Using Value Nets to Map Emerging Business Models in Massively Multiplayer Online Games

    Get PDF
The authors map some of the current Business Models in the Massively Multiplayer Online Player scenario. These maps represent Value Creation Systems by resorting to Value Net constructs and notations, and are offered here as a proof of concept and utility. The authors claim that these mappings can enable “readers”, managers and IT experts, to build new insights onto such Business Models and develop requirements for Information System infrastructure. When approaching the Value Creation System as a Value Net the goal is to think outside the conceptual box of Value Chains and understand how the different activities interact, by exposing the multiplicity of value types and flows. In doing this study the authors are attempting to synthesize a new Business Model proposal that could underlie the development of an infrastructure for the collaborative creation, distribution and exploration of online massively multiplayer games, beyond the traditional producer-consumer roles

A Conceptual Business Model Framework for Strategy and Value Addition: A Case Study of a Middleware Firm

    Get PDF
The traditional business model frameworks and concepts have been mainly used in the field of Information System (IS) and e-commerce for explanatory and descriptive purposes. I believe that there is a potential for the business model concept to be expanded for use by general businesses in strategic management. In this report, I will outline a conceptual framework for building a visual mapping of a business model. The conceptual model is a hybrid of two frameworks with the purpose of being used as a strategic tool for gaining new insight and value addition for any business. The model will be illustrated by a case study of a firm offering Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) middleware solutions for the online games industry

The primary objective of this report is to expand on the value creation system and the value added process of the MMOG industry as a whole. In the group report we focused mainly on the Middleware industry business model and how it adds value to the products while in this individual report I will attempt to shed the light over the MMOG industry as one industry with several separate processes/sub industries (Middleware, Game Development and Publishing)

Deliverable 2.1: Report on theoretical framework: Media institutions' activities and networks

    Get PDF
This report is dedicated to Work Package 2 – Media organisations’ characteristics and value chain. Work Package 2 is committed to the analysis of the media institutions1 integrated in the media clusters of Brussels and focuses on a socio-economical analysis of the actors from a macro view. The Deliverable was built on the findings of Deliverable 1.1a and 1.1.b. The output of this Deliverable shall guide the mapping of the media institutions through investigating the characteristics of media institutions. Based on these findings, an extensive list of media institutions will be extracted from available data sources and mapped, which will be presented in Deliverable 2.2. Additionally, the findings of delineating media institutions will be also used in other media institution-related Deliverable

PRICING STRATEGIES FOR ONLINE MULTIPLAYER GAMES

    Get PDF
This dissertation examines the different pricing strategies available to online multiplayer game publishers. We develop mathematical models of the pricing decision that the publisher engages in and conduct a numerical experiment to identify critical parameters for the pricing decision. We also develop an agent based simulation to further examine the influence of these parameters on the dynamics between the publisher and consumers and make recommendations about the conditions under which certain pricing strategies are superior to others

Modeling Business Models: A cross-disciplinary Analysis of Business Model Modeling Languages and Directions for Future Research

    Get PDF
Modeling languages for business models are a powerful and flexible means of representing and communicating knowledge related to business models. More than fifteen years after Osterwalder et al. (2005) clarified the ontology for the business model concept in this journal, we offer a systematic and cross-disciplinary assessment of the literature on business model modeling languages (BMMLs) that facilitate the visualization of this concept. In so doing, we synthesize and organize the knowledge dispersed across different disciplines in which BMMLs have originated and highlight the potential weaknesses in this literature to offer solid insights for future research. Our analysis reveals the existence of 17 BMMLs that have originated in traditional domains such as strategy and information systems, but also emerging domains such as sustainability. We contrast and compare these BMMLs along three dimensions: semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. We also analyze research that has made use of these BMMLs, differentiating between research that is conducted with a given BMML and research that is conducted about a given BMML. We conclude by offering a research agenda in which we illustrate the main challenges associated with the lack of well-accepted semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic foundations of BMMLs and outline opportunities for future research
