Validation of a method for the estimation of energy expenditure during physical activity using a mobile device accelerometer
The main goal of this paper consists on the adaption and validation of a method for the measurement of the energy expenditure during physical activities. Sensors available in a mobile device, e.g., a smartphone, a smartwatch, or others, allow the capture of several signals, which may be used to the estimation of the energy expenditure. The adaption consists in the comparison between the units of the data acquired by a tri-axial accelerometer and a mobile device accelerometer. The tests were performed by healthy people with ages between 12 and 50 years old that performed several activities, such as standing, gym (walking), climbing stairs, walking, jumping, running, playing tennis, and squatting, with a mobile device on the waist. The validation of the method showed that the energy expenditure is underestimated and super estimated in some cases, but with reliable results. The creation of a validated method for the measurement of energy expenditure during physical activities capable for the implementation in a mobile application is an important issue for increase the acceptance of the mobile applications in the market. As verified the results obtained are around 124.6 kcal/h, for walking activity, and 149.7 kcal/h, for running activity. This work was supported by FCT project PEst-OE/EEI/L A0008/2013 (Este trabalho foi suportado pelo projecto FCT PEst-OE/EEI/LA0008/2013).
melhorar e controlar a saúde.
Estes utilizaram a aplicação móvel
futuro.Mobile devices are increasingly used by the population, increasing the number of
children and young people who have access to a smartphone. Allied to the possession of
a smartphone, comes the increased use of mobile applications that can help improve and
control health.
Due to dietary errors, both globally and nationally, the number of children and young
people who are overweight, or even obese, is high. Within this population, the oldest are
those with the worst habits.
Thus, the idea arose to develop a mobile application for the Android operating system,
with the aim of increasing health literacy for young people. With the increase in the
control of their habits and the promotion of physical activity, the intention was to
increase the quality of life in an interactive and personalized way.
In order to understand which features are most present in this type of mobile
applications, a search was performed in the Google Play application store. As a result of
an investigation, focused on young people's preferences, we found that the diet and
exercise diaries, notifications, diet plan, physical activity record, gamification and text
messages, served as a motivating factor.
To that end, a mobile application was then developed to improve the knowledge of young
people, providing them with a tool adapted to their age, with features that allowed them
to personalize the use and improve and increase physical activity.
This application was distributed to young people from two schools, one belonging to
Covilhã and the other to Fundão. At the beginning of the study, each young person
completed an initial questionnaire to understand the type of sample and their habits.
They used the mobile application for 5 weeks, having at their disposal several
functionalities and material that was being updated, and at the end of the study a
satisfaction questionnaire was made available, in which they evaluated the mobile
application and thus obtained the feedback, to improve the future.
Overall, the application developed included gamification features, information, diet
plans, training and medication, tips and curiosities, calculation of steps and calories,
among other features. To manage the various parameters, a Web platform was used. Most young people were satisfied with the mobile application and would use it in the
future
