A Generic Communications Module for Cooperative 3D Visualization and Modelling over the Internet: the Collaborative API
Cooperative three-dimensional visualization and modeling applications allow a distributed group of users to work together with a model they share. To implement this kind of applications the underlying communications system must provide reliable and ordered multicast of users interactions. Due to the high complexity that characterizes the models, network bandwidth requirements have limited their use to intranets or in a few cases to very high-speed Internet connections.
In this paper we present a communications module that solves this problem. The library exposed, which is called Collaborative API, supports the creation of very efficient cooperative 3D visualization and modeling applications by optimizing the use of the network resources.
The Collaborative API, implements a new communications architecture: the dynamic client/server. The communications module presented in this paper is illustrated by two examples of applications that use it to provide cooperative 3D visualization over the Internet
Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach

Copyright @ 2010 The Authors.The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework
TESNA: A Tool for Detecting Coordination Problems
Detecting problems in coordination can prove to be very difficult. This is especially true in large globally distributed environments where the Software Development can quickly go out of the Project Managerâs control. In this paper we outline a methodology to analyse the socio-technical coordination structures. We also show how this can be made easier with the help of a tool called TESNA that we have developed
On the Experimental Evaluation of Vehicular Networks: Issues, Requirements and Methodology Applied to a Real Use Case
One of the most challenging fields in vehicular communications has been the
experimental assessment of protocols and novel technologies. Researchers
usually tend to simulate vehicular scenarios and/or partially validate new
contributions in the area by using constrained testbeds and carrying out minor
tests. In this line, the present work reviews the issues that pioneers in the
area of vehicular communications and, in general, in telematics, have to deal
with if they want to perform a good evaluation campaign by real testing. The
key needs for a good experimental evaluation is the use of proper software
tools for gathering testing data, post-processing and generating relevant
figures of merit and, finally, properly showing the most important results. For
this reason, a key contribution of this paper is the presentation of an
evaluation environment called AnaVANET, which covers the previous needs. By
using this tool and presenting a reference case of study, a generic testing
methodology is described and applied. This way, the usage of the IPv6 protocol
over a vehicle-to-vehicle routing protocol, and supporting IETF-based network
mobility, is tested at the same time the main features of the AnaVANET system
are presented. This work contributes in laying the foundations for a proper
experimental evaluation of vehicular networks and will be useful for many

A new navigation paradigm for virtual reality: the guided visit through a virtual world
The three main navigation paradigms for virtual worlds, i.e., free navigation, automatic tours, and multiuser navigation show important limitations when dealing with guided visits that involve interactive cooperation among several users in 3D virtual worlds over the Internet. In this paper, we present our research into this issue and some important results. We propose a new navigation paradigm denominated guided visit through a virtual world, where the capacity of a user guiding several remote users through the virtual world is enriched with the capacity to dynamically interchange the role of guiding between the connected users. The user that acts as a guide moves freely through the virtual world, and his/her movements are reproduced by the browsers of the other guided users. We also present the architecture and the system we developed that implements this paradigm, as well as its integration in a working realworld application that demonstrates its use
Implementation of UAV Coordination Based on a Hierarchical Multi-UAV Simulation Platform
In this paper, a hierarchical multi-UAV simulation platform,called XTDrone,
is designed for UAV swarms, which is completely open-source 4 . There are six
layers in XTDrone: communication, simulator,low-level control, high-level
control, coordination, and human interac-tion layers. XTDrone has three
advantages. Firstly, the simulation speedcan be adjusted to match the computer
performance, based on the lock-step mode. Thus, the simulations can be
conducted on a work stationor on a personal laptop, for different purposes.
Secondly, a simplifiedsimulator is also developed which enables quick algorithm
designing sothat the approximated behavior of UAV swarms can be observed
inadvance. Thirdly, XTDrone is based on ROS, Gazebo, and PX4, andhence the
codes in simulations can be easily transplanted to embeddedsystems. Note that
XTDrone can support various types of multi-UAVmissions, and we provide two
important demos in this paper: one is aground-station-based multi-UAV
cooperative search, and the other is adistributed UAV formation flight,
including consensus-based formationcontrol, task assignment, and obstacle

A Framework for collaborative writing with recording and post-meeting retrieval capabilities
From a HCI perspective, elucidating and supporting the context in which collaboration takes place is key to implementing successful collaborative systems. Synchronous collaborative writing usually takes place in contexts involving a âmeetingâ of some sort. Collaborative writing meetings can be face-to-face or, increasingly, remote Internet-based meetings. The latter presents software developers with the possibility of incorporating multimedia recording and information retrieval capabilities into the collaborative environment. The collaborative writing that ensues can be seen as an activity encompassing asynchronous as well as synchronous aspects. In order for revisions, information retrieval and other forms of post-meeting, asynchronous work to be effectively supported, the synchronous collaborative editor must be able to appropriately detect and record meeting metadata. This paper presents a collaborative editor that supports recording of user actions and explicit metadata production. Design and technical implications of introducing such capabilities are discussed with respect to document segmentation, consistency control, and awareness mechanisms
