    Online peer assessment: helping to facilitate learning through participation

    The focus of this paper is on the combination of enquiry-based learning, information literacy and e-learning and how they are embedded in an online peer assessment exercise. What it shall present is a structure and strategy that aids student learning in the short and long-term. Ninety eight students completed a questionnaire before and after a three-week online peer assessment exercise during a first year undergraduate research and study skills module. The results demonstrate that a significant number of students valued the design of the exercise and the benefits it can have on their future learning and development. The paper concludes by suggesting that new and innovative ways of assessment are needed to keep engaging students and develop their learning in different ways

    Responsible research and innovation in science education: insights from evaluating the impact of using digital media and arts-based methods on RRI values

    The European Commission policy approach of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is gaining momentum in European research planning and development as a strategy to align scientific and technological progress with socially desirable and acceptable ends. One of the RRI agendas is science education, aiming to foster future generations' acquisition of skills and values needed to engage in society responsibly. To this end, it is argued that RRI-based science education can benefit from more interdisciplinary methods such as those based on arts and digital technologies. However, the evidence existing on the impact of science education activities using digital media and arts-based methods on RRI values remains underexplored. This article comparatively reviews previous evidence on the evaluation of these activities, from primary to higher education, to examine whether and how RRI-related learning outcomes are evaluated and how these activities impact on students' learning. Forty academic publications were selected and its content analysed according to five RRI values: creative and critical thinking, engagement, inclusiveness, gender equality and integration of ethical issues. When evaluating the impact of digital and arts-based methods in science education activities, creative and critical thinking, engagement and partly inclusiveness are the RRI values mainly addressed. In contrast, gender equality and ethics integration are neglected. Digital-based methods seem to be more focused on students' questioning and inquiry skills, whereas those using arts often examine imagination, curiosity and autonomy. Differences in the evaluation focus between studies on digital media and those on arts partly explain differences in their impact on RRI values, but also result in non-documented outcomes and undermine their potential. Further developments in interdisciplinary approaches to science education following the RRI policy agenda should reinforce the design of the activities as well as procedural aspects of the evaluation research

    Information Literacy Instruction for Upper-Year Undergraduate Students: A Stratified Course-Integrated Approach

    Undergraduate students face many potential barriers to learning about the process of conducting research. Information literacy instruction provided through faculty-librarian collaboration in an effort to expand the abilities of the “novice researcher” can ease the experience of undergraduate students. In addition, information literacy instruction may invoke increased student participation in the scholarly discourse of their chosen discipline. The implementation of a stratified course-integrated approach may be particularly valuable to upper-level undergraduates in preparation for completing a thesis or other culminating project in their final year of study. This claim is examined within the context of an instruction session observed as a component of a third-year undergraduate Materials Science and Engineering course

    Academic literacies twenty years on: a community-sourced literature review

    In 1998, the paper ‘Student writing in higher education: an academic literacies approach’ by Mary Lea and Brian Street reinvigorated debate concerning ‘what it means to be academically literate’ (1998, p.158). It proposed a new way of examining how students learn at university and introduced the term ‘academic literacies’. Subsequently, a body of literature has emerged reflecting the significant theoretical and practical impact Lea and Street’s paper has had on a range of academic and professional fields. This literature review covers articles selected by colleagues in our professional communities of the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE), BALEAP the global forum for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) professionals, and the European Association of Teachers of Academic Writing (EATAW). As a community-sourced literature review, this text brings together reviews of wide range of texts and a diverse range of voices reflecting a multiplicity of perspectives and understandings of academic literacies. We have organised the material according to the themes: Modality, Identity, Focus on text, Implications for research, and Implications for practice. We conclude with observations relevant to these themes, which we hope will stimulate further debate, research and professional collaborations between our members and subscribers

    Science Vocabulary Acquisition: A Nonequivalent Control-Group Examination of Vodcasts and Fifth Grade Students

    This study investigated the effect of using video podcasts (vodcasts) as a supplement to traditional science instruction in fifth grade students and those students who participated in traditional science instruction only. In this quantitative study, a quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test nonequivalent control-group design was conducted using a sample population of fifth grade students at Bailey Elementary. After approval, the fifth grade students completed a pre-test of a released version of the North Carolina READY Science End of Grade Assessment, which also served as the study’s post-test. Participants in the treatment group received supplemental science instruction using content specific vodcast viewing sessions, provided by the classroom teacher, in addition to traditional classroom instruction. Participants in the control group received traditional classroom instruction only. Upon completion of the vodcast viewing sessions, all participants completed a post-test. Data from the pre-test and the post-test was statistically analyzed using a one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The conclusion was that, after controlling for pre-test scores, the treatment group post-test mean was significantly different from the control group post-test mean, with indications that the post-test mean scores for those participants receiving traditional science instruction plus the supplemental vodcast viewing sessions were higher than the post-test mean scores for those only receiving traditional instruction with no vodcast viewing sessions
