    Get PDF
To provide the seamless mobility in heterogeneous wireless networks two significant methods, simulated annealing (SA) and genetic algorithms (GAs) are hybrid. In this paradigm, vertical handovers (VHs) are necessary for seamless mobility. In this paper, the hybrid algorithm has the ability to find the optimal network to connect with a good quality of service (QoS) in accordance with the user's preferences. The intelligent algorithm was developed to provide solutions near to real time and to avoid slow and considerable computations according to the features of the mobile devices. Moreover, a cost function is used to sustain the chosen QoS during transition between networks, which is measured in terms of the bandwidth, BER, ABR, SNR and monetary cost. Simulation results presented that choosing the SA rules would minimise the cost function and the GA-SA algorithm could reduce the number of unnecessary handovers, and thereby avoid the 'Ping-Pong' effect

Traffic-Driven Energy Efficient Operational Mechanisms in Cellular Access Networks

    Get PDF
Recent explosive growth in mobile data traffic is increasing energy consumption in cellular networks at an incredible rate. Moreover, as a direct result of the conventional static network provisioning approach, a significant amount of electrical energy is being wasted in the existing networks. Therefore, in recent time, the issue of designing energy efficient cellular networks has drawn significant attention, which is also the foremost motivation behind this research. The proposed research is particularly focused on the design of self-organizing type traffic-sensitive dynamic network reconfiguring mechanisms for energy efficiency in cellular systems. Under the proposed techniques, radio access networks (RANs) are adaptively reconfigured using less equipment leading to reduced energy utilization. Several energy efficient cellular network frameworks by employing inter-base station (BS) cooperation in RANs are proposed. Under these frameworks, based on the instantaneous traffic demand, BSs are dynamically switched between active and sleep modes by redistributing traffic among them and thus, energy savings is achieved. The focus is then extended to exploiting the availability of multiple cellular networks for extracting energy savings through inter-RAN cooperation. Mathematical models for both of these single-RAN and multi-RAN cooperation mechanisms are also formulated. An alternative energy saving technique using dynamic sectorization (DS) under which some of the sectors in the underutilized BSs are turned into sleep mode is also proposed. Algorithms for both the distributed and the centralized implementations are developed. Finally, a two-dimensional energy efficient network provisioning mechanism is proposed by jointly applying both the DS and the dynamic BS switching. Extensive simulations are carried out, which demonstrate the capability of the proposed mechanisms in substantially enhancing the energy efficiency of cellular networks

Aspects of Critical Communications in Disturbance Scenarios

Infrastructures are the foundations of modern societies. The most important ones are the so-called critical infrastructures: mobile networks and electricity networks. If these networks are damaged or otherwise unavailable, the functionality of the whole society is at risk and can result even in public safety hazards. Furthermore, people expect all the time ubiquitous access to internet through mobile networks as many services rely on these wireless networks. The dependence is growing all the time as the number of worldwide subscriptions has already exceeded the world population and the amount of internet of things (IoT) and other connected devices continues to increase exponentially. This thesis focuses on the critical communications aspects of mobile networks during disturbance scenarios. These are defined as situations where, e.g. there is a power blackout in the electricity network, which affects the functionality of the mobile network. The contributions of this thesis can be divided into three main themes. The first one is the actual functionality of mobile networks during disturbance scenarios. This includes finding out how the behavior of subscribers changes when there is an uncommon disturbance scenario in the mobile network and how to prolong the disturbance time functionality of the existing networks. The results show that subscribers utilize mobile networks more than usual already before the power blackout starts when they try to find out information about the status of an upcoming storm. Immediately after the disturbance scenario starts, the subscribers within the blackout area are more active as the statistics show 73 % increase in the number of new calls and 84 % in the amount of short message service (SMS) messages. The results show also that the majority of mobile network availability is lost after 3–4 hours from the start of the incident. In order to prolong this availability time, simulations are performed to find out how utilizing only a portion of the available base station (BS) sites affects the service coverage. The results show that around 20 % of BS sites would be enough to cover 75 % of the original service coverage. Therefore, the operational time of the so-called mobile network backup coverage could be increased several times given that core network (CN) and backhaul network are also operational. The second main theme in this thesis presents a new developed situation awareness system (SAS) that combines the outage information of both mobile and electricity networks. This is an important tool for monitoring the networks and performing disaster and disturbance management. The user interface of the developed SAS is a map view showing the outage information, i.e. the faults, in both networks. It utilizes operational data from both networks such as the coverage outage areas of the mobile network and the outages of transformers in the electricity network in near real-time. The developed SAS helps to prioritize maintenance and repair work to the most critical areas as well as help to form a better overall situation awareness that fire and rescue services and authorities could utilize for improving public safety actions. The last main theme in the thesis considers innovative solutions in order to find out methods to improve the performance, i.e., to mitigate the outage of mobile networks in disturbance scenarios. The three different approaches presented are the indirect guidance of subscribers, the concept of a temporary low altitude platform (LAP) network with the help of drones, and the concept of a macro sensor network (MSN). First, the energy and capacity aspects of mobile networks can be improved when the subscribers are indirectly guided to self-optimize their location in the serving cell area. This can result in serving more user equipment (UEs) within a cell or to decrease the amount of energy needed for transmissions. Next, the coverage aspects of a LAP system are studied in order to find out the suitability of forming a temporary emergency coverage with a wireless local area network (WLAN) equipped drones. The results show that this kind of approach could provide a suitable emergency coverage for a limited area with a reasonable number of drones. Finally, a framework for MSN is studied to investigate the possibility of bringing wireless sensor network (WSN) functionalities into mobile networks. The results show that the concept of MSN could remarkably improve the resilience of mobile networks in situations where the backhaul connection is broken. However, implementing and further developing this kind of functionality will require changes in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications and self-organizing network (SON) features within the network.Overall, this thesis provides insight on how to develop the current and future mobile networks toward more resilient infrastructures. It highlights the importance of critical communications as a fundamental part of modern societies. Thus, securing the functionality and performance of mobile networks in all situations is crucial. As a result, the contributions in this thesis can be utilized as a starting point in the future research to develop new functionalities for mobile networks. One of such approaches can be a safety mode, which would improve the mobile network resiliency during disasters and disturbance scenarios

Access network selection schemes for multiple calls in next generation wireless networks

There is an increasing demand for internet services by mobile subscribers over the wireless access networks, with limited radio resources and capacity constraints. A viable solution to this capacity crunch is the deployment of heterogeneous networks. However, in this wireless environment, the choice of the most appropriate Radio Access Technology (RAT) that can Tsustain or meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users' applications require careful planning and cost efficient radio resource management methods. Previous research works on access network selection have focused on selecting a suitable RAT for a user's single call request. With the present request for multiple calls over wireless access networks, where each call has different QoS requirements and the available networks exhibit dynamic channel conditions, the choice of a suitable RAT capable of providing the "Always Best Connected" (ABC) experience for the user becomes a challenge. In this thesis, the problem of selecting the suitable RAT that is capable of meeting the QoS requirements for multiple call requests by mobile users in access networks is investigated. In addressing this problem, we proposed the use of Complex PRoprtional ASsesment (COPRAS) and Consensus-based Multi-Attribute Group Decision Making (MAGDM) techniques as novel and viable RAT selection methods for a grouped-multiple call. The performance of the proposed COPRAS multi-attribute decision making approach to RAT selection for a grouped-call has been evaluated through simulations in different network scenarios. The results show that the COPRAS method, which is simple and flexible, is more efficient in the selection of appropriate RAT for group multiple calls. The COPRAS method reduces handoff frequency and is computationally inexpensive when compared with other methods such as the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) and Multiplicative Exponent Weighting (MEW). The application of the proposed consensus-based algorithm in the selection of a suitable RAT for group-multiple calls, comprising of voice, video-streaming, and file-downloading has been intensively investigated. This algorithm aggregates the QoS requirement of the individual application into a collective QoS for the group calls. This new and novel approach to RAT selection for a grouped-call measures and compares the consensus degree of the collective solution and individual solution against a predefined threshold value. Using the methods of coincidence among preferences and coincidence among solutions with a predefined consensus threshold of 0.9, we evaluated the performance of the consensus-based RAT selection scheme through simulations under different network scenarios. The obtained results show that both methods of coincidences have the capability to select the most suitable RAT for a group of multiple calls. However, the method of coincidence among solutions achieves better results in terms of accuracy, it is less complex and the number of iteration before achieving the predefined consensus threshold is reduced. A utility-based RAT selection method for parallel traffic-streaming in an overlapped heterogeneous wireless network has also been developed. The RAT selection method was modeled with constraints on terminal battery power, service cost and network congestion to select a specified number of RATs that optimizes the terminal interface utility. The results obtained show an optimum RAT selection strategy that maximizes the terminal utility and selects the best RAT combinations for user's parallel-streaming for voice, video and file-download
