Using the Mass Storage System at ZIB within I3HP
In the framework of I3HP there are two Transnational Access Activities
related to Computational Hadron Physics. One of these activities is access to
the mass storage system at Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum fuer Informationstechnik Berlin
(ZIB). European lattice physics collaborations can apply for mass storage
capacity in order to store and share their configurations or other data (see
http://www.zib.de/i3hp/). In this paper formal and technical aspects of usage
as well as the conformance to the International Lattice DataGrid (ILDG) are

POOL File Catalog, Collection and Metadata Components
The POOL project is the common persistency framework for the LHC experiments
to store petabytes of experiment data and metadata in a distributed and grid
enabled way. POOL is a hybrid event store consisting of a data streaming layer
and a relational layer. This paper describes the design of file catalog,
collection and metadata components which are not part of the data streaming
layer of POOL and outlines how POOL aims to provide transparent and efficient
data access for a wide range of environments and use cases - ranging from a
large production site down to a single disconnected laptops. The file catalog
is the central POOL component translating logical data references to physical
data files in a grid environment. POOL collections with their associated
metadata provide an abstract way of accessing experiment data via their logical

Digital Preservation Services : State of the Art Analysis
Research report funded by the DC-NET project.An overview of the state of the art in service provision for digital preservation and curation. Its focus is on the areas where bridging the gaps is needed between e-Infrastructures and efficient and forward-looking digital preservation services. Knowledge discovery through creating formal contexts
Knowledge discovery is important for systems that have computational intelligence in helping them learn and adapt to changing environments. By representing, in a formal way, the context in which an intelligent system operates, it is possible to discover knowledge through an emerging data technology called formal concept analysis (FCA). This paper describes a tool called FcaBedrock that converts data into formal contexts for FCA. This paper describes how, through a process of guided automation, data preparation techniques such as attribute exclusion and value restriction allow data to be interpreted to meet the requirements of the analysis. Examples are given of how formal contexts can be created using FcaBedrock and then analysed for knowledge discovery, using real datasets. Creating formal contexts using FcaBedrock is shown to be straightforward and versatile. Large datasets are easily converted into a standard FCA format
The Serums Tool-Chain:Ensuring Security and Privacy of Medical Data in Smart Patient-Centric Healthcare Systems
Digital technology is permeating all aspects of human society and life. This leads to humans becoming highly dependent on digital devices, including upon digital: assistance, intelligence, and decisions. A major concern of this digital dependence is the lack of human oversight or intervention in many of the ways humans use this technology. This dependence and reliance on digital technology raises concerns in how humans trust such systems, and how to ensure digital technology behaves appropriately. This works considers recent developments and projects that combine digital technology and artificial intelligence with human society. The focus is on critical scenarios where failure of digital technology can lead to significant harm or even death. We explore how to build trust for users of digital technology in such scenarios and considering many different challenges for digital technology. The approaches applied and proposed here address user trust along many dimensions and aim to build collaborative and empowering use of digital technologies in critical aspects of human society
Digital preservation strategies for AV content
The mass digitisation of analogue archive holdings plus the transition to tapeless production for new content means AV archives inevitably face the prospect of file-based archiving solutions using IT storage technology. But what is the long-term Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of these systems, which file formats should be used, what storage technologies make sense, what are the risks involved, what is the additional cost of managing these risks, and what new software approaches can be applied? These are all issues being explored by major broadcasters, national archives and technology specialists in the European PrestoPrime project and the UK AVATAR-m project
