technical implementation. In addition, biological spines are analyzed and the development of an active, artificial spine for the robotic system is described. These additional degrees of freedom can increase the robot's locomotion and manipulation capabilities and even allow to show movements, which are not possible without a spine. Unfortunately, the benefits of using an artificial spine in robotic systems are nowadays still neglected, due to the increased complexity of system design and control. To be able to control such a kinematically complex system, a multitude of sensors is installed within the robot's structures. By placing evaluation electronics close by, a local and decentralized preprocessing is realized. Due to this preprocessing is it possible to realize behaviors on the lowest level of robot control: in this thesis it is exemplarily demonstrated by a local controller in the robot's lower leg. In addition to the development and evaluation of robot's structures, the functionality of the overall system is analyzed in different environments. This includes the presentation of detailed data to show the advantages and disadvantages of the local controller. The robot can change its posture independently from a quadrupedal into a bipedal stance and the other way around without external assistance. Once the robot stands upright, it is to investigate to what extent the quadrupedal walking pattern and control structures (like the local controller) have to be modified to contribute to the bipedal walking as well

    Modern robotic technologies have enabled robots to operate in a variety of unstructured and dynamically-changing environments, in addition to traditional structured environments. Robots have, thus, become an important element in our everyday lives. One key approach to develop such intelligent and autonomous robots is to draw inspiration from biological systems. Biological structure, mechanisms, and underlying principles have the potential to provide new ideas to support the improvement of conventional robotic designs and control. Such biological principles usually originate from animal or even plant models, for robots, which can sense, think, walk, swim, crawl, jump or even fly. Thus, it is believed that these bio-inspired methods are becoming increasingly important in the face of complex applications. Bio-inspired robotics is leading to the study of innovative structures and computing with sensory–motor coordination and learning to achieve intelligence, flexibility, stability, and adaptation for emergent robotic applications, such as manipulation, learning, and control. This Special Issue invites original papers of innovative ideas and concepts, new discoveries and improvements, and novel applications and business models relevant to the selected topics of ``Bio-Inspired Robotics''. Bio-Inspired Robotics is a broad topic and an ongoing expanding field. This Special Issue collates 30 papers that address some of the important challenges and opportunities in this broad and expanding field

    Understanding the fundamentals of bipedal locomotion in humans and robots

    Walking is a robust and efficient method of moving around the world, which would greatly enhance the capabilities of humanoid robots, although they cannot match the performance of their biological counterparts. The highly nonlinear dynamics of locomotion create a vast state-action space, which makes model-based control difficult, yet biological humans are highly proficient and robust in their motion while operating under similar constraints. This disparity in performance naturally leads to the question: what can we learn about locomotion control by observing humans, and how can this be used to develop bio-inspired locomotion control in mechatronic humanoids? This thesis investigates bio-inspired locomotion control, but also explores the limitations of this approach and how we can use robotic platforms to move towards a better understanding of locomotion. We first present a methodology for measuring and analysing human locomotion behaviour, specifically disturbance recovery, and fit models to this complex behaviour to represent it in as simple as possible such that it can be easily translated into a simple controller for reactive motion. A minimum-jerk Model Predictive Control algorithm at the Centre of Mass (CoM) best captured human motion during multiple recovery strategies instead of using one controller for each strategy, which is common in this area. Capturing this simple CoM model of complex human behaviour shows that bio-inspiration can be an important tool for controller development, but behaviour varies between and even within individuals given similar initial conditions, which manifests as stochastic behaviour. Coupled with the ability to only measure expressed behaviours instead of direct control policies, this stochasticity presents a fundamental limit to using bio-inspiration for control purposes, as only indirect inferences can be made about a complex, stochastic system. To overcome these barriers, we investigate the use of mechatronic humanoid robots as a means to explore invariant aspects of the vast dynamic state-space of locomotion which are described by physical laws, and are therefore not subject to the stochastic behaviour of individual humans, that apply to both biological and mechatronic humanoid forms. We present a pipeline to explore the invariant energetics of humanoid robots during stepping for push recovery, where the most efficient stepping parameters are identified for a given initial CoM velocity and desired step length. Using this to explore the stepping state-space, our analysis finds a region of attraction between disturbance magnitude and optimal step length surrounded by a region of similarly efficient alternatives which corresponds to the stochastic behavior observed in humans during push recovery, which we would be unable to identify without reproducibility, direct access to internal measurements and known full body dynamics, which is not available in humans. We expand this paradigm further to investigate the invariant energetics of continuous walking using a full-body humanoid by exploring the state-space of step-length and step-timing to identify the most efficient sub-spaces of these parameters which describes the most efficient way to walk. Through analysis of this state-space, we provide evidence that the humanoid morphology exhibits a passive tendency towards energy-optimal motion and its dynamics follow a region of attraction towards Cost of Transport-optimal motion. Overall, these findings demonstrate the utility of robotics as a tool with which to explore certain aspects of legged locomotion and the results gained from our methodology suggest that humans do not need to explore a vast state-action space to learn to walk, they need only internalise simple heuristics for the natural dynamics of stepping that are easy to learn and can produce rapid, reactive and efficient stepping without costly decision-making processes

    La structure bipède des robots humanoïdes leur confère une grande agilité et la capacité de se déplacer dans des environnements encombrés qui ne sont pas accessibles à des robots à roues plus traditionnelles. Cette particularité fait en sorte que ce type de robot est le mieux adapté pour évoluer dans des environnements conçus pour et par l’homme. Cette grande agilité a toutefois un prix puisque les humanoïdes sont plus complexes à contrôler étant donné l’instabilité inhérente à la marche bipède. Dans ce projet de recherche, on s’intéresse au contrôle de robots humanoïdes dans le cadre de tâches très communes et intéressantes à reléguer aux robots, soit le transport d’objet. Le cas d’intérêt est le transport collaboratif d’une charge par deux humanoïdes étant donné que ça ne nécessite aucun outil externe et est ainsi applicable en toute circonstance. En premier lieu, un estimateur d’état applicable pour les robots humanoïdes de petite taille est proposé, permettant ainsi d’estimer les interactions entre le robot et son environnement. Ensuite, une stratégie de contrôle permettant à un humanoïde d’utiliser un chariot de transport pour déplacer un objet lourd est présentée. Finalement, le transport collaboratif par deux robots humanoïdes est abordé. Le système développé utilise un contrôleur externe qui planifie la trajectoire des robots et valide la stabilité des déplacements à l’aide d’un modèle dynamique simple du système basé sur des pendules inversés. Tous les algorithmes développés ont été validés et testés sur des robots humanoïdes NAO. Les résultats démontrent qu’il est possible de transporter un objet lourd sans modifier les composantes matérielles des robots, soit en utilisant un chariot ou bien en coopérant avec un autre robot. Les résultats obtenus pourraient s’avérer utiles dans certaines situations réelles telles que les tâches de manutention dans un domaine manufacturier ou bien le transport de blessé sur une civière

    Scaled Autonomy for Networked Humanoids

    Humanoid robots have been developed with the intention of aiding in environments designed for humans. As such, the control of humanoid morphology and effectiveness of human robot interaction form the two principal research issues for deploying these robots in the real world. In this thesis work, the issue of humanoid control is coupled with human robot interaction under the framework of scaled autonomy, where the human and robot exchange levels of control depending on the environment and task at hand. This scaled autonomy is approached with control algorithms for reactive stabilization of human commands and planned trajectories that encode semantically meaningful motion preferences in a sequential convex optimization framework. The control and planning algorithms have been extensively tested in the field for robustness and system verification. The RoboCup competition provides a benchmark competition for autonomous agents that are trained with a human supervisor. The kid-sized and adult-sized humanoid robots coordinate over a noisy network in a known environment with adversarial opponents, and the software and routines in this work allowed for five consecutive championships. Furthermore, the motion planning and user interfaces developed in the work have been tested in the noisy network of the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) Trials and Finals in an unknown environment. Overall, the ability to extend simplified locomotion models to aid in semi-autonomous manipulation allows untrained humans to operate complex, high dimensional robots. This represents another step in the path to deploying humanoids in the real world, based on the low dimensional motion abstractions and proven performance in real world tasks like RoboCup and the DRC
