    Self-optimizing Uplink Outer Loop Power Control for WCDMA Network

    The increasing demands for high data rates, drives the efforts for more efficient usage of the finite natural radio spectrum resources. Existing wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) uplink outer loop power control has difficulty to answer to the new load on air interface. The main reason is that the maximum allowed noise rise per single user is fixed value. In worst case uplink load can be so high that all services, including conversational service, could be blocked. In this paper investigation has been performed to present correlation of main system parameters, used by uplink outer loop power control, to uplink load. Simulation has been created and executed to present difference in current implementation of uplink outer loop power control against proposed changes. Proposed solution is self-optimizing uplink outer loop power control in a way that maximum allowed noise rise per single user would be dynamically changed based on current uplink load on cell

    QoS Based Capacity Enhancement for WCDMA Network with Coding Scheme

    The wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) based 3G and beyond cellular mobile wireless networks are expected to provide a diverse range of multimedia services to mobile users with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). To serve diverse quality of service requirements of these networks it necessitates new radio resource management strategies for effective utilization of network resources with coding schemes. Call admission control (CAC) is a significant component in wireless networks to guarantee quality of service requirements and also to enhance the network resilience. In this paper capacity enhancement for WCDMA network with convolutional coding scheme is discussed and compared with block code and without coding scheme to achieve a better balance between resource utilization and quality of service provisioning. The model of this network is valid for the real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) services having different data rate. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the network using convolutional code in terms of capacity enhancement and QoS of the voice and video services.Comment: 10 Pages, VLSICS Journa

    Software-only TDOA/RTF positioning for 3G WCDMA wireless network

    A hybrid location finding technique based oil time difference of arrival (TDOA) with round-trip time (RTT) measurements is proposed for a wideband code division Multiple access (WCDMA) network. In this technique, a mobile station measures timing from at least three base stations using user equipment receive-transmit (UE Rx-Tx) time difference and at least three base stations measure timing from the mobile station using RTT. The timing measurements of mobile and base stations are then combined to solve for both the location of the mobile and the synchronization offset between base stations. A software-only geolocation system based on the above mobile/base stations timing measurements is implemented in Matlab platform and the performance of the system is investigated using large-scale propagation models

    A radio channel emulator for WCDMA, based on the hidden Markov model (HMM)

    One of the main development and research subjects within the telecommunications area activity is the 3G mobile systems standardisation. The radio access is, of course, the main trouble in mobile systems, so it is important to investigate its implication. This paper describes a radio channel emulator for the UTRA-FDD made, based on the hidden Markov model (HMM). Since a statistical system behaviour is needed to train the HMM, off-line simulations have been made. The results between simulated and emulated statistics are presented. The use of emulation models implies a loss of accuracy with respect to simulation models, but is adequate to operate in real time. Certainly, the main advantage of using HMM in the emulator is the huge reduction in time, resources and effort with regard to a real simulation of the system. The emulator will allow in future works, for fast testing and comparison of several higher layer protocols and error control schemes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Retransmission procedures to enhance link performance and higher downlink bandwidth requirements could question macrodiversity usage. This paper describes a simple methodology to compare soft and hard handoff performance in terms of transmission delay for packet data services.     Analysis of packet scheduling for UMTS EUL - design decisions and performance evaluation

    The UMTS Enhanced Uplink (EUL) provides higher capacity, increased data rates and smaller latency on the communication link from users towards the network. In this paper we present a performance comparison of three distinct EUL scheduling schemes (one-by-one, partial parallel and full parallel) taking into account both the packet level characteristics and the flow level dynamics due to the (random) user behaviour.\ud Using a very efficient hybrid analytical and simulation approach we analyse the three schemes with respect to performance measures such as mean file transfer time and fairness. In UMTS, a significant part of the system capacity will be used to support non-elastic voice traffic. Hence, part of our investigation is dedicated to the effects that the volume of voice traffic has on the performance of the elastic traffic supported by the EUL. Finally, we evaluate the impact that implementation specifics of a full parallel scheduler has on these measures.\ud \ud Our main conclusion is that our partial parallel scheduler, which is a hybrid between the one-by-one and full parallel, outperforms the other two schedulers in terms of mean flow transfer time, and is less sensitive to volume and nature of voice traffic. However, under certain circumstances, the partial parallel scheduler exhibits a somewhat lower fairness than the alternatives
