V2X Meets NOMA: Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for 5G Enabled Vehicular Networks
Benefited from the widely deployed infrastructure, the LTE network has
recently been considered as a promising candidate to support the
vehicle-to-everything (V2X) services. However, with a massive number of devices
accessing the V2X network in the future, the conventional OFDM-based LTE
network faces the congestion issues due to its low efficiency of orthogonal
access, resulting in significant access delay and posing a great challenge
especially to safety-critical applications. The non-orthogonal multiple access
(NOMA) technique has been well recognized as an effective solution for the
future 5G cellular networks to provide broadband communications and massive
connectivity. In this article, we investigate the applicability of NOMA in
supporting cellular V2X services to achieve low latency and high reliability.
Starting with a basic V2X unicast system, a novel NOMA-based scheme is proposed
to tackle the technical hurdles in designing high spectral efficient scheduling
and resource allocation schemes in the ultra dense topology. We then extend it
to a more general V2X broadcasting system. Other NOMA-based extended V2X
applications and some open issues are also discussed.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Wireless Communications Magazin
Multi-Cell, Multi-Channel Scheduling with Probabilistic Per-Packet Real-Time Guarantee
For mission-critical sensing and control applications such as those to be
enabled by 5G Ultra-Reliable, Low-Latency Communications (URLLC), it is
critical to ensure the communication quality of individual packets.
Prior studies have considered Probabilistic Per-packet Real-time
Communications (PPRC) guarantees for single-cell, single-channel networks with
implicit deadline constraints, but they have not considered real-world
complexities such as inter-cell interference and multiple communication
channels.
Towards ensuring PPRC in multi-cell, multi-channel wireless networks, we
propose a real-time scheduling algorithm based on
\emph{local-deadline-partition (LDP)}. The LDP algorithm is suitable for
distributed implementation, and it ensures probabilistic per-packet real-time
guarantee for multi-cell, multi-channel networks with general deadline
constraints. We also address the associated challenge of the schedulability
test of PPRC traffic. In particular, we propose the concept of \emph{feasible
set} and identify a closed-form sufficient condition for the schedulability of
PPRC traffic.
We propose a distributed algorithm for the schedulability test, and the
algorithm includes a procedure for finding the minimum sum work density of
feasible sets which is of interest by itself. We also identify a necessary
condition for the schedulability of PPRC traffic, and use numerical studies to
understand a lower bound on the approximation ratio of the LDP algorithm.
We experimentally study the properties of the LDP algorithm and observe that
the PPRC traffic supportable by the LDP algorithm is significantly higher than
that of a state-of-the-art algorithm

Fifth generation cellular networks aim to provide new types of services. Prominent amongst these are industrial automation and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Such new use cases demand lower latencies and higher reliability along with greater flexibility than current and past generations of cellular technologies allow. Enabling these new service types requires the introduction of device-to-device communications (D2D). This work investigated network-controlled D2D schemes wherein cellular base stations retain control over spectrum usage. D2D nodes assemble into clusters. Each D2D cluster then organises itself as it sees fit within the constraints imposed by the cellular network. A review of proposed D2D control schemes was conducted to identify pertinent interference issues. Measurements were then devised to empirically collect quantitative data on the impact of this interference.
Measurements were conducted using a software-defined radio (SDR) platform. An SDR based system was selected to enable a low cost and highly flexible iterative approach to development while still providing the accuracy of real-world measurement. D2D functionality was added to the chosen SDR system with the essential parts of Long Term Evolution Release 8 implemented. Two series of measurements were performed. The first aimed to determine the adjacent channel interference impact of a cellular user being located near a D2D receiver. The second measurement series collected data on the co-channel interference of spectrum re-use between a D2D link and a moving cellular transmitter. Based on these measurements it was determined that D2D communications within a cellular system is feasible. Furthermore, the required frequency of channel state information reporting as a function of node velocity was determined. D2D). Tässä diplomityössä keskityttiin tutkimaan verkkohallinteisia D2D-rakenteita, joissa solukkoverkko hallinnoi spektrin käyttöä. D2D-päätteet liittyvät yhteen muodostaakseen klustereita, jotka hallinnoivat sisäistä tietoliikennettään parhaaksi katsomallaan tavalla solukkoverkon asettamien rajoitusten puitteissa.
Kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla selvitettiin aiemmissa tutkimuksissa esitetyille D2D-ratkaisuille yhteiset interferenssiongelmat. Näiden vaikutusta ja suuruutta tutkittiin mittausten avulla. Mittaukset toteutettiin ohjelmistoradioalustan (engl. SDR) avulla. SDR-pohjaisen järjestelmän käyttö mahdollisti edullisen ja joustavan tavan kerätä empiirisiä mittaustuloksia. D2D-toiminnallisuus lisättiin Long Term Evolution Release 8:n olennaiset ominaisuudet omaavaan alustaan. Tällä alustalla toteutettiin kaksi mittaussarjaa. Ensimmäisellä kerättiin tuloksia viereisellä kanavalla toimivan matkapuhelimen D2D-vastaanottimelle aiheuttamasta interferenssistä näiden ollessa toistensa läheisyydessä. Toisella mittaussarjalla selvitettiin samalla kanavalla toimivan D2D-yhteyden ja liikkuvan matkapuhelimen välistä interferenssiä. Mittausten perusteella todettiin D2D-toiminnallisuuden lisäämisen solukkoverkkoon olevan mahdollista. Lisäksi laskettiin vaadittava kanavalaadun päivitystiheys päätteiden nopeuden funktiona
Fine-grained performance analysis of massive MTC networks with scheduling and data aggregation
Abstract. The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a substantial shift within wireless communication and constitutes a relevant topic of social, economic, and overall technical impact. It refers to resource-constrained devices communicating without or with low human intervention. However, communication among machines imposes several challenges compared to traditional human type communication (HTC). Moreover, as the number of devices increases exponentially, different network management techniques and technologies are needed. Data aggregation is an efficient approach to handle the congestion introduced by a massive number of machine type devices (MTDs). The aggregators not only collect data but also implement scheduling mechanisms to cope with scarce network resources.
This thesis provides an overview of the most common IoT applications and the network technologies to support them. We describe the most important challenges in machine type communication (MTC). We use a stochastic geometry (SG) tool known as the meta distribution (MD) of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), which is the distribution of the conditional SIR distribution given the wireless nodes’ locations, to provide a fine-grained description of the per-link reliability. Specifically, we analyze the performance of two scheduling methods for data aggregation of MTC: random resource scheduling (RRS) and channel-aware resource scheduling (CRS). The results show the fraction of users in the network that achieves a target reliability, which is an important aspect to consider when designing wireless systems with stringent service requirements. Finally, the impact on the fraction of MTDs that communicate with a target reliability when increasing the aggregators density is investigated
Enabling Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications through Unlicensed Spectrum
© 2018 IEEE. In this article, we aim to address the question of how to exploit the unlicensed spectrum to achieve URLLC. Potential URLLC PHY mechanisms are reviewed and then compared via simulations to demonstrate their potential benefits to URLLC. Although a number of important PHY techniques help with URLLC, the PHY layer exhibits an intrinsic trade-off between latency and reliability, posed by limited and unstable wireless channels. We then explore MAC mechanisms and discuss multi-channel strategies for achieving low-latency LTE unlicensed band access. We demonstrate, via simulations, that the periods without access to the unlicensed band can be substantially reduced by maintaining channel access processes on multiple unlicensed channels, choosing the channels intelligently, and implementing RTS/CTS

A survey of 5G technologies: regulatory, standardization and industrial perspectives
In recent years, there have been significant developments in the research on 5th Generation (5G) networks. Several enabling technologies are being explored for the 5G mobile system era. The aim is to evolve a cellular network that is intrinsically flexible and remarkably pushes forward the limits of legacy mobile systems across all dimensions of performance metrics. All the stakeholders, such as regulatory bodies, standardization authorities, industrial fora, mobile operators and vendors, must work in unison to bring 5G to fruition. In this paper, we aggregate the 5G-related information coming from the various stakeholders, in order to i) have a comprehensive overview of 5G and ii) to provide a survey of the envisioned 5G technologies; their development thus far from the perspective of those stakeholders will open up new frontiers of services and applications for next-generation wireless networks. Device-to-device communications for 5G Radio Access Networks
Nowadays it is very popular to share video clips and images to one’s social network in the proximity. Direct device-to-device (D2D) communication is one of the means to respond to this requirement. D2D offers users improved end-to-end latency times, and additionally can provide higher data rates. At the same time the overall cellular network congestion decreases. D2D is also known as Proximity Services (ProSe).
LTE is missing direct D2D communication. Currently D2D for 5G is standardised in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Releases 12, and in parallel Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society (METIS) project has D2D as one of its research topics. Multiple articles have been published about D2D communication.
This thesis is a literature based thesis following D2D communication in 5G literature. The scope is to describe similarities and differences found in Technical Reports and Technical Specifications of the 3GPP Release 12, in deliverables written in METIS project and in some selected D2D related publications about D2D communications.
3GPP Release 12 concentrates on ProSe at least for public safety. ProSe communication out-of-coverage is only for public safety purposes. METIS provides multiple solutions for diverse D2D topics, for example, device discovery, radio resource management, mobility management and relaying. METIS provides solutions for D2D communication not yet mature enough for development and implementation but which might be realized in the future.Nykyisin on suosittua lähettää lyhyitä videoita tai kuvia läheisyydessä oleville ystäville. Laitteiden välinen suora kommunikointi eli D2D-viestintä tuo ratkaisun tähän vaatimukseen. D2D-viestinnän ansiosta viive lyhenee ja lisäksi siirtonopeudet kasvavat. Samaan aikaan koko verkon kuormitus vähenee.
Suora kahden laitteen välinen kommunikointi puuttuu LTE:stä. Tällä hetkellä 3GPP Release 12 standardisoi suoraa kahden laitteen välistä kommunikointia. Samanaikaisesti Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society (METIS) –projektin yhtenä tutkimuskohteenaan on kahden laitteen välinen suora kommunikointi, Lisäksi on lukuisia julkaisuja liittyen D2D-viestintään.
