Mono3D++: Monocular 3D Vehicle Detection with Two-Scale 3D Hypotheses and Task Priors
We present a method to infer 3D pose and shape of vehicles from a single
image. To tackle this ill-posed problem, we optimize two-scale projection
consistency between the generated 3D hypotheses and their 2D
pseudo-measurements. Specifically, we use a morphable wireframe model to
generate a fine-scaled representation of vehicle shape and pose. To reduce its
sensitivity to 2D landmarks, we jointly model the 3D bounding box as a coarse
representation which improves robustness. We also integrate three task priors,
including unsupervised monocular depth, a ground plane constraint as well as
vehicle shape priors, with forward projection errors into an overall energy
function.Comment: Proc. of the AAAI, September 201
Probabilistic ToF and Stereo Data Fusion Based on Mixed Pixel Measurement Models
This paper proposes a method for fusing data acquired by a ToF camera and a stereo pair based on a model for depth measurement by ToF cameras which accounts also for depth discontinuity artifacts due to the mixed pixel effect. Such model is exploited within both a ML and a MAP-MRF frameworks for ToF and stereo data fusion. The proposed MAP-MRF framework is characterized by site-dependent range values, a rather important feature since it can be used both to improve the accuracy and to decrease the computational complexity of standard MAP-MRF approaches. This paper, in order to optimize the site dependent global cost function characteristic of the proposed MAP-MRF approach, also introduces an extension to Loopy Belief Propagation which can be used in other contexts. Experimental data validate the proposed ToF measurements model and the effectiveness of the proposed fusion techniques
Entropy-difference based stereo error detection
Stereo depth estimation is error-prone; hence, effective error detection
methods are desirable. Most such existing methods depend on characteristics of
the stereo matching cost curve, making them unduly dependent on functional
details of the matching algorithm. As a remedy, we propose a novel error
detection approach based solely on the input image and its depth map. Our
assumption is that, entropy of any point on an image will be significantly
higher than the entropy of its corresponding point on the image's depth map. In
this paper, we propose a confidence measure, Entropy-Difference (ED) for stereo
depth estimates and a binary classification method to identify incorrect
depths. Experiments on the Middlebury dataset show the effectiveness of our
method. Our proposed stereo confidence measure outperforms 17 existing measures
in all aspects except occlusion detection. Established metrics such as
precision, accuracy, recall, and area-under-curve are used to demonstrate the
effectiveness of our method
Virtual Rephotography: Novel View Prediction Error for 3D Reconstruction
The ultimate goal of many image-based modeling systems is to render
photo-realistic novel views of a scene without visible artifacts. Existing
evaluation metrics and benchmarks focus mainly on the geometric accuracy of the
reconstructed model, which is, however, a poor predictor of visual accuracy.
Furthermore, using only geometric accuracy by itself does not allow evaluating
systems that either lack a geometric scene representation or utilize coarse
proxy geometry. Examples include light field or image-based rendering systems.
We propose a unified evaluation approach based on novel view prediction error
that is able to analyze the visual quality of any method that can render novel
views from input images. One of the key advantages of this approach is that it
does not require ground truth geometry. This dramatically simplifies the
creation of test datasets and benchmarks. It also allows us to evaluate the
quality of an unknown scene during the acquisition and reconstruction process,
which is useful for acquisition planning. We evaluate our approach on a range
of methods including standard geometry-plus-texture pipelines as well as
image-based rendering techniques, compare it to existing geometry-based
benchmarks, and demonstrate its utility for a range of use cases.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, paper was submitted to ACM Transactions on

Reliable fusion of ToF and stereo depth driven by confidence measures
In this paper we propose a framework for the fusion of depth data produced by a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera and stereo vision system. Initially, depth data acquired by the ToF camera are upsampled by an ad-hoc algorithm based on image segmentation and bilateral filtering. In parallel a dense disparity map is obtained using the Semi- Global Matching stereo algorithm. Reliable confidence measures are extracted for both the ToF and stereo depth data. In particular, ToF confidence also accounts for the mixed-pixel effect and the stereo confidence accounts for the relationship between the pointwise matching costs and the cost obtained by the semi-global optimization. Finally, the two depth maps are synergically fused by enforcing the local consistency of depth data accounting for the confidence of the two data sources at each location. Experimental results clearly show that the proposed method produces accurate high resolution depth maps and outperforms the compared fusion algorithms
Semantic Visual Localization
Robust visual localization under a wide range of viewing conditions is a
fundamental problem in computer vision. Handling the difficult cases of this
problem is not only very challenging but also of high practical relevance,
e.g., in the context of life-long localization for augmented reality or
autonomous robots. In this paper, we propose a novel approach based on a joint
3D geometric and semantic understanding of the world, enabling it to succeed
under conditions where previous approaches failed. Our method leverages a novel
generative model for descriptor learning, trained on semantic scene completion
as an auxiliary task. The resulting 3D descriptors are robust to missing
observations by encoding high-level 3D geometric and semantic information.
