Pathways to Offending: Domestic Sex Trafficking

Multidisciplinary professionals across criminal justice, public policy, education, and health and human services have all attempted to understand the complex phenomenon of sex trafficking to assist victims, correct offenders, and prevent future abuse. However, current research has struggled to agree on terms, definitions of terms, best measures of prevalence, and recommendations to address sex trafficking in the United States. This review of current literature aims to offer a synthesized framework to conceptualize domestic sex trafficking perpetrator behaviors (what they do), their uses of force, fraud, and coercion (how they do it), and their motivations and justifications/rationalizations for those behaviors (why they do it). The resulting conceptual framework can serve as a roadmap to guide the development of tailored assessment instruments and evidence-based treatments as well as improve community prevention and education efforts

PROACTIVE COMPUTING PARADIGM APPLIED TO THE PROGRAMMING OF ROBOTIC SYSTEMS

This doctoral thesis is concerned with the development of advanced software for robotic systems, an area still in its experimental infancy, lacking essential methodologies from generic software engineering. A significant challenge within this domain is the absence of a well-established separation of concerns from the design phase. This deficiency is exemplified by Navigation 2, a realworld reference application for (semi-) autonomous robot journeys developed for and on top of the Robot Operating System (ROS): the project’s leading researchers encountered difficulties in maintaining and evolving their complex software, even for supposed-to-be straightforward new functions, leading to a halt in further development. In response, this thesis first presents an alternative design and implementation approach that not only rectifies the issues but also elevates the programming level of consistent robot behaviors. By leveraging the proactive computing paradigm, our dedicated software engineering model provides programmers with enhanced code extension, reusability and maintenance capabilities. Furthermore, a key advantage of the model lies in its dynamic adaptability via on-the-fly strategy change in decision-making. Second, in order to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the two systems, an exhaustive comparative study between Navigation 2 and the same application implemented along the lines of our model, is conducted. This study covers thorough assessments at both compile-time and runtime. Software metrics such as coupling, lack of cohesion, complexity, and various size measures are employed to quantify and visualize code quality and efficiency attributes. The CodeMR software tool aids in visualizing these metrics, while runtime analysis involves monitoring CPU and memory usage through the Datadog monitoring software. Preliminary findings indicate that our implementation either matches or surpasses Navigation 2’s performance while simultaneously enhancing code structure and simplifying modifications and extensions of the code base

John Updike and Norman Mailer : sport inferences

Through the examination of the styles of writing, biographies, and novels of the two modern contemporary American authors John Updike and Norman Mailer, the problem of an author's use of sport in the literary genre of the novel provides a thrust into the relationship of the sport phenomenon to a literary art form. Sport inferences employed by the two authors as each developed the novelized elements of plot, characterization, and setting, directed the organization of the study. As an author and his style are synonymous, the congruency of the authors' sport backgrounds and the allusions to sport in their novels also received examination. Sport inferences were studied by first examining the biographies and styles of the two authors. Each of Updike's six novels and Mailer's five were then reviewed with particular emphasis on the pattern of usage in each novel. From these patterns, concepts which seemed to structure the sport philosophies projected by each author were drawn for general comparisons of the two

The political promise of choreography in performance and/as research: First Physical Theatre Company’s manifesto and repertory, 1993-2015

This study redefines the political in dance by drawing on the scholarly concept of the “choreopolitical” (André Lepecki) and extending it into analysing related concepts such as the “postdramatic” (Hans-Thies Lehmann), performance and/as research, among others from Performance Studies scholarship as well as from First Physical Theatre Company’s pioneering legacy of production, pedagogy and research in making Phyical Theatre performance. Following from the notion that performance is both a site and a method of study/knowing, the research invites a rethinking of the relationship between art (performance), epistemology and the political, in the sense that performance becomes a way, not of simply re-presenting the political but, as its own way of knowing, actively questioning the very categories on which the political is premised. The argument for Physical Theatre as having nascent potential to invoke what I call “the power of the small” is analysed as a choreopolitical method and community of practice that has a generative capacity to produce the “intimate revolts” (Julia Kristeva) or body of questions that can perform the imaginative curiosities/forms required to create provocative, subversive, ethical, reflexive and charged performance. My argument is supported by critical commentary, insight, choreological analysis and reflection on the dramaturgical strategies and choreopolitics of selected commissioned choreographers and dance forms that extended FPTC’s manifesto and production between 1993 and 2015. My project has the following three goals: (i) to contextualise, conceptualise and identify key issues in the identity, pedagogy and performance ethos of Physical Theatre as a performance philosophy and form; (ii) to engage critically with the praxis of Physical Theatre within the contextual, cultural, historical and political relationships between Physical Theatre and other performance practices in South Africa; and (iii) to document, analyse and interpret selected claims, works and performance processes from the archive of FPTC’s repertory and training manifesto from 1993 to 2015. The research evaluates the political significance and consequence of FPTC’s heritage and legacy problematising constraints, possibilities, tensions, failures and proposing the hope of imaginative entanglements with practising freedoms

Validation of Rules Used in Foxy Peer-to-Peer Network Investigations

Part 5: NETWORK FORENSICSInternational audienceRules have been specified for identifying first seeders in the Foxy peer-to-peer (P2P) network. However, these rules have not been validated due to difficulties in repeating download scenarios. This paper describes a rule validation scheme that uses a network simulation environment. The Type I and Type II error rates of Foxy network monitoring rules over 100 simulation experiments covering ten scenarios are measured and analyzed. The error rates reflect the limitations of the monitoring rules and demonstrate the importance of using network simulations for rule validation

Retrying Leopold and Loeb: A Neuropsychological Perspective

They called it the crime of the century; in 1924 in Chicago two brilliant, well-educated, and wealthy young men kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy and killed him for the thrill of it . Expert testimony was presented by several well-known psychiatrists and psychologists, but even with all their clinical insights, none could reach a conclusion about the causal relation between their disturbed childhoods and a violent senseless crime. In fact, the well-known criminal defense attorney Clarence Darrow made little mention of the extensive psychiatric and psychological workups, and the judge did not deal with it in his sentencing. A review of the findings does suggest a delusional disorder for one of the defendants and psychopathy for the other; the interaction of these two disordered personalities led to a perfect storm a confluence of factors that only in combination could result in the brutal crime. Recent developments in neuropsychology allow us to see how these two disordered personalities interacted; the neuropsychological basis of delusional disorder and of psychopathy will be explored in this presentation along with a re-imagined closing argument by their attorney

This chapter, "Hip Hop 2.0," examines how hip hop music label Web sites (Guerrillafunk.com and Slamjamz.com) provide an educational space where young people can interact, learn, and discuss "real world" problems via their commitments to popular culture. These internet music labels "sell" more than music. They broaden how cultural entrepreneurial production and innovative citizen initiatives can be re-interpreted by non-broadcast based media, while constituting a counter-public sphere for political activism and learning through networked digital media.
