    The main part of this book, Elements of Linear Accelerators, outlines in Part 1 a framework for non-relativistic linear accelerator focusing and accelerating channel design, simulation, optimization and analysis where space charge is an important factor. Part 1 is the most important part of the book; grasping the framework is essential to fully understand and appreciate the elements within it, and the myriad application details of the following Parts. The treatment concentrates on all linacs, large or small, intended for high-intensity, very low beam loss, factory-type application. The Radio-Frequency-Quadrupole (RFQ) is especially developed as a representative and the most complicated linac form (from dc to bunched and accelerated beam), extending to practical design of long, high energy linacs, including space charge resonances and beam halo formation, and some challenges for future work. Also a practical method is presented for designing Alternating-Phase- Focused (APF) linacs with long sequences and high energy gain. Full open-source software is available. The following part, Calm in the Resonances and Other Tales, contains eyewitness accounts of nearly 60 years of participation in accelerator technology.     A fault tolerant, peer-to-peer based scheduler for home grids

    This thesis presents a fault-tolerant, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based grid scheduling system for highly dynamic and highly heterogeneous environments, such as home networks, where we can find a variety of devices (laptops, PCs, game consoles, etc.) and networks. The number of devices found in a house that are capable of processing data has been increasing in the last few years. However, being able to process data does not mean that these devices are powerful, and, in a home environment, there will be a demand for some applications that need significant computing resources, beyond the capabilities of a single domestic device, such as a set top box (examples of such applications are TV recommender systems, image processing and photo indexing systems). A computational grid is a possible solution for this problem, but the constrained environment in the home makes it difficult to use conventional grid scheduling technologies, which demand a powerful infrastructure. Our solution is based on the distribution of the matchmaking task among providers, leaving the final allocation decision to a central scheduler that can be running on a limited device without a big loss in performance. We evaluate our solution by simulating different scenarios and configurations against the Opportunistic Load Balance (OLB) scheduling heuristic, which we found to be the best option for home grids from the existing solutions that we analysed. The results have shown that our solution performs similar or better to OLB. Furthermore, our solution also provides fault tolerance, which is not achieved with OLB, and we have formally verified the behaviour our solution against two cases of network partition failure

    Dutkat: A Privacy-Preserving System for Automatic Catch Documentation and Illegal Activity Detection in the Fishing Industry

    United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans and their resources for the benefit of people and the planet. This includes protecting marine ecosystems, preventing pollution, and overfishing, and increasing scientific understanding of the oceans. Achieving this goal will help ensure the health and well-being of marine life and the millions of people who rely on the oceans for their livelihoods. In order to ensure sustainable fishing practices, it is important to have a system in place for automatic catch documentation. This thesis presents our research on the design and development of Dutkat, a privacy-preserving, edge-based system for catch documentation and detection of illegal activities in the fishing industry. Utilising machine learning techniques, Dutkat can analyse large amounts of data and identify patterns that may indicate illegal activities such as overfishing or illegal discard of catch. Additionally, the system can assist in catch documentation by automating the process of identifying and counting fish species, thus reducing potential human error and increasing efficiency. Specifically, our research has consisted of the development of various components of the Dutkat system, evaluation through experimentation, exploration of existing data, and organization of machine learning competitions. We have also implemented it from a compliance-by-design perspective to ensure that the system is in compliance with data protection laws and regulations such as GDPR. Our goal with Dutkat is to promote sustainable fishing practices, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal 14, while simultaneously protecting the privacy and rights of fishing crews

    Systematic Approaches for Telemedicine and Data Coordination for COVID-19 in Baja California, Mexico

Our model is based on human-centric design factors and cross disciplinary collaborations for scalable data-driven enablement of smartphone, cellular, and video Teleconsul-tation technologies to link hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services for point-of-care assessments of COVID testing, and for subsequent treatment and quar-antine decisions. A multidisciplinary team was rapidly created, in cooperation with different institutions, including: the Autonomous University of Baja California, the Ministry of Health, the Command, Communication and Computer Control Center of the Ministry of the State of Baja California (C4), Colleges of Medicine, and the College of Psychologists. Our objective is to provide information to the public and to evaluate COVID-19 in real time and to track, regional, municipal, and state-wide data in real time that informs supply chains and resource allocation with the anticipation of a surge in COVID-19 cases.     Evaluation of On-line Reconfiguration Techniques for a Distributed Avionic Middleware

    On-board Computers are at the centre of space-faring systems. Commercial Of The Shelf (COTS) components provide higher performance but do not provide fault-tolerance mechanisms. To tackle this, the DLR utilises a distributed system of COTS components, that run a middleware called ScOSA. ScOSA manages nodes in a distributed system and, upon a node failure, mitigates the effects by reconfiguring the system to a configuration that excludes the failed node. An online algorithm was implemented in the middleware of ScOSA, designed as a combination of the online algorithms acquired during literature research. After defining specific requirements for the tailor-made online algorithm, it was tested on the target hardware and by using virtual nodes for its feasibility and scalability. It was compared with the offline situation on time and network usage. The design of an online algorithm for ScOSA proved to be feasible. It was not only capable of creating configurations dynamically but also provided scalability
