    Security and usability of a personalized user authentication paradigm : insights from a longitudinal study with three healthcare organizations

    Funding information: This research has been partially supported by the EU Horizon 2020 Grant 826278 "Securing Medical Data in Smart Patient-Centric Healthcare Systems" (Serums) , and the Research and Innovation Foundation (Project DiversePass: COMPLEMENTARY/0916/0182).This paper proposes a user-adaptable and personalized authentication paradigm for healthcare organizations, which anticipates to seamlessly reflect patients’ episodic and autobiographical memories to graphical and textual passwords aiming to improve the security strength of user-selected passwords and provide a positive user experience. We report on a longitudinal study that spanned over three years in which three public European healthcare organizations participated in order to design and evaluate the aforementioned paradigm. Three studies were conducted (n=169) with different stakeholders: i) a verification study aiming to identify existing authentication practices of the three healthcare organizations with diverse stakeholders (n=9); ii) a patient-centric feasibility study during which users interacted with the proposed authentication system (n=68); and iii) a human guessing attack study focusing on vulnerabilities among people sharing common experiences within location-aware images used for graphical passwords (n=92). Results revealed that the suggested paradigm scored high with regards to users’ likeability, perceived security, usability and trust, but more importantly it assists the creation of more secure passwords. On the downside, the suggested paradigm introduces password guessing vulnerabilities by individuals sharing common experiences with the end-users.     Adaptive Visualization for Focused Personalized Information Retrieval

    The new trend on the Web has totally changed todays information access environment. The traditional information overload problem has evolved into the qualitative level beyond the quantitative growth. The mode of producing and consuming information is changing and we need a new paradigm for accessing information.Personalized search is one of the most promising answers to this problem. However, it still follows the old interaction model and representation method of classic information retrieval approaches. This limitation can harm the potential of personalized search, with which users are intended to interact with the system, learn and investigate the problem, and collaborate with the system to reach the final goal.This dissertation proposes to incorporate interactive visualization into personalized search in order to overcome the limitation. By combining the personalized search and the interac- tive visualization, we expect our approach will be able to help users to better explore the information space and locate relevant information more efficiently.We extended a well-known visualization framework called VIBE (Visual Information Browsing Environment) and implemented Adaptive VIBE, so that it can fit into the per- sonalized searching environment. We tested the effectiveness of this adaptive visualization method and investigated its strengths and weaknesses by conducting a full-scale user study.We also tried to enrich the user models with named-entities considering the possibility that the traditional keyword-based user models could harm the effectiveness of the system in the context of interactive information retrieval.The results of the user study showed that the Adaptive VIBE could improve the precision of the personalized search system and could help the users to find out more diverse set of information. The named-entity based user model integrated into Adaptive VIBE showed improvements of precision of user annotations while maintaining the level of diverse discovery of information

    An efficient approach to generating location-sensitive recommendations in ad-hoc social network environments

    Social recommendation has been popular and successful in various urban sustainable applications such as online sharing, products recommendation and shopping services. These applications allow users to form several implicit social networks through their daily social interactions. The users in such social networks can rate some interesting items and give comments. The majority of the existing studies have investigated the rating prediction and recommendation of items based on user-item bipartite graph and user-user social graph, so called social recommendation. However, the spatial factor was not considered in their recommendation mechanisms. With the rapid development of the service of location-based social networks, the spatial information gradually affects the quality and correlation of rating and recommendation of items. This paper proposes spatial social union (SSU), an approach of similarity measurement between two users that integrates the interconnection among users, items and locations. The SSU-aware location-sensitive recommendation algorithm is then devised. We evaluate and compare the proposed approach with the existing rating prediction and item recommendation algorithms subject to a real-life data set. Experimental results show that the proposed SSU-aware recommendation algorithm is more effective in recommending items with the better consideration of user's preference and location.This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 61372187.     Reviewing Developments of Graph Convolutional Network Techniques for Recommendation Systems

    The Recommender system is a vital information service on today's Internet. Recently, graph neural networks have emerged as the leading approach for recommender systems. We try to review recent literature on graph neural network-based recommender systems, covering the background and development of both recommender systems and graph neural networks. Then categorizing recommender systems by their settings and graph neural networks by spectral and spatial models, we explore the motivation behind incorporating graph neural networks into recommender systems. We also analyze challenges and open problems in graph construction, embedding propagation and aggregation, and computation efficiency.     Abstraction and cartographic generalization of geographic user-generated content: use-case motivated investigations for mobile users

    On a daily basis, a conventional internet user queries different internet services (available on different platforms) to gather information and make decisions. In most cases, knowingly or not, this user consumes data that has been generated by other internet users about his/her topic of interest (e.g. an ideal holiday destination with a family traveling by a van for 10 days). Commercial service providers, such as search engines, travel booking websites, video-on-demand providers, food takeaway mobile apps and the like, have found it useful to rely on the data provided by other users who have commonalities with the querying user. Examples of commonalities are demography, location, interests, internet address, etc. This process has been in practice for more than a decade and helps the service providers to tailor their results based on the collective experience of the contributors. There has been also interest in the different research communities (including GIScience) to analyze and understand the data generated by internet users. The research focus of this thesis is on finding answers for real-world problems in which a user interacts with geographic information. The interactions can be in the form of exploration, querying, zooming and panning, to name but a few. We have aimed our research at investigating the potential of using geographic user-generated content to provide new ways of preparing and visualizing these data. Based on different scenarios that fulfill user needs, we have investigated the potential of finding new visual methods relevant to each scenario. The methods proposed are mainly based on pre-processing and analyzing data that has been offered by data providers (both commercial and non-profit organizations). But in all cases, the contribution of the data was done by ordinary internet users in an active way (compared to passive data collections done by sensors). The main contributions of this thesis are the proposals for new ways of abstracting geographic information based on user-generated content contributions. Addressing different use-case scenarios and based on different input parameters, data granularities and evidently geographic scales, we have provided proposals for contemporary users (with a focus on the users of location-based services, or LBS). The findings are based on different methods such as semantic analysis, density analysis and data enrichment. In the case of realization of the findings of this dissertation, LBS users will benefit from the findings by being able to explore large amounts of geographic information in more abstract and aggregated ways and get their results based on the contributions of other users. The research outcomes can be classified in the intersection between cartography, LBS and GIScience. Based on our first use case we have proposed the inclusion of an extended semantic measure directly in the classic map generalization process. In our second use case we have focused on simplifying geographic data depiction by reducing the amount of information using a density-triggered method. And finally, the third use case was focused on summarizing and visually representing relatively large amounts of information by depicting geographic objects matched to the salient topics emerged from the data

    Semantic representation of context models: a framework for analyzing and understanding

    pp. 10International audienceContext-aware systems are applications that adapt themselves to several situations involving user, network, data, hardware and the application itself. In this paper, we review several context models proposed in different domains: content adaptation, service adaptation, information retrieval, etc. The purpose of this review is to expose the representation of this notion semantically. According to this, we propose a framework that analyzes and compares different context models. Such a framework intends helping understanding and analyzing of such models, and consequently the definition of new ones. This framework is based on the fact that context-aware systems use context models in order to formalize and limit the notion of context and that relevant information differs from a domain to another and depends on the effective use of this information. Based on this framework, we consider in this paper a particular application domain, Business Processes, in which the notion of context remains unexplored, although it is required for flexibility and adaptability. We propose, in this paper, an ontology-based context model focusing on this particular domain
