    Cloud Index Tracking: Enabling Predictable Costs in Cloud Spot Markets

    Cloud spot markets rent VMs for a variable price that is typically much lower than the price of on-demand VMs, which makes them attractive for a wide range of large-scale applications. However, applications that run on spot VMs suffer from cost uncertainty, since spot prices fluctuate, in part, based on supply, demand, or both. The difficulty in predicting spot prices affects users and applications: the former cannot effectively plan their IT expenditures, while the latter cannot infer the availability and performance of spot VMs, which are a function of their variable price. To address the problem, we use properties of cloud infrastructure and workloads to show that prices become more stable and predictable as they are aggregated together. We leverage this observation to define an aggregate index price for spot VMs that serves as a reference for what users should expect to pay. We show that, even when the spot prices for individual VMs are volatile, the index price remains stable and predictable. We then introduce cloud index tracking: a migration policy that tracks the index price to ensure applications running on spot VMs incur a predictable cost by migrating to a new spot VM if the current VM's price significantly deviates from the index price.Comment: ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing 201

    Knowing the number of virtual machines (VMs) that a cloud physical hardware can (further) support is critical as it has implications on provisioning and hardware procurement. However, current methods for estimating the maximum number of VMs possible on a given hardware is usually the ratio of the specifications of a VM to the underlying cloud hardware’s specifications. Such naive and linear estimation methods mostly yield impractical limits as to how many VMs the hardware can actually support. It was found that if we base on the naive division method, user experience on VMs at those limits would be severely degraded. In this paper, we demonstrate through experimental results, the significant gap between the limits derived using the estimation method mentioned above and the actual situation.     Perception of VMS Effectiveness: A British and Canadian Perspective

    Variable Message Signs are becoming a common sight on the UK Motorway network and have been well established on North American Freeways for several decades, as highway authorities strive to better manage scarce road network resources and provide travellers with up-to-date traffic information and alternative route options. The flexibility of VMS allows them to display varied information on road conditions, safety messages, alternate routes, speed limits, and general travel information. The steady growth in deployment of VMS in the next few years will lead to enhanced use of information to better manage highways and control levels of traffic congestion. The effectiveness of VMS in achieving this goal, however, depends entirely upon driver response to and perception of the information displayed. Previous research has indicated that VMS information needs to be timely, accurate, easily understandable and also believable for motorists to take any notice of it and act accordingly. This paper will report on findings from several attitudinal questionnaire surveys, conducted in and around London and Manchester in the UK, and Toronto in Canada, to determine VMS effectiveness.     Experimental Evaluation of SDN-Controlled, Joint Consolidation of Policies and Virtual Machines

    Middleboxes (MBs) are ubiquitous in modern data centre (DC) due to their crucial role in implementing network security, management and optimisation. In order to meet network policy's requirement on correct traversal of an ordered sequence of MBs, network administrators rely on static policy based routing or VLAN stitching to steer traffic flows. However, dynamic virtual server migration in virtual environment has greatly challenged such static traffic steering. In this paper, we design and implement Sync, an efficient and synergistic scheme to jointly consolidate network policies and virtual machines (VMs), in a readily deployable Mininet environment. We present the architecture of Sync framework and open source its code. We also extensively evaluate Sync over diverse workload and policies. Our results show that in an emulated DC of 686 servers, 10k VMs, 8k policies, and 100k flows, Sync processes a group of 900 VMs and 10 VMs in 634 seconds and 4 seconds respectively

    Virtual Machine Support for Many-Core Architectures: Decoupling Abstract from Concrete Concurrency Models

    The upcoming many-core architectures require software developers to exploit concurrency to utilize available computational power. Today's high-level language virtual machines (VMs), which are a cornerstone of software development, do not provide sufficient abstraction for concurrency concepts. We analyze concrete and abstract concurrency models and identify the challenges they impose for VMs. To provide sufficient concurrency support in VMs, we propose to integrate concurrency operations into VM instruction sets. Since there will always be VMs optimized for special purposes, our goal is to develop a methodology to design instruction sets with concurrency support. Therefore, we also propose a list of trade-offs that have to be investigated to advise the design of such instruction sets. As a first experiment, we implemented one instruction set extension for shared memory and one for non-shared memory concurrency. From our experimental results, we derived a list of requirements for a full-grown experimental environment for further research
