Al-Adab: Islamic Sex Education Courseware Using Cognitive Theory

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to propose a prototype conceptual model for Islamic Sex Education (ISE) in multimedia technology learning, the design and the development of the ISE courseware to be based on cognitive theories.Problems encountered during preliminary investigations show that sex education is a ‘taboo’ and a sensitive issue at every level of the society. However, sex education is important for Muslim parents to educate their children as well as, to provide some guidelines in dealing with sexual deviances and free sex problems. The methodology used in this study, is a combination of the research design proposed by Vaishnavi and Kuechler in 2008 and the Instructional Systems Design. Besides that, the Multimedia Development Processes was alsoused in the initial stages of the research.By employing the prominent elements, a conceptual model of the ISE was developed. It involved three prominent design guidelines, namely; interaction design, information design and presentation design. These guidelines helped develop the ISE courseware. The ISE conceptual model and its courseware prototype are the major contributions of this study, as shown in the two types of evaluation conducted. The learning evaluation revealed that the ISE courseware prototype significantly increased the parents’ knowledge of the said education as measured before and after the use of the prototype, while the reaction evaluation proved that the ISE prototype has the ability to encourage ISE learning among the users. In conclusion,a well-designed and developed ISE courseware is able to improve the users’ knowledge and awareness of such an important subject matter. However, certain limitations do remain, such as the number of respondents involved in this study. Hopefully it can be increased in the future

This study proposes a conceptual model of Islamic Sex Education (ISE) and an ISE courseware based on the model; named Al-Adab, in conveying rightful sex education information to the parents, particularly Muslims.By the end of the study two evaluations were conducted namely; learning evaluation and reaction evaluation to investigate the effectiveness of the prototype as well as the constructed model with 41 respondents, which are parents.Employing the pre and post test, learning evaluation that includes 15 similar questions about ISE was given before and after the respondents used the courseware prototype. Meanwhile, the reaction evaluation was given after the respondents used the courseware prototype in assessing the overall effectiveness of the prototype. After analyzing the data, we found that the correct answers of the learning evaluation were increased after the respondents used the prototype; and overall they agreed the effectiveness of the prototype in increasing their knowledge

Evaluations of the Islamic Sex Education (ISE) courseware prototype for parents based on cognitive theory

This study developed Islamic Sex Education (ISE) interactive courseware to help users particularly parents discover guidelines in guiding them for sex education in Islam. In fact, sex education in Islam provides guidelines in manners related to what is allowed and forbidden, and stresses the faith towards the religion.Islam believes that parents play the main role to educate their children about this matter. However, the deficiency of this ‘taboo’ learning material in conveying the information makes the situation more stressful. In consequence, this study proposed the courseware as an attempt to the problem. We have conducted two evaluations namely; learning and reaction evaluation towards the effectiveness of the prototype with 41 respondents, which are parents.Employing the pre and post test, learning evaluation that includes 15 similar questions about ISE was given before and after the respondents used the courseware prototype.

The motivational design and development of interactive multimedia learning courseware for Islamic sex education (ISE) — A parental guide

The problems related to free sex and sexual deviance increase every year, and ironically, Muslims, and teenagers are the most involved. Various measures have been taken to solve these problems. However, none of them have been proven to be effective. The baby dumping and abortion cases tragically increase by years. As an Islamic country, it is wise to refer to the religious approach for solutions.Sex education in Islam provides guidelines in manners related to what is allowed and forbidden, and stresses the faith towards the religion.Islam believes that parents play the main role to educate their children about this matter.Even so, the parents seem to be unaware on the importance of this form of education. Furthermore, the deficiency of this `taboo' learning material in conveying the information makes the situation more stressful. Thus, the objective of this study is to propose an Islamic Sex Education (ISE) interactive courseware. It also attempts to change the parents' motivational level in encouraging the awareness towards Islamic sex education. This paper covers the motivational design and development of the ISE interactive courseware.Besides that, it also includes the literature review of the study and the methodology involved. In conclusion, the effort in designing and developing this courseware can hopefully be a parental guide to sex education, as well as a solution in reducing free sex and sexual deviance problems in Malaysia

The study of augmented reality technique in science learning motivation (eSTAR)

The purpose of this study is to propose an Enhanced Science Textbook using Augmented Reality (eSTAR) prototype as a supplementary science learning material for Form II students. The Ministry of Education of Malaysia has established a 60:40 policy whereby it targets 60 percent of the students for science stream while 40 percent for arts. However, statistics indicate that there is a downward trend in the enrolment of students in science for the past few decades. The ratio of science to arts students in the 80’s was 31:69, then declined to 22:78 in the 90’s and remained at 29:71 in 2012. From the preliminary study, it was found that students have the interest in science; however, they are less motivated to continually pursue their higher education and careers related to science. Thus, this study proposes the eSTAR prototype which incorporates Augmented Reality (AR) and Multimedia (MM) technologies based on eSTAR conceptual model. The methodology utilized in this study is adapted from the Design Science Research Methodology. The prototype incorporates the ARCS Model of Motivation, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Intrinsic Motivation Theory and Multimedia Principles. This prototype was evaluated among 140 samples of Form II students using experimental design and questionnaire. The results of the evaluation show that engaging, enjoyment and fun are significantly related to motivation. The learning performance study indicates that through the use of the eSTAR prototype, students are able to perform better compared to the conventional learning method. The eSTAR conceptual model and its prototype are the most important contributions of this study. This study proves that the use of AR in science learning is able to motivate students to perform better in science. The output from this study may assist the Ministry of Education to achieve the 60:40 policy as Malaysia moves towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020

Rural tourism hasbeen shown to benefit local communities from the economic perspective. Digitalmarketing allows marketing information to be transmitted directly to potentialvisitors without the need for an intermediary, in a low-cost but effective way.Rural tourism destinations in Sarawak now have an opportunity to benefit from the Sarawak state government’sinitiative, the Digital Sarawak Centre of Excellence, in terms of digitalcontent creation and website maintenance. However, the current level of adoption is zero to minimal in ruraltourism destinations. This study examines the barriers towards digital marketingadoption from the perspective of rural tourism providers. Fieldwork was performed at two sites,Ba’kelalan and Long Lamai, in July 2016 and February 2017 respectively. A total of 19 respondents were interviewedin-depth. The study revealed thattourism providers currently depended on word-of-mouth or direct contact forbookings, but were willing to adopt digital marketing with the assistance ofknowledgeable parties. However, certainphysical, logistical and social constraints may have a detrimental effect onthe community’s readiness level to entertain tourists on a larger scale and mayfurther impede the overall progress of digital marketing adoption, at both theindividual and destination levels
