IBM PC/IX operating system evaluation plan
An evaluation plan for the IBM PC/IX Operating System designed for IBM PC/XT computers is discussed. The evaluation plan covers the areas of performance measurement and evaluation, software facilities available, man-machine interface considerations, networking, and the suitability of PC/IX as a development environment within the University of Southwestern Louisiana NASA PC Research and Development project. In order to compare and evaluate the PC/IX system, comparisons with other available UNIX-based systems are also included
Control System for the LEDA 6.7-MeV Proton Beam Halo Experiment
Measurement of high-power proton beam-halo formation is the ongoing
scientific experiment for the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA)
facility. To attain this measurement goal, a 52-magnet beam line containing
several types of beam diagnostic instrumentation is being installed. The
Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) and commercial
software applications are presently being integrated to provide a real-time,
synchronous data acquisition and control system. This system is comprised of
magnet control, vacuum control, motor control, data acquisition, and data
analysis. Unique requirements led to the development and integration of
customized software and hardware. EPICS real-time databases, Interactive Data
Language (IDL) programs, LabVIEW Virtual Instruments (VI), and State Notation
Language (SNL) sequences are hosted on VXI, PC, and UNIX-based platforms which
interact using the EPICS Channel Access (CA) communication protocol.
Acquisition and control hardware technology ranges from DSP-based diagnostic
instrumentation to the PLC-controlled vacuum system. This paper describes the

Experiments towards model-based testing using Plan 9: Labelled transition file systems, stacking file systems, on-the-fly coverage measuring
We report on experiments that we did on Plan 9/Inferno to gain more experience with the file-system-as-tool-interface approach. We reimplemented functionality that we earlier worked on in Unix, trying to use Plan 9 file system interfaces. The application domain for those experiments was model-based testing.\ud

The idea we wanted to experiment with consists of building small, reusable pieces of functionality which are then composed to achieve the intended functionality. In particular we want to experiment with the idea of 'stacking' file servers (fs) on top of each other, where the upper fs acts as a 'filter' on the data and structure provided by the lower fs.\ud

For this experiment we designed a file system interface (ltsfs) that gives fine-grained access to a labelled transition system, and made two implementations of it.\ud
We developed a small fs that, when 'stacked' on top of the ltsfs, extends it with additional files, and an application that uses the resulting file system.\ud

The hope was that an interface like the one offered by ltsfs could be used as a general interface between (specification language specific) programs that give access to state spaces and (specification language independent) programs that use (walk) those state spaces like simulators, model checkers, or test derivation programs.\ud

Initial results (obtained on a less-than-modern machine) suggest that, although the approach by itself is definitely feasible in principle, in practice the fine-grained access offered by ltsfs may involve many file (9p) transactions which may seriously affect performance. In Unix we used a more conservative approach where the access was less fine-grained which likely explains why there we did not suffer from this problem.\ud

In addition we report on experiments to use acid to obtain coverage information that is updated on-the-fly while the program is running. This worked quite well. The main observation from those experiments is that the basic block notion of this approach, which has a more 'semantical' nature, differs from the more 'syntactical' nature of the basic block notion in Unix coverage measurement tools\ud

Stretching Method-Based Operational Modal Analysis of An Old Masonry Lighthouse.
We present in this paper a structural health monitoring study of the Egyptian lighthouse of Rethymnon in Crete, Greece. Using structural vibration data collected on a limited number of sensors during a 3-month period, we illustrate the potential of the stretching method for monitoring variations in the natural frequencies of the structure. The stretching method compares two signals, the current that refers to the actual state of the structure, with the reference one that characterizes the structure at a reference healthy condition. For the structure under study, an 8-day time interval is used for the reference quantity while the current quantity is computed using a time window of 24 h. Our results indicate that frequency shifts of 1% can be detected with high accuracy allowing for early damage assessment. We also provide a simple numerical model that is calibrated to match the natural frequencies estimated using the stretching method. The model is used to produce possible damage scenarios that correspond to 1% shift in the first natural frequencies. Although simple in nature, this model seems to deliver a realistic response of the structure. This is shown by comparing the response at the top of the structure to the actual measurement during a small earthquake. This is a preliminary study indicating the potential of the stretching method for structural health monitoring of historical monuments. The results are very promising. Further analysis is necessary requiring the deployment of the instrumentation (possibly with additional instruments) for a longer period of time
New 60-cm Radio Survey Telescope with the Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for the 200 GHz Band
We have upgraded the 60-cm radio survey telescope located in Nobeyama, Japan.
We developed a new waveguide-type sideband-separating SIS mixer for the
telescope, which enables the simultaneous detection of distinct molecular
emission lines both in the upper and lower sidebands. Over the RF frequency
range of 205-240 GHz, the single-sideband receiver noise temperatures of the
new mixer are 40-100 K for the 4.0-8.0 GHz IF frequency band. The image
rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB over the same range. For the dual IF
signals obtained by the receiver, we have developed two sets of acousto-optical
spectrometers and a telescope control system. Using the new telescope system,
we successfully detected the 12CO (J=2-1) and 13CO (J=2-1) emission lines
simultaneously toward Orion KL in 2005 March. Using the waveguide-type
sideband-separating SIS mixer for the 200 GHz band, we have initiated the first
simultaneous 12CO (J=2-1) and 13CO (J=2-1) survey of the galactic plane as well
as large-scale mapping observations of nearby molecular clouds.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ, version with

We review a study of the Internet traffic properties. We analyze under what
conditions the reported results could be reproduced. Relations of results of
passive measurements and those of modelling are also discussed. An example of
