    Navigation Support for Learners in Informal Learning Networks

    Learners increasingly use the Internet as source to find suitable information for their learning needs. This especially applies to informal learning that takes place during daily activities that are related to work and private life. Unfortunately, the Internet is overwhelming which makes it difficult to get an overview and to select the most suitable information. Navigation support may help to reduce time and costs involved selecting suitable information on the Internet. Promising technologies are recommender systems known from e-commerce systems like Amazon.com. They match customers with a similar taste of products and create a kind ‘neighborhood’ of likeminded customers. They look for related products purchased by the neighbors and recommend these to the current customer. In this thesis we explore the application of recommender systems to offer personalized navigation support to learners in informal Learning Networks. A model of a recommender system for informal Learning Networks is proposed that takes into account pedagogical characteristics and combines them with collaborative filtering algorithms. Which learning activities are most suitable depends on needs, preferences and goals of individual learners. Following this approach we have conducted two empirical studies. The results of these studies showed that the application of recommender systems for navigation support in informal Learning Networks is promising when supporting learners to select most suitable learning activities according to their individual needs, preferences and goals. Based on these results we introduce a technical prototype which allows us to offer navigation support to lifelong learners in informal Learning Networks

    A Software Product Line Approach to Ontology-based Recommendations in E-Tourism Systems

    This study tackles two concerns of developers of Tourism Information Systems (TIS). First is the need for more dependable recommendation services due to the intangible nature of the tourism product where it is impossible for customers to physically evaluate the services on offer prior to practical experience. Second is the need to manage dynamic user requirements in tourism due to the advent of new technologies such as the semantic web and mobile computing such that etourism systems (TIS) can evolve proactively with emerging user needs at minimal time and development cost without performance tradeoffs. However, TIS have very predictable characteristics and are functionally identical in most cases with minimal variations which make them attractive for software product line development. The Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) paradigm enables the strategic and systematic reuse of common core assets in the development of a family of software products that share some degree of commonality in order to realise a significant improvement in the cost and time of development. Hence, this thesis introduces a novel and systematic approach, called Product Line for Ontology-based Tourism Recommendation (PLONTOREC), a special approach focusing on the creation of variants of TIS products within a product line. PLONTOREC tackles the aforementioned problems in an engineering-like way by hybridizing concepts from ontology engineering and software product line engineering. The approach is a systematic process model consisting of product line management, ontology engineering, domain engineering, and application engineering. The unique feature of PLONTOREC is that it allows common TIS product requirements to be defined, commonalities and differences of content in TIS product variants to be planned and limited in advance using a conceptual model, and variant TIS products to be created according to a construction specification. We demonstrated the novelty in this approach using a case study of product line development of e-tourism systems for three countries in the West-African Region of Africa

    Practice-centred e-health system design for cross-boundary clinical decision support

    The idea of cross-boundary clinical decision support has the potential to transform the design of future work environments for e-health through a connected healthcare system that allows for harnessing of information and peer opinion across geographical boundaries for better decision-making. The trouble, however, is that the use of healthcare information in decision-making usually occurs within the context of a complex structure of clinical work practices that is often shaped by a wide range of factors, including organisational culture, local work contexts, socially constructed traditions of actions, experiences and patients’ circumstances. They vary across geographical boundaries, and have remained largely unaccounted for in the design of current e-health systems. As a result, achieving the visions of e-health, particularly in relation to cross-boundary clinical decision support, requires a rethinking of key clinical and organisational processes in a manner that accommodates work practice as a fundamental part of how clinicians work and make decisions in the real-world. This thesis investigates the concept of work practice as a design requirement for cross-boundary clinical decision support systems in e-health. It is argued that the task of enabling informed decision support across geographical boundaries in e-health can be enhanced through an understanding, and a formal characterisation, of work practices in various healthcare work contexts, and a specification of how practice can be used, managed and transformed to suit various clinical problem situations and patients’ needs. This research takes a clinical practice-centred approach to inform e-health system design, and draws on the concept of work practice and cultural-historical theory in social science as well as situation awareness in order to describe the local traditions of actions that guide clinicians’ work in the real world. It contributes a coherent conceptual architecture comprising a practice-centred awareness model for cross-boundary awareness, a frame-based technique, named PracticeFrame, for formalising and representing work practice for system design, and ContextMorph, for adaptively transforming a suggestion across work boundaries to suit a user’s local work context and practices. An in-depth user-informed requirements capture was used to gain an understanding of clinical work practices for designing e-health system for cross-boundary decision support. A proof of concept prototype, named CaDHealth, which is based on the Brahms work practice modelling tool and includes a work practice visualisation model, named the practice display, was developed and used to conduct user-based evaluation. The evaluation revealed that incorporating practice-centred awareness enhances usefulness, acceptance and user adoption of e-health systems for cross-boundary clinical decision support

    Softwaresysteme, die ihre Services an Charakteristika individueller Benutzer anpassen haben sich bereits als effektiver und/oder benutzerfreundlicher als statische Systeme in mehreren AnwendungsdomĂ€nen erwiesen. Um solche Anpassungsleistungen anbieten zu können, greifen benutzeradaptive Systeme auf Modelle von Benutzercharakteristika zurĂŒck. Der Aufbau und die Verwaltung dieser Modelle wird durch dezidierte Benutzermodellierungskomponenten vorgenommen. Ein wichtiger Zweig der Benutzermodellierungsforschung beschĂ€ftigt sich mit der Entwicklung sogenannter ?Benutzermodellierungs-Shells?, d.h. generischen Benutzermodellierungssystemen, die die Entwicklung anwendungsspezifischer Benutzermodellierungskomponenten erleichtern. Die Bestimmung des Leistungsumfangs dieser generischen Benutzermodellierungssysteme und deren Dienste bzw. FunktionalitĂ€ten wurde bisher in den meisten FĂ€llen intuitiv vorgenommen und/oder aus Beschreibungen weniger benutzeradaptiver Systeme in der Literatur abgeleitet. In der jĂŒngeren Vergangenheit fĂŒhrte der Trend zur Personalisierung im World Wide Web zur Entwicklung mehrerer kommerzieller Benutzermodellierungsserver. Die fĂŒr diese Systeme als wichtig erachteten Eigenschaften stehen im krassen Gegensatz zu denen, die bei der Entwicklung der Benutzermodellierungs-Shells im Vordergrund standen und umgekehrt. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist das Ziel dieser Dissertation (i) Anforderungen an Benutzermodellierungsserver aus einer multi-disziplinĂ€ren wissenschaftlichen und einer einsatzorientierten (kommerziellen) Perspektive zu analysieren, (ii) einen Server zu entwerfen und zu implementieren, der diesen Anforderungen genĂŒgt, und (iii) die Performanz und Skalierbarkeit dieses Servers unter der Arbeitslast kleinerer und mittlerer Einsatzumgebungen gegen die diesbezĂŒglichen Anforderungen zu ĂŒberprĂŒfen. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, verfolgen wir einen anforderungszentrierten Ansatz, der auf Erfahrungen aus verschiedenen Forschungsbereichen aufbaut. Wir entwickeln eine generische Architektur fĂŒr einen Benutzermodellierungsserver, die aus einem Serverkern fĂŒr das Datenmanagement und modular hinzufĂŒgbaren Benutzermodellierungskomponenten besteht, von denen jede eine wichtige Benutzermodellierungstechnik implementiert. Wir zeigen, dass wir durch die Integration dieser Benutzermodellierungskomponenten in einem Server Synergieeffekte zwischen den eingesetzten Lerntechniken erzielen und bekannte Defizite einzelner Verfahren kompensieren können, beispielsweise bezĂŒglich Performanz, Skalierbarkeit, Integration von DomĂ€nenwissen, Datenmangel und Kaltstart. Abschließend prĂ€sentieren wir die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Experimente, die wir durchgefĂŒhrt haben um empirisch nachzuweisen, dass der von uns entwickelte Benutzermodellierungsserver zentralen Performanz- und Skalierbarkeitskriterien genĂŒgt. Wir zeigen, dass unser Benutzermodellierungsserver die vorbesagten Kriterien in Anwendungsumgebungen mit kleiner und mittlerer Arbeitslast in vollem Umfang erfĂŒllt. Ein Test in einer Anwendungsumgebung mit mehreren Millionen Benutzerprofilen und einer Arbeitslast, die als reprĂ€sentativ fĂŒr grĂ¶ĂŸere Web Sites angesehen werden kann bestĂ€tigte, dass die Performanz der Benutzermodellierung unseres Servers keine signifikante Mehrbelastung fĂŒr eine personalisierte Web Site darstellt. Gleichzeitig können die Anforderungen an die verfĂŒgbare Hardware als moderat eingestuft werden

    Fuzzy concept analysis for semantic knowledge extraction

    2010 - 2011Availability of controlled vocabularies, ontologies, and so on is enabling feature to provide some added values in terms of knowledge management. Nevertheless, the design, maintenance and construction of domain ontologies are a human intensive and time consuming task. The Knowledge Extraction consists of automatic techniques aimed to identify and to define relevant concepts and relations of the domain of interest by analyzing structured (relational databases, XML) and unstructured (text, documents, images) sources. Specifically, methodology for knowledge extraction defined in this research work is aimed at enabling automatic ontology/taxonomy construction from existing resources in order to obtain useful information. For instance, the experimental results take into account data produced with Web 2.0 tools (e.g., RSS-Feed, Enterprise Wiki, Corporate Blog, etc.), text documents, and so on. Final results of Knowledge Extraction methodology are taxonomies or ontologies represented in a machine oriented manner by means of semantic web technologies, such as: RDFS, OWL and SKOS. The resulting knowledge models have been applied to different goals. On the one hand, the methodology has been applied in order to extract ontologies and taxonomies and to semantically annotate text. On the other hand, the resulting ontologies and taxonomies are exploited in order to enhance information retrieval performance and to categorize incoming data and to provide an easy way to find interesting resources (such as faceted browsing). Specifically, following objectives have been addressed in this research work: Ontology/Taxonomy Extraction: that concerns to automatic extraction of hierarchical conceptualizations (i.e., taxonomies) and relations expressed by means typical description logic constructs (i.e., ontologies). Information Retrieval: definition of a technique to perform concept-based the retrieval of information according to the user queries. Faceted Browsing: in order to automatically provide faceted browsing capabilities according to the categorization of the extracted contents. Semantic Annotation: definition of a text analysis process, aimed to automatically annotate subjects and predicates identified. The experimental results have been obtained in some application domains: e-learning, enterprise human resource management, clinical decision support system. Future challenges go in the following directions: investigate approaches to support ontology alignment and merging applied to knowledge management.X n.s
