    Popular visual language as global communication: the remediation of United Airlines flight 93

    This article argues that while the linguistic turn in mainstream IR is important in broadening how IR approaches global communications, the linguistic turn has its limitations because mainstream IR tends to, in Mattelarts terms, `ex-communicate the visual from the linguistic. This is highly problematic, considering, firstly, that popular visual language is increasingly the language that amateurs and experts rely upon in order to claim contemporary literacy and, secondly, that much politics is conducted through popular visual language. If the challenge of this Special Issue is to think about how to bring the discipline of IR to meaningful, political life, then a very good place to start is by asking mainstream IR (again) to take popular visual language seriously as an important aspect of contemporary global communication. This article makes this demand of the discipline of IR. It does so by presenting a case-study the official US remediation of United Airlines Flight 93 as an illustration of how contemporary global communications move from the textual to the visual and of what is lost in not taking this move seriously. In particular, it claims that by failing to analyse popular visual language as integral to global communications, mainstream IR risks misunderstanding contemporary subjectivity, spatiality, and temporality

    This research investigates the current plague of unemployment and underemployment that nearly half of qualified individuals in the field of Visual Communications are met with after graduation. Students who major in this field dedicate a tremendous amount of time, money, and energy toward developing a broad skillset that resolves critical matters of communication through visual solutions. Research has demonstrated that despite conditions that are subject to ongoing change of economy, industry, and marketplace there are contributing factors that must be addressed to overcome un/underemployment regardless of circumstances. These include an underdeveloped network of professional contacts, deficiency in recognizing or responding to changing conditions, and a limited ability to customize one’s career around their unique specialization. The purpose of this study is to provide students who major in Visual Communications the information and tools needed to incorporate their ability to adapt and problem solve from their skillset into their search for work. To explore this issue, information was gathered through secondary research that involved data from federal databases, case studies, literature review, and secondary research in general. Return on investment for one’s education is measured in consideration of three primary themes: job satisfaction, income, and quality of life, which may provide hopeful opportunity for professionals in Visual Communications to overcome un/underemployment through career customization

    Verification of primitive Sub-Ghz RF replay attack techniques based on visual signal analysis

    As the low-cost options for radio traffic capture, analysis and transmission are becoming available, some security researchers have developed open-source tools that potentially make it easier to assess the security of the devices that rely on radio communications without the need for extensive knowledge and understanding of the associated concepts. Recent research in this area suggests that primitive visual analysis techniques may be applied to decode selected radio signals successfully. This study builds upon the previous research in the area of sub-GHz radio communications and aims to outline the associated methodology as well as verify some of the reported techniques for carrying out radio frequency replay attacks using low-cost materials and freely available software

    Depth coding using depth discontinuity prediction and in-loop boundary reconstruction filtering

    This paper presents a depth coding strategy that employs K-means clustering to segment the sequence of depth images into K clusters. The resulting clusters are losslessly compressed and transmitted as supplemental enhancement information to aid the decoder in predicting macroblocks containing depth discontinuities. This method further employs an in-loop boundary reconstruction filter to reduce distortions at the edges. The proposed algorithm was integrated within both H.264/AVC and H.264/MVC video coding standards. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the state of the art depth coding schemes, where rendered Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) gains between 0.1 dB and 0.5 dB were observed.peer-reviewe

    Visual Communications on the Road in Arkansas: Analysis of Secondary Students Videos

    In the summer of 2010, the Visual Communications on the Road in Arkansas: Creative Photo and Video Projects to Promote Agriculture program was initiated. The program consisted of a two-week agricultural communications curriculum that would be taught by agricultural science teachers in Arkansas. The curriculum was composed of lessons about photography, writing, and videography, and the program introduced students to digital photography and videography equipment and the proper uses of equipment. Once the curriculum was taught in secondary schools, a mobile classroom unit—consisting of a travel trailer, photography and videography equipment, and laptop computers equipped with editing software—would visit the school to assist students with the creation of short promotional videos about agriculture. The student-created videos were used as a hands-on extension of the curriculum learned in the classroom. Completed videos were posted to YouTube and then analyzed to assess student application of competencies taught in the curriculum. The researchers created a coding sheet to systematically assess all posted videos and inter- and intrarater reliability was maintained. An analysis of data gathered from the video assessment showed that secondary students were able to effectively apply many of the techniques taught in the curriculum through the agricultural videos created.
