Topic Detection and Classification in Consumer Web Communication Data

    Get PDF
In this study, we examined temporal variation in topics regarding new products by classifying words into clusters based on the co-occurrence of words in Twitter entries. To help identify market trends, analysis of consumer tweet data has received much attention. We collected Twitter entries about new products based on their specific expressions of sentiment or interest. The matrix obtained from the Twitter entries are sparse and of high dimensionality, so we need to perform a dimensionality reduction analysis. We analyzed the matrix using non-negative matrix factorization to reduce the dimensionality. We also clarified temporal variation by using the weight coefficients which show the strength of associations between entries and topics. It is important to consider the temporal variation of these topics when detecting trending topics by classifying words into clusters based on co-occurrence of words

With the recent advances in radio-frequency identification (RFID), low-cost wireless sensor devices, and Web technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) approach has gained momentum in connecting everyday objects to the Internet and facilitating machine-to-human and machine-to-machine communication with the physical world. While IoT offers the capability to connect and integrate both digital and physical entities, enabling a whole new class of applications and services, several significant challenges need to be addressed before these applications and services can be fully realized. A fundamental challenge centers around managing IoT data, typically produced in dynamic and volatile environments, which is not only extremely large in scale and volume, but also noisy, and continuous. This article surveys the main techniques and state-of-the-art research efforts in IoT from data-centric perspectives, including data stream processing, data storage models, complex event processing, and searching in IoT. Open research issues for IoT data management are also discussed

Dirichlet belief networks for topic structure learning

Recently, considerable research effort has been devoted to developing deep architectures for topic models to learn topic structures. Although several deep models have been proposed to learn better topic proportions of documents, how to leverage the benefits of deep structures for learning word distributions of topics has not yet been rigorously studied. Here we propose a new multi-layer generative process on word distributions of topics, where each layer consists of a set of topics and each topic is drawn from a mixture of the topics of the layer above. As the topics in all layers can be directly interpreted by words, the proposed model is able to discover interpretable topic hierarchies. As a self-contained module, our model can be flexibly adapted to different kinds of topic models to improve their modelling accuracy and interpretability. Extensive experiments on text corpora demonstrate the advantages of the proposed model.Comment: accepted in NIPS 201

Hilltops and Marches: A Cultural and Semiotic Analysis of Pepsi and Coca-Cola Advertising Strategies

    Get PDF
The Coca-Cola Company released an advertisement in 1971 that had powerful themes of unity in a time of significant discord around the world. Almost 50 years later, the Pepsi Company released an advertisement that aimed to accomplish similar values of unity and commonality when the world seemed at odds with itself. While both advertisements sought to convey similar messages, the reception could not have been more different. Coca-Cola has experienced continued praise for their famous “Hilltop” advertisement while Pepsi was forced to take their advertisement down within 24 hours of its release. This paper utilizes semiotic theory to analyze the signs in the advertisements to create an understanding of how each advertisement was perceived differently. In order to understand a semiotic approach, this paper also approaches semiotics with respect to the historical contexts surrounding both advertisements

Spillover Effects of Management Companies in the Vtuber Market

Increasing usage of social media has given subsequent birth to micro-celebrities, or social media influencers (SMIs). Despite the fact that SMIs function as key opinion-leaders in society and the market, little is known about what traits make an SMI popular in the first place. While SMIs are generally considered to gain popularity from rock-bottom through individual endeavors alone, we find an exceptional media sector consisting of virtual YouTubers (vtubers). A vtuber, unlike the usual human YouTuber, is an artificially created figure strictly managed by sponsoring companies from the beginning of his/her debut. Finding a similarity between sponsor-vtuber relationships and parent-child relationships within brand extensions, we ran a random effects model against 560 company-owned vtubers to check whether similar spillover effects can be observed in a social media context as well. Our research yielded positive results, suggesting the existence of persistent spillover effects based on parent-brand popularity. An additional time series analysis was conducted against the weekly changes in the size of management agency influence on their affiliated vtubers. An ARIMA(1,2,0) model demonstrates a high fit with our data, and we find that the model confirms a constantly decreasing size of influence along with the passage of time. Chapter 1. Developling a communication strategy to enter the mariculture market

    Get PDF
The purpose of this master project is to develop a communication plan for a new Portuguese off-shore mariculture company called AtlanticPrime. The ever-rising demand for good quality protein requires finding new sustainable alternatives to meat production and intensive fishing. Overfishing is one of the greatest challenges of our times. It threatens the survival of various marine species, the balance of the ecosystems and the living conditions of entire communities who depend on fishing to make a living. Aquaculture is an industry that has been significantly growing in the last years. It has become a very competitive market that counts with multiple players from all parts of the world. The species produced and the methods used are extremely diverse. Being so recent, AtlanticPrime does not have a communication strategy yet. Moreover, considering that mariculture is not a commonly known subject, it is extremely important to invest in effective and innovative communication ideas that generate brand awareness and differentiate the company right from the beginning of its activity. AtlanticPrime’s proposed communication strategy integrates both traditional and digital tools and is meant to be implemented during the period of one year. Prior to the creation of this plan, it was made an extensive research of external and internal factors related to the company, using different sources of information. The recommended ideas are directed to other businesses (buyers), as well as to end-consumers, and follow the latest communication trendsO objectivo deste projecto é desenvolver um plano de comunicação para uma nova empresa portuguesa de Maricultura off-shore.
