    Quality-Aware Broadcasting Strategies for Position Estimation in VANETs

    The dissemination of vehicle position data all over the network is a fundamental task in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) operations, as applications often need to know the position of other vehicles over a large area. In such cases, inter-vehicular communications should be exploited to satisfy application requirements, although congestion control mechanisms are required to minimize the packet collision probability. In this work, we face the issue of achieving accurate vehicle position estimation and prediction in a VANET scenario. State of the art solutions to the problem try to broadcast the positioning information periodically, so that vehicles can ensure that the information their neighbors have about them is never older than the inter-transmission period. However, the rate of decay of the information is not deterministic in complex urban scenarios: the movements and maneuvers of vehicles can often be erratic and unpredictable, making old positioning information inaccurate or downright misleading. To address this problem, we propose to use the Quality of Information (QoI) as the decision factor for broadcasting. We implement a threshold-based strategy to distribute position information whenever the positioning error passes a reference value, thereby shifting the objective of the network to limiting the actual positioning error and guaranteeing quality across the VANET. The threshold-based strategy can reduce the network load by avoiding the transmission of redundant messages, as well as improving the overall positioning accuracy by more than 20% in realistic urban scenarios.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for presentation at European Wireless 201

    Roadway traffic sound measured up on a high-rise building - the sound-level's statistical normality

    Percentile-value ceilings/thresholds have been mandated by governments around the world on roadway traffic sound-level. Such percentile values, by definition, change with the sound-level’s underlying probability distribution, i.e., the same percentile can imply different percentile values for different probability distributions. Whether the underlying probability distribution is Gaussian or not for the roadway traffic sound-level: contrary reports populate the open literature but such reports are typically weak in statistical rigor. This decades-long but ongoing debate will be surveyed comprehensively in this paper for the first time in the open literature. Then, this paper will present two new datasets measured in two separate evenings at exactly the same location up in a high-rise building, and will employ the Jarque-Bera hypothesis test to rigorously show that neither dataset is Gaussian

    Assessing Vehicular Density Estimation Using Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communications

In this paper, we present a solution to estimate the density of vehicles that has been specially designed for Vehicular Networks. Our proposal allows Intelligent Transportation Systems to continuously estimate the vehicular density by accounting for the number of beacons received per Road Side Unit, as well as the roadmap topology. Simulation results indicate that our approach accurately estimates the vehicular density, and therefore automatic traffic controlling systems may use it to predict traffic jams and introduce countermeasures. Additionally, in modern Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) communications, the high amount of information that can be generated and processed by vehicles will significantly increase message redundancy, channel contention, and message collisions, thus reducing the efficiency of message dissemination processes. In this work, we present a V2X architecture to estimate traffic density on the road that relies on the advantages of combining V2V and V2I communications. Our proposal uses both the number of beacons received per vehicle (V2V) and per RSU (V2I), as well as the roadmap topology features to estimate the vehicle density.     Fog Computing for Detecting Vehicular Congestion, An Internet of Vehicles based Approach: A review

    Vehicular congestion is directly impacting the efficiency of the transport sector. A wireless sensor network for vehicular clients is used in Internet of Vehicles based solutions for traffic management applications. It was found that vehicular congestion detection by using Internet of Vehicles based connected vehicles technology are practically feasible for congestion handling. It was found that by using Fog Computing based principles in the vehicular wireless sensor network, communication in the system can be improved to support larger number of nodes without impacting performance. In this paper, connected vehicles technology based vehicular congestion identification techniques are studied. Computing paradigms that can be used for the vehicular network are studied to develop a practically feasible vehicular congestion detection system that performs accurately for a large coverage area and multiple scenarios. The designed system is expected to detect congestion to meet traffic management goals that are of primary importance in intelligent transportation systems

    Multilane traffic density estimation with KDE and nonlinear LS and tracking with Scalar Kalman filtering

In this study, Kernel Density Estimation is utilized in order to estimate the traffic density more accurately when the speeds of the vehicles are available for a given region. For the proposed approach, as a first step, the probability density function of the speed data is modeled by Kernel Density Estimation. Then, the speed centers from the density function are modeled as clusters. The cumulative distribution function of the speed data is then determined by Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, whose complexity is less when compared to the other techniques and whose robustness is high when outliers exist. Then, the mean values of clusters are estimated from the smoothed density function of the distribution function, followed by a peak detection algorithm. The estimation of variance values and kernel weights, on the other hand, are found by a nonlinear Least Square approach. As the estimation problem has linear and non-linear components, the nonlinear Least Square with separation of parameters approach is adopted, instead of dealing with a high complexity nonlinear equation. Finally, the tracking of former and latter estimations of a road is calculated by using Scalar Kalman Filtering with scalar state - scalar observation generality level. Simulations are carried out in order to assess theperformanceoftheproposedapproach. Forallexampledatasets, theminimummean square error of kernel weights is found to be less than 0.002 while error of mean values is found to be less than 0.261. The proposed approach was also applied to real data from sample road traffic, and the speed center and the variance was accurately estimated.     On the Study of Vehicle Density in Intelligent Transportation Systems

    Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are wireless communication networks which support cooperative driving among vehicles on the road. The specific characteristics of VANETs favor the development of attractive and challenging services and applications which rely on message exchanging among vehicles. These communication capabilities depend directly on the existence of nearby vehicles able to exchange information. Therefore, higher vehicle densities favor the communication among vehicles. However, vehicular communications are also strongly affected by the topology of the map (i.e., wireless signal could be attenuated due to the distance between the sender and receiver, and obstacles usually block signal transmission). In this paper, we study the influence of the roadmap topology and the number of vehicles when accounting for the vehicular communications capabilities, especially in urban scenarios. Additionally, we consider the use of two parameters: the SJ Ratio (SJR) and the Total Distance (TD), as the topology-related factors that better correlate with communications performance. Finally, we propose the use of a new density metric based on the number of vehicles, the complexity of the roadmap, and its maximum capacity. Hence, researchers will be able to accurately characterize the different urban scenarios and better validate their proposals related to cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems based on vehicular communications
