    Video summarization by group scoring

    In this paper a new model for user-centered video summarization is presented. Involvement of more than one expert in generating the final video summary should be regarded as the main use case for this algorithm. This approach consists of three major steps. First, the video frames are scored by a group of operators. Next, these assigned scores are averaged to produce a singular value for each frame and lastly, the highest scored video frames alongside the corresponding audio and textual contents are extracted to be inserted into the summary. The effectiveness of this approach has been evaluated by comparing the video summaries generated by this system against the results from a number of automatic summarization tools that use different modalities for abstraction

    Personalized video summarization by highest quality frames

    In this work, a user-centered approach has been the basis for generation of the personalized video summaries. Primarily, the video experts score and annotate the video frames during the enrichment phase. Afterwards, the frames scores for different video segments will be updated based on the captured end-users (different with video experts) priorities towards existing video scenes. Eventually, based on the pre-defined skimming time, the highest scored video frames will be extracted to be included into the personalized video summaries. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed model, we have compared the video summaries generated by our system against the results from 4 other summarization tools using different modalities

    Story-based Video Retrieval in TV series using Plot Synopses

    We present a novel approach to search for plots in the story-line of structured videos such as TV series. To this end, we propose to align natural language descriptions of the videos, such as plot synopses, with the corresponding shots in the video. Guided by subtitles and person identities the align-ment problem is formulated as an optimization task over all possible assignments and solved efficiently using dynamic programming. We evaluate our approach on a novel dataset comprising of the complete season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and show good alignment performance and the abil-ity to retrieve plots in the storyline

    Goal event detection in soccer videos via collaborative multimodal analysis

    Detecting semantic events in sports video is crucial for video indexing and retrieval. Most existing works have exclusively relied on video content features, namely, directly available and extractable data from the visual and/or aural channels. Sole reliance on such data however, can be problematic due to the high-level semantic nature of video and the difficulty to properly align detected events with their exact time of occurrences. This paper proposes a framework for soccer goal event detection through collaborative analysis of multimodal features. Unlike previous approaches, the visual and aural contents are not directly scrutinized. Instead, an external textual source (i.e., minute-by-minute reports from sports websites) is used to initially localize the event search space. This step is vital as the event search space can significantly be reduced. This also makes further visual and aural analysis more efficient since excessive and unnecessary non-eventful segments are discarded, culminating in the accurate identification of the actual goal event segment. Experiments conducted on thirteen soccer matches are very promising with high accuracy rates being reported

    Video summarisation: A conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art

Copyright @ 2007 Elsevier Inc.Video summaries provide condensed and succinct representations of the content of a video stream through a combination of still images, video segments, graphical representations and textual descriptors. This paper presents a conceptual framework for video summarisation derived from the research literature and used as a means for surveying the research literature. The framework distinguishes between video summarisation techniques (the methods used to process content from a source video stream to achieve a summarisation of that stream) and video summaries (outputs of video summarisation techniques). Video summarisation techniques are considered within three broad categories: internal (analyse information sourced directly from the video stream), external (analyse information not sourced directly from the video stream) and hybrid (analyse a combination of internal and external information). Video summaries are considered as a function of the type of content they are derived from (object, event, perception or feature based) and the functionality offered to the user for their consumption (interactive or static, personalised or generic). It is argued that video summarisation would benefit from greater incorporation of external information, particularly user based information that is unobtrusively sourced, in order to overcome longstanding challenges such as the semantic gap and providing video summaries that have greater relevance to individual users
