Towards a Security, Privacy, Dependability, Interoperability Framework for the Internet of Things
A popular application of ambient intelligence systems constitutes of assisting living services on smart buildings. As intelligence is imported in embedded equipment, the system becomes able to provide smart services (e.g. control lights, airconditioning, provide energy management services etc.). IoT is the main enabler of such environments. However, the interconnection of these cyber-physical systems and the processing of personal data raise serious security and privacy issues. In this paper we present a framework that can guarantee Security, Privacy, Dependability and Interoperability (SPDI) in IoT. Taking advantage of the underlying IoT deployment, the proposed framework not only implements the requested smart functionality but also provide modelling and administration that can guarantee those SPDI properties. Moreover, we provide an application example of the framework in a smart building scenario
UML-SOA-Sec and Saleem's MDS Services Composition Framework for Secure Business Process Modelling of Services Oriented Applications
In Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) environment, a software application is a
composition of services, which are scattered across enterprises and architectures.
Security plays a vital role during the design, development and operation of SOA
applications. However, analysis of today's software development approaches reveals
that the engineering of security into the system design is often neglected. Security is
incorporated in an ad-hoc manner or integrated during the applications development
phase or administration phase or out sourced. SOA security is cross-domain and all of
the required information is not available at downstream phases. The post-hoc, low-level
integration of security has a negative impact on the resulting SOA applications. General
purpose modeling languages like Unified Modeling Language (UML) are used for
designing the software system; however, these languages lack the knowledge of the
specific domain and "security" is one of the essential domains. A Domain Specific
Language (DSL), named the "UML-SOA-Sec" is proposed to facilitate the modeling of
security objectives along the business process modeling of SOA applications.
Furthermore, Saleem's MDS (Model Driven Security) services composition framework
is proposed for the development of a secure web service composition
Relevance, benefits, and problems of software modelling and model driven techniques—A survey in the Italian industry
Context Claimed benefits of software modelling and model driven techniques are improvements in productivity, portability, maintainability and interoperability. However, little effort has been devoted at collecting evidence to evaluate their actual relevance, benefits and usage complications. Goal The main goals of this paper are: (1) assess the diffusion and relevance of software modelling and MD techniques in the Italian industry, (2) understand the expected and achieved benefits, and (3) identify which problems limit/prevent their diffusion. Method We conducted an exploratory personal opinion survey with a sample of 155 Italian software professionals by means of a Web-based questionnaire on-line from February to April 2011. Results Software modelling and MD techniques are very relevant in the Italian industry. The adoption of simple modelling brings common benefits (better design support, documentation improvement, better maintenance, and higher software quality), while MD techniques make it easier to achieve: improved standardization, higher productivity, and platform independence. We identified problems, some hindering adoption (too much effort required and limited usefulness) others preventing it (lack of competencies and supporting tools). Conclusions The relevance represents an important objective motivation for researchers in this area. The relationship between techniques and attainable benefits represents an instrument for practitioners planning the adoption of such techniques. In addition the findings may provide hints for companies and universitie
Modeling IoT-aware Business Processes - A State of the Art Report
This research report presents an analysis of the state of the art of modeling
Internet of Things (IoT)-aware business processes. IOT links the physical world
to the digital world. Traditionally, we would find information about events and
processes in the physical world in the digital world entered by humans and
humans using this information to control the physical world. In the IoT
paradigm, the physical world is equipped with sensors and actuators to create a
direct link with the digital world. Business processes are used to coordinate a
complex environment including multiple actors for a common goal, typically in
the context of administrative work. In the past few years, we have seen
research efforts on the possibilities to model IoT- aware business processes,
extending process coordination to real world entities directly. This set of
research efforts is relatively small when compared to the overall research
effort into the IoT and much of the work is still in the early research stage.
To create a basis for a bridge between IoT and BPM, the goal of this report is
to collect and analyze the state of the art of existing frameworks for modeling
IoT-aware business processes.Comment: 42 page
A Model-Driven Engineering Approach for ROS using Ontological Semantics
This paper presents a novel ontology-driven software engineering approach for
the development of industrial robotics control software. It introduces the
ReApp architecture that synthesizes model-driven engineering with semantic
technologies to facilitate the development and reuse of ROS-based components
and applications. In ReApp, we show how different ontological classification
systems for hardware, software, and capabilities help developers in discovering
suitable software components for their tasks and in applying them correctly.
The proposed model-driven tooling enables developers to work at higher
abstraction levels and fosters automatic code generation. It is underpinned by
ontologies to minimize discontinuities in the development workflow, with an
integrated development environment presenting a seamless interface to the user.
First results show the viability and synergy of the selected approach when
searching for or developing software with reuse in mind.Comment: Presented at DSLRob 2015 (arXiv:1601.00877), Stefan Zander, Georg

Tools of the Trade: A Survey of Various Agent Based Modeling Platforms
Agent Based Modeling (ABM) toolkits are as diverse as the community of people who use them. With so many toolkits available, the choice of which one is best suited for a project is left to word of mouth, past experiences in using particular toolkits and toolkit publicity. This is especially troublesome for projects that require specialization. Rather than using toolkits that are the most publicized but are designed for general projects, using this paper, one will be able to choose a toolkit that already exists and that may be built especially for one's particular domain and specialized needs. In this paper, we examine the entire continuum of agent based toolkits. We characterize each based on 5 important characteristics users consider when choosing a toolkit, and then we categorize the characteristics into user-friendly taxonomies that aid in rapid indexing and easy reference.Agent Based Modeling, Individual Based Model, Multi Agent Systems
Design Environments for Complex Systems
The paper describes an approach for modeling complex systems by hiding as much formal details as possible from the user, still allowing verification and simulation of the model. The interface is based on UML to make the environment available to the largest audience. To carry out analysis, verification and simulation we automatically extract process algebras specifications from UML models. The results of the analysis is then reflected back in the UML model by annotating diagrams. The formal model includes stochastic information to handle quantitative parameters. We present here the stochastic -calculus and we discuss the implementation of its probabilistic support that allows simulation of processes. We exploit the benefits of our approach in two applicative domains: global computing and systems biology
Model-driven semantic Web service composition
As the number of available Web services increases there is a growing demand to realise complex business processes by combining and reusing available Web services. The reuse and combination of services results in a composition of Web services that may also involve services provided in the Internet. With semantically described Web services, an automated matchmaking of capabilities can help identify suitable services. To address the need for semantically de-fined Web services, OWL-S and WSML have been proposed as competing semantic Web service languages. We show how the proposed semantic Web service languages can be utilized within a model-driven methodology for build-ing composite Web services. In addition we combine the semantic-based discovery with the support for processing QoS requirements to apply a ranking or a selection of the candidates. The methodology describes a process which guides the developer through four phases, starting with the initial modelling, and ending with a new composite service that can be deployed and published to be consumed by other users.
