GPU-based maize plant analysis: accelerating CNN segmentation and voxel carving
PHENOVISION is a high-throughput plant phenotyping system for crop plants in greenhouse conditions. A conveyor belt transports plants between automated irrigation stations and imaging cabins. The aim is to phenotype maize varieties grown under different conditions. To this end we model the plants in 3D and automate the measuring of the plants
Persistent homology for 3D reconstruction evaluation
Space or voxel carving is a non-invasive technique that is used to produce a 3D volume and can be used in particular for the reconstruction of a 3D human model from images captured from a set of cameras placed around the subject. In [1], the authors present a technique to quantitatively evaluate spatially carved volumetric representations of humans using a synthetic dataset of typical sports motion in a tennis court scenario, with regard to the number of cameras used. In this paper, we compute persistent homology over the sequence of chain complexes obtained from the 3D outcomes with increasing number of cameras. This allows us to analyze the topological evolution of the reconstruction process, something which as far as we are aware has not been investigated to date
3D reconstruction of maize plants in the phenoVision system
In order to efficiently study the impact of environmental changes, or the differences between various genotypes, large numbers of plants need to be measured. At the VIB, a system named \emph{PhenoVision} was built to automatically image plants during their growth. This system is used to evaluate the impact of drought on different maize genotypes. To this end, we require 3D reconstructions of the maize plants, which we obtain from voxel carving
Weakly supervised 3D Reconstruction with Adversarial Constraint
Supervised 3D reconstruction has witnessed a significant progress through the
use of deep neural networks. However, this increase in performance requires
large scale annotations of 2D/3D data. In this paper, we explore inexpensive 2D
supervision as an alternative for expensive 3D CAD annotation. Specifically, we
use foreground masks as weak supervision through a raytrace pooling layer that
enables perspective projection and backpropagation. Additionally, since the 3D
reconstruction from masks is an ill posed problem, we propose to constrain the
3D reconstruction to the manifold of unlabeled realistic 3D shapes that match
mask observations. We demonstrate that learning a log-barrier solution to this
constrained optimization problem resembles the GAN objective, enabling the use
of existing tools for training GANs. We evaluate and analyze the manifold
constrained reconstruction on various datasets for single and multi-view
reconstruction of both synthetic and real images
Topological evaluation of volume reconstructions by voxel carving
Space or voxel carving [1, 4, 10, 15] is a technique for creating a three-dimensional reconstruction of an object from a series of two-dimensional images captured from cameras placed around the object at different viewing angles. However, little work has been done to date on evaluating the quality of space carving results. This paper extends the work reported in [8], where application of persistent homology was initially proposed as a tool for providing a topological analysis of the carving process along the sequence of 3D reconstructions with increasing number of cameras. We give now a more extensive treatment by: (1) developing the formal framework by which persistent homology can be applied in this context; (2) computing persistent homology of the 3D reconstructions of 66 new frames, including different poses, resolutions and camera orders; (3) studying what information about stability, topological correctness and influence of the camera orders in the carving performance can be drawn from the computed barcodes
Contour Generator Points for Threshold Selection and a Novel Photo-Consistency Measure for Space Carving
Space carving has emerged as a powerful method for multiview scene reconstruction. Although a wide variety of methods have been proposed, the quality of the reconstruction remains highly-dependent on the photometric consistency measure, and the threshold used to carve away voxels. In this paper, we present a novel photo-consistency measure that is motivated by a multiset variant of the chamfer distance. The new measure is robust to high amounts of within-view color variance and also takes into account the projection angles of back-projected pixels.
Another critical issue in space carving is the selection of the photo-consistency threshold used to determine what surface voxels are kept or carved away. In this paper, a reliable threshold selection technique is proposed that examines the photo-consistency values at contour generator points. Contour generators are points that lie on both the surface of the object and the visual hull. To determine the threshold, a percentile ranking of the photo-consistency values of these generator points is used. This improved technique is applicable to a wide variety of photo-consistency measures, including the new measure presented in this paper. Also presented in this paper is a method to choose between photo-consistency measures, and voxel array resolutions prior to carving using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves
Creating virtual models from uncalibrated camera views
The reconstruction of photorealistic 3D models from camera views is becoming an ubiquitous element in many applications that simulate physical interaction with the real world. In this paper, we present a low-cost, interactive pipeline aimed at non-expert users, that achieves 3D reconstruction from multiple views acquired with a standard digital camera. 3D models are amenable to access through diverse representation modalities that typically imply trade-offs between level of detail, interaction, and computational costs. Our approach allows users to selectively control the complexity of different surface regions, while requiring only simple 2D image editing operations. An initial reconstruction at coarse resolution is followed by an iterative refining of the surface areas corresponding to the selected regions
Designing a topological algorithm for 3D activity recognition
Voxel carving is a non-invasive and low-cost technique that is used for the reconstruction of a 3D volume from images captured from a set of cameras placed around the object of interest. In this paper we propose a method to topologically analyze a video sequence of 3D reconstructions representing a tennis player performing different forehand and backhand strokes with the aim of providing an approach that could be useful in other sport activities
Multi-camera complexity assessment system for assembly line work stations
