The Changing Roles of Innovation Actors and Organizational Antecedents in the Digital Age
Despite being acknowledged for playing a pivotal role in facilitating innovations in the digital age, there is a lack of research on the multifaceted role of digital innovation actors. This paper provides a systematic, multi-disciplinary literature review on innovation actors in a digital and non-digital context. Based on a search of 149 high-quality journals and conference proceedings, we identified 110 articles as relevant and categorized as well as synthesized the knowledge on innovation actorsâ role and organizational antecedents in a digital and non-digital context. We find an increasing focus on innovation actorsâ role in user communities in a digital context. Moreover, literature on organizational antecedents puts a stronger emphasis on allocating resources to innovation actors outside the organization. By analyzing extant research we provide a comprehensive summary on current knowledge and outline opportunities for future research on digital innovation actors
Enabling Innovation Champions in Organizations - Results of a Systematic Literature Analysis
Based on a systematic literature analysis, this paper takes stock of the current landscape of research on innovation champions from an individual and organizational perspective: 149 journals and conference proceedings were examined on the topic of innovation champions. 85 articles were identified as relevant and systematically categorized according to two perspectives by synthesizing enablers of innovation champions on the individual (e.g. skills) and organizational level (e.g. knowledge management). While our analysis illuminates a high variety of enablers that influence innovation champions, the descriptive findings show a stronger focus of innovation champion studies on individual level enablers. Our literature review points out the lack of research on negative individual characteristics (e.g. narcissism), on the innovation champion in the IS context and on formalized groups of innovation champions (e.g. organizational units)
Framing Research Questions Intersecting Information Systems and Health: A New Research Perspective at Micro- and Macro-Level
Digital health is an established research area in information systems (IS) research. The domain involves individual human behavior, the broader social, healthcare providers, and other organizations. The rapid spread and use of health technologies have opened up considerable opportunities for research to evaluate and test existing theories. To generate an overview of the status quo, we apply the believe-action-outcome (BAO) framework as a lens to understand how current research has addressed the various aspects of digital health. Overall, we analyzed 46 studies from well-regarded IS outlets. Therefore, we aim at providing a comprehensive review and synthesis of the literature. Our results indicate a focus on behavioral research and action formation, but also a void regarding design-oriented studies, as well as multi-level studies. In summary, this study develops a research agenda for digital health, which includes six research questions that address research focus, health phenomena, at the macro- and micro-level
When are employees idea champions? When they achieve progress at, find meaning in, and identify with work
Purpose: Drawing from conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study investigates the relationship between employees' perceived career progress and their championing behavior and particularly how this relationship might be invigorated by two critical personal resources at the job (work meaningfulness) and employer (organizational identification) levels. Design/methodology/approach: Quantitative data were collected from a survey administered to 245 employees in an organization that operates in the oil industry. Findings: Beliefs about organizational support for career development are more likely to stimulate idea championing when employees find their job activities meaningful and strongly identify with the successes and failures of their employing organization. Practical implications: This study offers organizations deeper insights into the personal circumstances in which positive career-related energy is more likely to be directed toward the active mobilization of support for novel ideas. Proactive champions: How personal and organizational resources enable proactive personalities to become idea champions
In investigating the relationship between employeesâ proactive personality and idea championing, this study addresses how this relationship might be augmented when employees can draw from pertinent personal resources (persuasion self-efficacy and job enthusiasm) and organizational resources (social interaction and organizational support for change). Two-wave survey data, collected among employees in a banking organization, show that employeesâ proactive personalities increase the likelihood that they mobilize support for innovative ideas, especially if they (1) feel confident that they can defend these ideas successfully, (2) experience their jobs as sources of personal fulfillment, (3) maintain informal relationships with peers, and (4) believe their organizations embrace change. For managers, these findings indicate that employees will leverage their positive energy, derived from their desire for initiative taking, into enhanced change-oriented championing activities if they also can draw from pertinent resources that enhance their ability or motivation to engage in those leveraging efforts.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Champions of IS Innovations
Researchers have studied champions in diverse settings and kinds of initiatives; a significant body of work on champions has also steadily grown in the information systems discipline. However, we still lack clarity about the distinctiveness of IS champions. Given the poor track record of IS project success and championsâ importance to that success, we argue that this lack of conceptual clarity about the uniqueness of IS champions constitutes a significant and urgent gap. In part, this gap exists because researchers have inadequately consolidated knowledge about IS champions thus far. In response, we systematically reviewed the literature and approached this gap from two viewpoints: 1) a research process perspective whereby we investigated the approaches and practices that IS champion research has followed and 2) a thematic perspective whereby we examined how knowledge about IS champions has accumulated to date. Our findings culminate in three contributions: we 1) propose eight IS champion distinctive features using a classification scheme, 2) redefine IS champions in a way that better reflects the distinctiveness of the champion role in IS innovation, and 3) combine findings from process and thematic perspectives in an agenda to advance IS champion research
Step By Step Project Evaluation Report
The Step-by-Step Project (SBS) was co-designed to address a common need identified by partners from four European Countries. Men are at greater risk of poor physical and mental health because of social isolation, loneliness and unemployment. SBS delivered a model of community engagement to empower men to move from poor health and/or isolation to healthy social participation or active engagement in the labour market. To achieve this, the SBS Model adapted the Menâs Sheds concept by developing a new, third-generation Menâs Sheds Delivery Model. This incorporated peer champion (health and employment focused) training and deployment within the Sheds and their communities, outreach with their communities and other organisations, and use of health technology for assessment of health status. Information videos have been created, explaining the SBS Model in English, French, and Dutch.
The evaluation adopts a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative evidence gathered), multi-discipline (physical, social, psychological and economic indicators of change) multi-level (evidence gathered from Shedders, Leaders, Trainers, Partners) approach. The objective is to provide evidence of âwhoâ the SBS Project has engaged with (reach), âwhatâ changes have occurred (effectiveness), document âwhereâ diversity in SBS Shed delivery is observed (adoption), âhowâ change was achieved (implementation) and âifâ change is likely to lead to long-term economic benefit (maintenance). This approach is based on the RE-AIM evaluation framework (Glasgow, 1999, 2019).
Between September 2017 and November 2021, 101 Sheds were established with a total membership of approximately 2000 individuals from Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Data collection for this evaluation started in May 2019 and ran until November 2021, and involved approximately 450 Shedders (Leaders, Champions and Members), 7 Champion trainers and 15 Project Partners. Economically, the SBS Model facilitated reduced expenditure on mental and physical healthcare, less public spending on welfare transfer payments and other support agencies, and up-skilling and greater self-esteem on reducing unemployment and enhanced productivity in the workplace
