Throughput Maximization for UAV-Aided Backscatter Communication Networks
This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided backscatter communication (BackCom) networks, where the UAV is leveraged to help the backscatter device (BD) forward signals to the receiver. Based on the presence or absence of a direct link between BD and receiver, two protocols, namely transmit-backscatter (TB) protocol and transmit-backscatter-relay (TBR) protocol, are proposed to utilize the UAV to assist the BD. In particular, we formulate the system throughput maximization problems for the two protocols by jointly optimizing the time allocation, reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory. Different static/dynamic circuit power consumption models for the two protocols are analyzed. The resulting optimization problems are shown to be non-convex, which are challenging to solve. We first consider the dynamic circuit power consumption model, and decompose the original problems into three sub-problems, namely time allocation optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and reflection coefficient, reflection coefficient optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and time allocation, and UAV trajectory optimization with fixed reflection coefficient and time allocation. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed for both protocols by leveraging the block coordinate descent method and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. In addition, for the static circuit power consumption model, we obtain the optimal time allocation with a given reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory and the optimal reflection coefficient with low computational complexity by using the Lagrangian dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed protocols are able to achieve significant throughput gains over the compared benchmarks
Physical Layer Service Integration in 5G: Potentials and Challenges
High transmission rate and secure communication have been identified as the
key targets that need to be effectively addressed by fifth generation (5G)
wireless systems. In this context, the concept of physical-layer security
becomes attractive, as it can establish perfect security using only the
characteristics of wireless medium. Nonetheless, to further increase the
spectral efficiency, an emerging concept, termed physical-layer service
integration (PHY-SI), has been recognized as an effective means. Its basic idea
is to combine multiple coexisting services, i.e., multicast/broadcast service
and confidential service, into one integral service for one-time transmission
at the transmitter side. This article first provides a tutorial on typical
PHY-SI models. Furthermore, we propose some state-of-the-art solutions to
improve the overall performance of PHY-SI in certain important communication
scenarios. In particular, we highlight the extension of several concepts
borrowed from conventional single-service communications, such as artificial
noise (AN), eigenmode transmission etc., to the scenario of PHY-SI. These
techniques are shown to be effective in the design of reliable and robust
PHY-SI schemes. Finally, several potential research directions are identified
for future work.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
A Survey on Energy Optimization Techniques in UAV-Based Cellular Networks: From Conventional to Machine Learning Approaches
Wireless communication networks have been witnessing an unprecedented demand
due to the increasing number of connected devices and emerging bandwidth-hungry
applications. Albeit many competent technologies for capacity enhancement
purposes, such as millimeter wave communications and network densification,
there is still room and need for further capacity enhancement in wireless
communication networks, especially for the cases of unusual people gatherings,
such as sport competitions, musical concerts, etc. Unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) have been identified as one of the promising options to enhance the
capacity due to their easy implementation, pop up fashion operation, and
cost-effective nature. The main idea is to deploy base stations on UAVs and
operate them as flying base stations, thereby bringing additional capacity to
where it is needed. However, because the UAVs mostly have limited energy
storage, their energy consumption must be optimized to increase flight time. In
this survey, we investigate different energy optimization techniques with a
top-level classification in terms of the optimization algorithm employed;
conventional and machine learning (ML). Such classification helps understand
the state of the art and the current trend in terms of methodology. In this
regard, various optimization techniques are identified from the related
literature, and they are presented under the above mentioned classes of
employed optimization methods. In addition, for the purpose of completeness, we
include a brief tutorial on the optimization methods and power supply and
charging mechanisms of UAVs. Moreover, novel concepts, such as reflective
intelligent surfaces and landing spot optimization, are also covered to capture
the latest trend in the literature.Comment: 41 pages, 5 Figures, 6 Tables. Submitted to Open Journal of

Time allocation optimization and trajectory design in UAV-assisted energy and spectrum harvesting network
The scarcity of energy resources and spectrum resources has become an urgent problem with the exponential increase of communication devices. Meanwhile, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is widely used to help communication network recently due to its maneuverability and flexibility. In this paper, we consider a UAV-assisted energy and spectrum harvesting (ESH) network to better solve the spectrum and energy scarcity problem, where nearby secondary users (SUs) harvest energy from the base station (BS) and perform data transmission to the BS, while remote SUs harvest energy from both BS and UAV but only transmit data to UAV to reduce the influence of near-far problem. We propose an unaligned time allocation scheme (UTAS) in which the uplink phase and downlink phase of nearby SUs and remote SUs are unaligned to achieve more flexible time schedule, including schemes (a) and (b) in remote SUs due to the half-duplex of energy harvesting circuit. In addition, maximum throughput optimization problems are formulated for nearby SUs and remote SUs respectively to find the optimal time allocation. The optimization problem can be divided into three cases according to the relationship between practical data volume and theoretical throughput to avoid the waste of time resource. The expressions of optimal energy harvesting time and data transmission time of each node are derived. Lastly, a successive convex approximation based iterative algorithm (SCAIA) is designed to get the optimal UAV trajectory in broadcast mode. Simulation results show that the proposed UTAS can achieve better performance than traditional time allocation schemes
IEEE Access Special Section Editorial: Wirelessly Powered Networks, and Technologies
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is, by definition, a process that occurs in any system where electrical energy is transmitted from a power source to a load without the connection of electrical conductors. WPT is the driving technology that will enable the next stage in the current consumer electronics revolution, including battery-less sensors, passive RF identification (RFID), passive wireless sensors, the Internet of Things and 5G, and machine-to-machine solutions. WPT-enabled devices can be powered by harvesting energy from the surroundings, including electromagnetic (EM) energy, leading to a new communication networks paradigm, the Wirelessly Powered Networks
Wireless Powering Internet of Things with UAVs: Challenges and Opportunities
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to overcome the deployment
constraint of Internet of Things (IoT) in remote or rural area. Wirelessly
powered communications (WPC) can address the battery limitation of IoT devices
through transferring wireless power to IoT devices. The integration of UAVs and
WPC, namely UAV-enabled Wireless Powering IoT (Ue-WPIoT) can greatly extend the
IoT applications from cities to remote or rural areas. In this article, we
present a state-of-the-art overview of Ue-WPIoT by first illustrating the
working flow of Ue-WPIoT and discussing the challenges. We then introduce the
enabling technologies in realizing Ue-WPIoT. Simulation results validate the
effectiveness of the enabling technologies in Ue-WPIoT. We finally outline the
future directions and open issues.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Energy-efficient non-orthogonal multiple access for wireless communication system
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as a potential solution for enhancing the throughput of next-generation wireless communications. NOMA is a potential option for 5G networks due to its superiority in providing better spectrum efficiency (SE) compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA). From the perspective of green communication, energy efficiency (EE) has become a new performance indicator. A systematic literature review is conducted to investigate the available energy efficient approach researchers have employed in NOMA. We identified 19 subcategories related to EE in NOMA out of 108 publications where 92 publications are from the IEEE website. To help the reader comprehend, a summary for each category is explained and elaborated in detail. From the literature review, it had been observed that NOMA can enhance the EE of wireless communication systems. At the end of this survey, future research particularly in machine learning algorithms such as reinforcement learning (RL) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for NOMA are also discussed
