    Image and interpretation using artificial intelligence to read ancient Roman texts

    The ink and stylus tablets discovered at the Roman Fort of Vindolanda are a unique resource for scholars of ancient history. However, the stylus tablets have proved particularly difficult to read. This paper describes a system that assists expert papyrologists in the interpretation of the Vindolanda writing tablets. A model-based approach is taken that relies on models of the written form of characters, and statistical modelling of language, to produce plausible interpretations of the documents. Fusion of the contributions from the language, character, and image feature models is achieved by utilizing the GRAVA agent architecture that uses Minimum Description Length as the basis for information fusion across semantic levels. A system is developed that reads in image data and outputs plausible interpretations of the Vindolanda tablets

    Three dimensional pattern recognition using feature-based indexing and rule-based search

    In flexible automated manufacturing, robots can perform routine operations as well as recover from atypical events, provided that process-relevant information is available to the robot controller. Real time vision is among the most versatile sensing tools, yet the reliability of machine-based scene interpretation can be questionable. The effort described here is focused on the development of machine-based vision methods to support autonomous nuclear fuel manufacturing operations in hot cells; This thesis presents a method to efficiently recognize 3D objects from 2D images based on feature-based indexing. Object recognition is the identification of correspondences between parts of a current scene and stored views of known objects, using chains of segments or indexing vectors. To create indexed object models, characteristic model image features are extracted during preprocessing. Feature vectors representing model object contours are acquired from several points of view around each object and stored. Recognition is the process of matching stored views with features or patterns detected in a test scene; Two sets of algorithms were developed, one for preprocessing and indexed database creation, and one for pattern searching and matching during recognition. At recognition time, those indexing vectors with the highest match probability are retrieved from the model image database, using a nearest neighbor search algorithm. The nearest neighbor search predicts the best possible match candidates. Extended searches are guided by a search strategy that employs knowledge-base (KB) selection criteria. The knowledge-based system simplifies the recognition process and minimizes the number of iterations and memory usage; Novel contributions include the use of a feature-based indexing data structure together with a knowledge base. Both components improve the efficiency of the recognition process by improved structuring of the database of object features and reducing data base size. This data base organization according to object features facilitates machine learning in the context of a knowledge-base driven recognition algorithm. Lastly, feature-based indexing permits the recognition of 3D objects based on a comparatively small number of stored views, further limiting the size of the feature database; Experiments with real images as well as synthetic images including occluded (partially visible) objects are presented. The experiments show almost perfect recognition with feature-based indexing, if the detected features in the test scene are viewed from the same angle as the view on which the model is based. The experiments also show that the knowledge base is a highly effective and efficient search tool recognition performance is improved without increasing the database size requirements. The experimental results indicate that feature-based indexing in combination with a knowledge-based system will be a useful methodology for automatic target recognition (ATR)

    Laminar Cortical Dynamics of Visual Form and Motion Interactions During Coherent Object Motion Perception

    How do visual form and motion processes cooperate to compute object motion when each process separately is insufficient? A 3D FORMOTION model specifies how 3D boundary representations, which separate figures from backgrounds within cortical area V2, capture motion signals at the appropriate depths in MT; how motion signals in MT disambiguate boundaries in V2 via MT-to-Vl-to-V2 feedback; how sparse feature tracking signals are amplified; and how a spatially anisotropic motion grouping process propagates across perceptual space via MT-MST feedback to integrate feature-tracking and ambiguous motion signals to determine a global object motion percept.     Grouping Uncertain Oriented Projective Geometric Entities with Application to Automatic Building Reconstruction

    The fully automatic reconstruction of 3d scenes from a set of 2d images has always been a key issue in photogrammetry and computer vision and has not been solved satisfactory so far. Most of the current approaches match features between the images based on radiometric cues followed by a reconstruction using the image geometry. The motivation for this work is the conjecture that in the presence of highly redundant data it should be possible to recover the scene structure by grouping together geometric primitives in a bottom-up manner. Oriented projective geometry will be used throughout this work, which allows to represent geometric primitives, such as points, lines and planes in 2d and 3d space as well as projective cameras, together with their uncertainty. The first major contribution of the work is the use of uncertain oriented projective geometry, rather than uncertain projective geometry, that enables the representation of more complex compound entities, such as line segments and polygons in 2d and 3d space as well as 2d edgels and 3d facets. Within the uncertain oriented projective framework a procedure is developed, which allows to test pairwise relations between the various uncertain oriented projective entities. Again, the novelty lies in the possibility to check relations between the novel compound entities. The second major contribution of the work is the development of a data structure, specifically designed to enable performing the tests between large numbers of entities in an efficient manner. Being able to efficiently test relations between the geometric entities, a framework for grouping those entities together is developed. Various different grouping methods are discussed. The third major contribution of this work is the development of a novel grouping method that by analyzing the entropy change incurred by incrementally adding observations into an estimation is able to balance efficiency against robustness in order to achieve better grouping results. Finally the applicability of the proposed representations, tests and grouping methods for the task of purely geometry based building reconstruction from oriented aerial images is demonstrated. lt will be shown that in the presence of highly redundant datasets it is possible to achieve reasonable reconstruction results by grouping together geometric primitives.Gruppierung unsicherer orientierter projektiver geometrischer Elemente mit Anwendung in der automatischen GebĂ€uderekonstruktion Die vollautomatische Rekonstruktion von 3D Szenen aus einer Menge von 2D Bildern war immer ein Hauptanliegen in der Photogrammetrie und Computer Vision und wurde bisher noch nicht zufriedenstellend gelöst. Verschiedene Gruppierungsmethoden werden vorgestellt. Der dritte Hauptbeitrag dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung einer neuen Gruppierungsmethode, die durch die Analyse der Änderung der Entropie beim HinzufĂŒgen von Beobachtungen in die SchĂ€tzung Effizienz und Robustheit gegeneinander ausbalanciert und dadurch bessere Gruppierungsergebnisse erzielt. Zum Schluss wird die Anwendbarkeit der vorgeschlagenen ReprĂ€sentationen, Tests und Gruppierungsmethoden fĂŒr die ausschließlich geometriebasierte GebĂ€uderekonstruktion aus orientierten Luftbildern demonstriert.     Temporal Dynamics of Decision-Making during Motion Perception in the Visual Cortex

    How does the brain make decisions? Speed and accuracy of perceptual decisions covary with certainty in the input, and correlate with the rate of evidence accumulation in parietal and frontal cortical "decision neurons." A biophysically realistic model of interactions within and between Retina/LGN and cortical areas V1, MT, MST, and LIP, gated by basal ganglia, simulates dynamic properties of decision-making in response to ambiguous visual motion stimuli used by Newsome, Shadlen, and colleagues in their neurophysiological experiments. The model clarifies how brain circuits that solve the aperture problem interact with a recurrent competitive network with self-normalizing choice properties to carry out probablistic decisions in real time. Some scientists claim that perception and decision-making can be described using Bayesian inference or related general statistical ideas, that estimate the optimal interpretation of the stimulus given priors and likelihoods. However, such concepts do not propose the neocortical mechanisms that enable perception, and make decisions. The present model explains behavioral and neurophysiological decision-making data without an appeal to Bayesian concepts and, unlike other existing models of these data, generates perceptual representations and choice dynamics in response to the experimental visual stimuli. Quantitative model simulations include the time course of LIP neuronal dynamics, as well as behavioral accuracy and reaction time properties, during both correct and error trials at different levels of input ambiguity in both fixed duration and reaction time tasks.
