A reconfigurable H-shape antenna for wireless applications

    Get PDF
The official published version of this article can be obtained from the link below - Copyright @ EuCAP2010This paper presents a novel H-Shaped reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna fed by a Grounded Coplanar Waveguide (GCPW) for wireless applications. The uniqueness in the presented antenna design relies in the ability to select the number of operating frequencies electronically by using a varactor diode. The antenna structure consists of coplanar waveguide (CPW) input with an H-shape printed on a PCB and a varactor diode for reconfigurability. By electronically varying the value of the diode capacitance, the antenna can operate in a single band mode to cover Global Position System (GPS), a dual band mode to cover GPS and Global System for Mobile communications (GSM1900) or a three-band mode to cover GPS, GSM1900 and Bluetooth or Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN)

Use of Time-Frequency Analysis and Neural Networks for Mode Identification in a Wireless Software-Defined Radio Approach

The use of time-frequency distributions is proposed as a nonlinear signal processing technique that is combined with a pattern recognition approach to identify superimposed transmission modes in a reconfigurable wireless terminal based on software-defined radio techniques. In particular, a software-defined radio receiver is described aiming at the identification of two coexistent communication modes: frequency hopping code division multiple access and direct sequence code division multiple access. As a case study, two standards, based on the previous modes and operating in the same band (industrial, scientific, and medical), are considered: IEEE WLAN 802.11b (direct sequence) and Bluetooth (frequency hopping). Neural classifiers are used to obtain identification results. A comparison between two different neural classifiers is made in terms of relative error frequency

The reasons for the inferior performance of many existing buildings and associated energy systems are diverse, but an important part-cause is insufficient attention to the influence of occupant behaviour. In smart buildings it is necessary to allow for the integration of human behaviour in the HVAC system. In addition, many researchers are limited in their investigation by not having low cost tools that can provide information for their studies. This article is a review of the present state of art about the globe thermometer. It describes how to build your own globe temperature sensor and describes experiments that illustrate the feasibility of using a black globe thermometer with 40 mm diameter.

Ubiquitous Positioning: A Taxonomy for Location Determination on Mobile Navigation System

The location determination in obstructed area can be very challenging especially if Global Positioning System are blocked. Users will find it difficult to navigate directly on-site in such condition, especially indoor car park lot or obstructed environment. Sometimes, it needs to combine with other sensors and positioning methods in order to determine the location with more intelligent, reliable and ubiquity. By using ubiquitous positioning in mobile navigation system, it is a promising ubiquitous location technique in a mobile phone since as it is a familiar personal electronic device for many people. However, as research on ubiquitous positioning systems goes beyond basic methods there is an increasing need for better comparison of proposed ubiquitous positioning systems. System developers are also lacking of good frameworks for understanding different options during building ubiquitous positioning systems. This paper proposes taxonomy to address both of these problems. The proposed taxonomy has been constructed from a literature study of papers and articles on positioning estimation that can be used to determine location everywhere on mobile navigation system. For researchers the taxonomy can also be used as an aid for scoping out future research in the area of ubiquitous positioning.Comment: 15 Pages, 3 figure

Connecting wearable textile transmission lines: all-textile fabrication solutions and design techniques

    Get PDF
A new method for connecting transmission lines is presented without using rigid connectors in order to implement a fully textile interconnecting system appropriate for signal transmission in wearable applications. This method is applied to textile striplines and named ‘complementary overlap’. The proposed method is examined from 1 to 6 GHz covering the frequency bands of the target applications: ISM (WLAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee etc.) and L-band (GPS)

Wifi bluetooth based combined positioning algorithm

Nowadays positioning have become very important for many services (Localization based services) and positioning have become more accurate, despite, there are some territories that basic positioning systems like GPS or even hybrid ones like GPS-WiFi or GPS-WiFi-gsm can’t cover, specially indoor enviroments. In this paper we propose a positioning method merging WLAN and Bluetooth technologies based on trilateration technique. Simulated sceneario demostrate accuracy gains, even when we use a high signal attenuation parameter. A simulated sceneario taken from a real home with the real WLAN and Bluetooth stations validates our WLAN-Bluetooth method. Firstly we calculate each equation from each available station, then we decide how to overdetermine the generated equation system in a reason of 4 to 1 (4 equations for one unknown) and finally solve the system using mathematical methods. This work is a step more to better position in indoor enviroments and localization based service
