    Predictor Antenna Systems: Exploiting Channel State Information for Vehicle Communications

    Vehicle communication is one of the most important use cases in the fifth generation of wireless networks (5G).\ua0 The growing demand for quality of service (QoS) characterized by performance metrics, such as spectrum efficiency, peak data rate, and outage probability, is mainly limited by inaccurate prediction/estimation of channel state information (CSI) of the rapidly changing environment around moving vehicles. One way to increase the prediction horizon of CSI in order to improve the QoS is deploying predictor antennas (PAs).\ua0 A PA system consists of two sets of antennas typically mounted on the roof of a vehicle, where the PAs positioned at the front of the vehicle are used to predict the CSI observed by the receive antennas (RAs) that are aligned behind the PAs. In realistic PA systems, however, the actual benefit is affected by a variety of factors, including spatial mismatch, antenna utilization, temporal correlation of scattering environment, and CSI estimation error. This thesis investigates different resource allocation schemes for the PA systems under practical constraints, with main contributions summarized as follows.First, in Paper A, we study the PA system in the presence of the so-called spatial mismatch problem, i.e., when the channel observed by the PA is not exactly the same as the one experienced by the RA. We derive closed-form expressions for the throughput-optimized rate adaptation, and evaluate the system performance in various temporally-correlated conditions for the scattering environment. Our results indicate that PA-assisted adaptive rate adaptation leads to a considerable performance improvement, compared to the cases with no rate adaptation. Then, to simplify e.g., various integral calculations as well as different operations such as parameter optimization, in Paper B, we propose a semi-linear approximation of the Marcum Q-function, and apply the proposed approximation to the evaluation of the PA system. We also perform deep analysis of the effect of various parameters such as antenna separation as well as CSI estimation error. As we show, our proposed approximation scheme enables us to analyze PA systems with high accuracy.The second part of the thesis focuses on improving the spectral efficiency of the PA system by involving the PA into data transmission. In Paper C, we analyze the outage-limited performance of PA systems using hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). With our proposed approach, the PA is used not only for improving the CSI in the retransmissions to the RA, but also for data transmission in the initial round.\ua0 As we show in the analytical and the simulation results, the combination of PA and HARQ protocols makes it possible to improve the spectral efficiency and adapt transmission parameters to mitigate the effect of spatial mismatch

    Towards Context Information-based High-Performing Connectivity in Internet of Vehicle Communications

    Internet-of-vehicles (IoV) is one of the most important use cases in the fifth generation (5G) of wireless networks and beyond. Here, IoV communications refer to two types of scenarios: serving the in-vehicle users with moving relays (MRs); and supporting vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications for, e.g., connected vehicle functionalities. Both of them can be achieved by transceivers on top of vehicles with growing demand for quality of service (QoS), such as spectrum efficiency, peak data rate, and coverage probability. However, the performance of MRs and V2X is limited by challenges such as the inaccurate prediction/estimation of the channel state information (CSI), beamforming mismatch, and blockages. Knowing the environment and utilizing such context information to assist communication could alleviate these issues. This thesis investigates various context information-based performance enhancement schemes for IoV networks, with main contributions listed as follows.In order to mitigate the channel aging issue, i.e., the CSI becomes inaccurate soon at high speeds, the first part of the thesis focuses on one way to increase the prediction horizon of CSI in MRs: predictor antennas (PAs). A PA system is designed as a system with two sets of antennas on the roof of a vehicle, where the PAs positioned at the front of the vehicle are used to predict the CSI observed by the receive antennas (RAs) that are aligned behind the PAs. In PA systems, however, the benefit is affected by a variety of factors. For example, 1) spatial mismatch between the point where the PA estimates the channel and the point where the RA reaches several time slots later, 2) antenna utilization efficiency of the PA, 3) temporal evolution, and 4) estimation error of the PA-base station (BS) channel. First, in Paper A, we study the PA system in the presence of the spatial mismatch problem, and propose an analytical channel model which is used for rate adaptation. In paper B, we propose different approximation schemes for the analytical investigation of PA systems, and study the effect of different parameters on the network performance. Then, involving PAs into data transmission, Paper C and Paper D analyze the outage- and the delay-limited performance of PA systems using hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), respectively. As we show in the analytical and the simulation results in Papers C-D, the combination of PA and HARQ protocols makes it possible to improve spectral efficiency and adapt the transmission parameters to mitigate the effect of spatial mismatch. Finally, a review of PA studies in the literature, the challenges and potentials of PA as well as some to-be-solved issues are presented in Paper E.The second part of the thesis focuses on using advanced technologies to further improve the MR/IoV performance. In Paper F, a cooperative PA scheme in IoV networks is proposed to mitigate both the channel aging effect and blockage sensitivity in millimeter-wave channels by collaborative vehicles and BS handover. Then, in Paper G, we study the potentials and challenges of dynamic blockage pre-avoidance in IoV networks

    Advancements in Measuring and Modeling the Mechanical and Hydrological Properties of Snow and Firn: Multi-sensor Analysis, Integration, and Algorithm Development

    Estimating snow mechanical properties – such as elastic modulus, stiffness, and strength – is important for understanding how effectively a vehicle can travel over snow-covered terrain. Vehicle instrumentation data and observations of the snowpack are valuable for improving the estimates of winter vehicle performance. Combining in-situ and remotely-sensed snow observations, driver input, and vehicle performance sensors requires several techniques of data integration. I explored correlations between measurements spanning from millimeter to meter scales, beginning with the SnowMicroPenetrometer (SMP) and instruments applied to snow that were designed for measuring the load bearing capacity and the compressive and shear strengths of roads and soils. The spatial distribution of snow’s mechanical properties is still largely unknown. From this initial work, I determined that snow density remains a useful proxy for snowpack strength. To measure snow density, I applied multi-sensor electromagnetic methods. Using spatially distributed snowpack, terrain, and vegetation information developed in the subsequent chapters, I developed an over-snow vehicle performance model. To measure the vehicle performance, I joined driver and vehicle data in the coined Normalized Difference Mobility Index (NDMI). Then, I applied regression methods to distribute NDMI from spatial snow, terrain, and vegetation properties. Mobility prediction is useful for the strategic advancement of warfighting in cold regions. The security of water resources is climatologically inequitable and water stress causes international conflict. Water resources derived from snow are essential for modern societies in climates where snow is the predominant source of precipitation, such as the western United States. Snow water equivalent (SWE) is a critical parameter for yearly water supply forecasting and can be calculated by multiplying the snow depth by the snow density. In this work, I combined high-spatial resolution light detection and ranging (LiDAR) measured snow depths with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements of two-way travel-time (TWT) to solve for snow density. Then using LiDAR derived terrain and vegetation features as predictors in a multiple linear regression, the density observations are distributed across the SnowEx 2020 study area at Grand Mesa, Colorado. The modeled density resolved detailed patterns that agree with the known interactions of snow with wind, terrain, and vegetation. The integration of radar and LiDAR sensors shows promise as a technique for estimating SWE across entire river basins and evaluating observational- or physics-based snow-density models. Accurate estimation of SWE is a means of water security. In our changing climate, snow and ice mass are being permanently lost from the cryosphere. Mass balance is an indicator of the (in)stability of glaciers and ice sheets. Surface mass balance (SMB) may be estimated by multiplying the thickness of any annual snowpack layer by its density. Though, unlike applications in seasonal snowpack, the ages of annual firn layers are unknown. To estimate SMB, I modeled the firn depth, density, and age using empirical and numerical approaches. The annual SMB history shows cyclical patterns representing the combination of atmospheric, oceanic, and anthropogenic climate forcing, which may serve as evaluation or assimilation data in climate model retrievals of SMB. The advancements made using the SMP, multi-channel GPR arrays, and airborne LiDAR and radar within this dissertation have made it possible to spatially estimate the snow depth, density, and water equivalent in seasonal snow, glaciers, and ice sheets. Open access, process automation, repeatability, and accuracy were key design parameters of the analyses and algorithms developed within this work. The many different campaigns, objectives, and outcomes composing this research documented the successes and limitations of multi-sensor estimation techniques for a broad range of cryosphere applications

    This document provides the most recent updates on the technical contributions and research challenges focused in WP3. Each Technology Component (TeC) has been evaluated under possible uniform assessment framework of WP3 which is based on the simulation guidelines of WP6. The performance assessment is supported by the simulation results which are in their mature and stable state. An update on the Most Promising Technology Approaches (MPTAs) and their associated TeCs is the main focus of this document. Based on the input of all the TeCs in WP3, a consolidated view of WP3 on the role of multinode/multi-antenna transmission technologies in 5G systems has also been provided.     Short-Term Vehicle Traffic Prediction for Terahertz Line-of-Sight Estimation and Optimization in Small Cells

    Significant efforts have been made and are still being made on short-term traffic prediction methods, specially for highway traffic based on punctual measurements. Literature on predicting the spatial distribution of the traffic in urban intersections is, however, very limited. This work presents a novel data-driven prediction algorithm based on Random Forests regression over spatio-temporal aggregated data of vehicle counts inside a grid. The proposed approach aims to estimate future distribution of V2X traffic demand, providing a valuable input for a dynamic management of radio resources in small cells. Radio Access Networks (RAN) working in the terahertz band and deployed in small cells are expected to meet the high-demanding data rate requirements of connected vehicles. However, terahertz frequency propagation has important limitations in outdoor scenarios, including distance propagation, high absorption coefficients values and low reflection properties. More concretely, in settings such as complex road intersections, dynamic signal blockage and shadowing effects may cause significant power losses and compromise the quality of service for some vehicles. The forthcoming network demand, estimated from the regression algorithm is used to compute the losses expected due to other vehicles potentially located between the transmitter and the receiver. We conclude that our approach, which is designed from a grid-like perspective, outperforms other traffic prediction methods and the combined result of these predictions with a dynamic reflector orientation algorithm, as a use case application, allows reducing the ratio of vehicles that do not receive a minimum signal power

    Channel Prediction for Mobile MIMO Wireless Communication Systems

    Temporal variation and frequency selectivity of wireless channels constitute a major drawback to the attainment of high gains in capacity and reliability offered by multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver of a mobile communication system. Limited feedback and adaptive transmission schemes such as adaptive modulation and coding, antenna selection, power allocation and scheduling have the potential to provide the platform of attaining the high transmission rate, capacity and QoS requirements in current and future wireless communication systems. Theses schemes require both the transmitter and receiver to have accurate knowledge of Channel State Information (CSI). In Time Division Duplex (TDD) systems, CSI at the transmitter can be obtained using channel reciprocity. In Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) systems, however, CSI is typically estimated at the receiver and fed back to the transmitter via a low-rate feedback link. Due to the inherent time delays in estimation, processing and feedback, the CSI obtained from the receiver may become outdated before its actual usage at the transmitter. This results in significant performance loss, especially in high mobility environments. There is therefore a need to extrapolate the varying channel into the future, far enough to account for the delay and mitigate the performance degradation. The research in this thesis investigates parametric modeling and prediction of mobile MIMO channels for both narrowband and wideband systems. The focus is on schemes that utilize the additional spatial information offered by multiple sampling of the wave-field in multi-antenna systems to aid channel prediction. The research has led to the development of several algorithms which can be used for long range extrapolation of time-varyingchannels. Based on spatial channel modeling approaches, simple and efficient methods for the extrapolation of narrowband MIMO channels are proposed. Various extensions were also developed. These include methods for wideband channels, transmission using polarized antenna arrays, and mobile-to-mobile systems. Performance bounds on the estimation and prediction error are vital when evaluating channel estimation and prediction schemes. For this purpose, analytical expressions for bound on the estimation and prediction of polarized and non-polarized MIMO channels are derived. Using the vector formulation of the Cramer Rao bound for function of parameters, readily interpretable closed-form expressions for the prediction error bounds were found for cases with Uniform Linear Array (ULA) and Uniform Planar Array (UPA). The derived performance bounds are very simple and so provide insight into system design. The performance of the proposed algorithms was evaluated using standardized channel models. The effects of the temporal variation of multipath parameters on prediction is studied and methods for jointly tracking the channel parameters are developed. The algorithms presented can be utilized to enhance the performance of limited feedback and adaptive MIMO transmission schemes
