    Understanding and Affecting Student Reasoning About Sound Waves

    Student learning of sound waves can be helped through the creation of group-learning classroom materials whose development and design rely on explicit investigations into student understanding. We describe reasoning in terms of sets of resources, i.e. grouped building blocks of thinking that are commonly used in many different settings. Students in our university physics classes often used sets of resources that were different from the ones we wish them to use. By designing curriculum materials that ask students to think about the physics from a different view, we bring about improvement in student understanding of sound waves. Our curriculum modifications are specific to our own classes, but our description of student learning is more generally useful for teachers. We describe how students can use multiple sets of resources in their thinking, and raise questions that should be considered by both instructors and researchers.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, 28 references, 7 notes.     Myth Understanding is a prototype of an interactive educational program geared towards elementary school children. It provides self-paced instruction, mixing animation, graphics, and sound with information pertaining to earth science. Mythological characters from ancient Greece are sources which provide the child with scientific as well as historic information. In effect, children learn about ancient Greek mythology as they discover the mysteries and makeup of the earth. Children are given the flexibility to decide on what information to view ac cording to their own personal preference. Meticulous attention was given to the artwork interface design and layout. Myth Understanding incorporates multimedia design to make Greek mythology and earth science come alive, exhibiting facts that are not only illustrative, but at the same time entertaining and informative. The evolution of Myth Understanding will be explored in the following chapters. Initial concepts, research, character development and tqaechnical considerations will be addressed.     AN EXPLORATORY MIXED METHODS STUDY OF PROSPECTIVE MIDDLE GRADES TEACHERS\u27 MATHEMATICAL CONNECTIONS WHILE COMPLETING INVESTIGATIVE TASKS IN GEOMETRY

    With the implementation of No Child Left Behind legislation and a push for reform curricula, prospective teachers must be prepared to facilitate learning at a conceptual level. To address these concerns, an exploratory mixed methods investigation of twenty-eight prospective middle grades teachers’ mathematics knowledge for teaching geometry and mathematical connection-making was conducted at a large public southeastern university. Participants completed a diagnostic assessment in mathematics with a focus on geometry and measurement (CRMSTD, 2007), a mathematical connections evaluation, and a card sort activity. Mixed methods data analysis revealed prospective middle grades teachers’ mathematics knowledge for teaching geometry was underdeveloped and the mathematical connections made by prospective middle grades teachers were more procedural than conceptual in nature

    Empowering Youth: The Potential of Athletics

    My thesis focuses on designing a sports complex geared towards mentoring and encouraging young kids in athletics and opening their eyes to future opportunities. Many children today enjoy participation in sports, but society puts so much pressure on performance that the fun of learning and competing is lost. The goal of this project is to create a space that builds character by supporting relationships between athletes, parents, and coaches. In order to succeed in these goals, this project asks the question: how can intentional design influence the people interacting with the built environment? Can a building help foster relationships? This complex would be structured to support kids of all backgrounds regardless of sport, ability, or socioeconomic status. The master plan includes facilities for multiple disciplines including Special Olympics, non sport specific team building activities, as well as spaces to connect with other athletes and coaches. Overall, the center will be used as a vehicle to make a positive impact on the future of our youth
