    Mobile Robots

    Get PDF
The objective of this book is to cover advances of mobile robotics and related technologies applied for multi robot systems' design and development. Design of control system is a complex issue, requiring the application of information technologies to link the robots into a single network. Human robot interface becomes a demanding task, especially when we try to use sophisticated methods for brain signal processing. Generated electrophysiological signals can be used to command different devices, such as cars, wheelchair or even video games. A number of developments in navigation and path planning, including parallel programming, can be observed. Cooperative path planning, formation control of multi robotic agents, communication and distance measurement between agents are shown. Training of the mobile robot operators is very difficult task also because of several factors related to different task execution. The presented improvement is related to environment model generation based on autonomous mobile robot observations

Standing in the intersection : using Photovoice to understand the lived experience of black gay college students attending predominantly white postsecondary institutions.

The intersection of multiple oppressed identities is characterized by the compounded effects of victimization, intimidation and continued marginalization by dominant culture groups in society. Despite a growing body of knowledge about the individual experiences of racial and sexual minorities, there remains a lack of understanding of the unique life experiences of individuals with intersecting oppressed identities, specifically Black gay youth. Failure or inability to recognize, understand and take action in response to the needs of Black gay youth in college, perpetuates a culture of oppression that compromises the physical and mental well-being, and the academic success of these students. Engaging Black gay college students in a Photovoice project affords said students the opportunity to document their everyday experiences in photographic images, tell the stories of their lives, and identify the strengths and needs of their community for campus policy makers, educators, practitioners and researchers. While it represents a trusted approach in understanding the lived experiences of marginalized and oppressed people, Wang and Burris’ (1994) participatory action research method Photovoice is underutilized as a means of understanding the lived experience of Black gay college students. This dissertation study utilized a modified Photovoice project as well as other qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the lived experience of Black gay college students, the meaning they attribute to said experiences and subsequent role performance. The students in this study demonstrated a keen awareness of the complexity and compounded effects of their identities and resilience in the face of harassment and repeated microaggressions while identifying and employing multiple pathways to personal, academic and professional success

Design of autonomous robotic system for removal of porcupine crab spines

Among various types of crabs, the porcupine crab is recognized as a highly potential crab meat resource near the off-shore northwest Atlantic ocean. However, their long, sharp spines make it difficult to be manually handled. Despite the fact that automation technology is widely employed in the commercial seafood processing industry, manual processing methods still dominate in today’s crab processing, which causes low production rates and high manufacturing costs. This thesis proposes a novel robot-based porcupine crab spine removal method. Based on the 2D image and 3D point cloud data captured by the Microsoft Azure Kinect 3D RGB-D camera, the crab’s 3D point cloud model can be reconstructed by using the proposed point cloud processing method. After that, the novel point cloud slicing method and the 2D image and 3D point cloud combination methods are proposed to generate the robot spine removal trajectory. The 3D model of the crab with the actual dimension, robot working cell, and endeffector are well established in Solidworks [1] and imported into the Robot Operating System (ROS) [2] simulation environment for methodology validation and design optimization. The simulation results show that both the point cloud slicing method and the 2D and 3D combination methods can generate a smooth and feasible trajectory. Moreover, compared with the point cloud slicing method, the 2D and 3D combination method is more precise and efficient, which has been validated in the real experiment environment. The automated experiment platform, featuring a 3D-printed end-effector and crab model, has been successfully set up. Results from the experiments indicate that the crab model can be accurately reconstructed, and the central line equations of each spine were calculated to generate a spine removal trajectory. Upon execution with a real robot arm, all spines were removed successfully. This thesis demonstrates the proposed method’s capability to achieve expected results and its potential for application in various manufacturing processes such as painting, polishing, and deburring for parts of different shapes and materials

The Art Of Resistance: An Arts Based Understanding Of Activism

    Get PDF
In this project, the researcher explored the ways that millennial activists articulated the role of emotions in their activisms through artistic means. Specifically, through the production of zines, a format that eschews standardization but often reflect non-dominant positionalities, millennial activists explored their articulations, experiences, and engagement with activism. Informed by arts-based research (ABR) the researcher analyzed data from an emic perspective. Analyzing the experiences of the 14 millennial activists who reflected a heterogeneous group, the researcher represents eight themes: the demands of artistry; building community; distance in families of birth; resistance to oppression; emotion; mental health, self-care, and guilt; the South; and social media. This study makes scholarly contributions to the empirical, theoretical, and methodological spheres of education research, and student activism and is a resource for educational researchers, scholar-activists, and university administrators who work in community with young adult activists. Specifically, implications from the research include among others: changes in support and policy for historically underrepresented students, and campus response to hate-inciting speakers and events on and near college campuses, the incorporation of new technologies in student affairs outreach, new formations of university leadership, and a call for universities to be proactive to support historically underrepresented students

Experiences of LGBTQ Students at a Primarily White Institution in the South

    Get PDF
In the United States, often Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and/or Questioning (LGBTQ) students are targets of verbal harassment and violence due to their sexual orientation or gender identity and gender expression. Further, 31 states do not offer protection against sexuality- or gender identity-based discrimination (ACLU, 2015). Schools are particularly vexing places, where L, G, B, T, and/or Q-identified students face difficulties due to the privileging of heterosexual students and heternormativity. In universities across the nation, suicide rates continue to climb for LGBTQ populations due to heterosexist policies, procedures, and practices, which lead to negative campus climates (Gortmaker & Brown, 2006; Howard & Stevens, 2000; Rankin, 2003). In this study, I used a mixed-methods approach to examine the campus climate for LGBTQ students who are out at a primarily white institution (PWI) in the South. I hypothesized that students who were out would experience campus climate more negatively than those who were not. While my findings did not indicate a significant relationship between outness and campus climate variables, students reported experiencing harassment on campus and negative experiences with Greek Life. Moreover, 81% reported passing as straight to maintain comfort on campus
