The Micro Unit, New York, NY, Architect, January 2013. Making Room, New Models for Housing New Yorkers at the Museum of the City of New York in 2013 featured a full sized Micro Unit with architecture by Amie Gross Architects. Furniture/interior design was by Clei, Resource Furniture and Pierluigi Colombo. The exhibition a co-presentation with the Citizen’s Housing & Planning Council, offered new insights into how our changing social, economic and cultural lives are re-shaping our housing needs. Visitors to the exhibition were able to inhabit this full sized studio apartment of 325 square feet to understand that a small space can indeed be spacious. This 325 square foot studio designed for a single person or couple allows for the range of activities we associate with “home”. The studio’s L shape moves the bathroom out of view and allows for a spacious kitchen where full meals can be prepared. The wide living/sleeping/study area culminates at the terrace. This outdoor room expands the space of the apartment while increasing the sustainable elements inherent in an efficient space by maximizing sunlight and fresh air. The design of the unit creates spaces that celebrate both the active and quiet occurrences of dwelling. The change in ceiling heights and flooring materials, the strategic placement of walls, and the various types of lighting all contribute to creating discrete spaces for living and fully complies with the scores of regulations set by the over 6 regulatory bodies that apply to the design of housing in New York City.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/wia_profiles/1001/thumbnail.jp

Humana Executive Offices | Senior Lighting Designer, 2014 Humana challenged HOK to design their executive offices to reflect their mission, to be transparent at every level of the organization. The end result, an open workspace design with offices centered in the interior of the building leaving the perimeter open for collaboration, communication and the crosspollination of ideas. Supporting the company’s history was the addition of the timeline. Humana’s milestones were accentuated with light highlighting the importance of their history and supporting the overall “nautilus” design of the project. Lighting is orthogonal throughout the space with one exception, the open collaboration space. Lighting is arranged in a random pattern to represent a collision of thoughts and ideas. Keeping with their theme of collaboration, on the lower level, HOK created a break room with individual and group seating. At the bar where the group seating is, decorative glass pendants highlight the collaboration space.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/wia_profiles/1043/thumbnail.jp

Sukkah Soul Sukkah Kit, Designer. Cedar, Polyethylene Netting, Metal Connectors, 2004. The Sukkah Soul sukkah is a booth used during the Jewish harvest holiday Sukkot. The design is influenced by traditional texts and sources. The form is inspired by three imaginative ideas interwoven during Sukkot: the Kabbalah’s Sefirot, the ushpizin or guests welcomed in the sukkah and psalms read during the holiday. Through the language of the Sefirot, G*d is expressed in ten manifestations, as it were, like kindness, strength and beauty. These manifestations have avenues of connection to one another forming triads of relationships. Seven of these manifestations coordinate with the seven hakafot-circuits when the Torah scrolls are carried around the bima. Each circuit is honored with the reading of a psalm related to a Sefirotic emanation. The seven manifestations are also paired with our patriarchs, who serve as guests. People may feel surrounded by the Sefirot / psalms / guests when they dine and study in the sukkah.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/wia_profiles/1004/thumbnail.jp

North Pole Physical Therapy Office, Architect, 2011. Project scope was to design a 3,500 SF office/efficiency apartment for a physical therapy practice in North Pole, Alaska. The rural, 1-acre site is on the edge of a small town, populated by indistinguishable strip malls, fast-food establishments and log cabins. Design goal was for the building to create a strong, contemporary business image in a banal built landscape. The interior spaces needed to have an open, light feeling, and maintain a connection to the exterior while maximizing comfort for staff and clients. The building is composed of three simple sloping volumes that define the entry, physical therapy gym and efficiency- apartment zones. Strategically placed windows define the corners of the large volumes and frame views to outdoors spaces that are protected from the surrounding development. Color and pattern choices for the exterior skin distinguish the volumes and create a pleasing contrast to the 8-month white, winter landscape.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/wia_profiles/1021/thumbnail.jp

Yountville Town Center, Project Principal, 2009. In 1998 the rural town of Yountville embarked on an extensive planning process for a new town center. The completed project, designed to achieve LEED Platinum, integrates new and existing buildings and shapes outdoor spaces—including a new town square—that accommodate large gatherings and simple neighborly exchanges. Located on 2.5-acres in the middle of town, the project references its rural surroundings and local vernacular architecture with simple massing, generous porches and familiar materials. The challenge was to provide flexible spaces that accommodate an array of activities—meetings, events, afterschool programs, exercise classes. The new and renovated community buildings house program and meeting rooms, large and small, a branch library and teen center in spaces that are light, airy and directly connect to the outdoors, reflecting Yountville’s casual elegance. Site paths connect the surrounding neighborhoods to main street. The new center has become the hub of community activity and a great source of civic pride.
