    Exploration of audiovisual heritage using audio indexing technology

    This paper discusses audio indexing tools that have been implemented for the disclosure of Dutch audiovisual cultural heritage collections. It explains the role of language models and their adaptation to historical settings and the adaptation of acoustic models for homogeneous audio collections. In addition to the benefits of cross-media linking, the requirements for successful tuning and improvement of available tools for indexing the heterogeneous A/V collections from the cultural heritage domain are reviewed. And finally the paper argues that research is needed to cope with the varying information needs for different types of users

    Automatic prosodic variations modelling for language and dialect discrimination

    International audienceThis paper addresses the problem of modelling prosody for language identification. The aim is to create a system that can be used prior to any linguistic work to show if prosodic differences among languages or dialects can be automatically determined. In previous papers, we defined a prosodic unit, the pseudo-syllable. Rhythmic modelling has proven the relevance of the pseudo-syllable unit for automatic language identification. In this paper, we propose to model the prosodic variations, that is to say model sequences of prosodic units. This is achieved by the separation of phrase and accentual components of intonation. We propose an independent coding of those components on differentiated scales of duration. Short-term and long-term language-dependent sequences of labels are modelled by n-gram models. The performance of the system is demonstrated by experiments on read speech and evaluated by experiments on spontaneous speech. Finally, an experiment is described on the discrimination of Arabic dialects, for which there is a lack of linguistic studies, notably on prosodic comparisons. We show that our system is able to clearly identify the dialectal areas, leading to the hypothesis that those dialects have prosodic differences

    An Easy-to-use and Robust Approach for the Differentially Private De-Identification of Clinical Textual Documents

    Unstructured textual data is at the heart of healthcare systems. For obvious privacy reasons, these documents are not accessible to researchers as long as they contain personally identifiable information. One way to share this data while respecting the legislative framework (notably GDPR or HIPAA) is, within the medical structures, to de-identify it, i.e. to detect the personal information of a person through a Named Entity Recognition (NER) system and then replacing it to make it very difficult to associate the document with the person. The challenge is having reliable NER and substitution tools without compromising confidentiality and consistency in the document. Most of the conducted research focuses on English medical documents with coarse substitutions by not benefiting from advances in privacy. This paper shows how an efficient and differentially private de-identification approach can be achieved by strengthening the less robust de-identification method and by adapting state-of-the-art differentially private mechanisms for substitution purposes. The result is an approach for de-identifying clinical documents in French language, but also generalizable to other languages and whose robustness is mathematically proven

    Multimodal Document Analytics for Banking Process Automation

    In response to growing FinTech competition and the need for improved operational efficiency, this research focuses on understanding the potential of advanced document analytics, particularly using multimodal models, in banking processes. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the diverse banking document landscape, highlighting the opportunities for efficiency gains through automation and advanced analytics techniques in the customer business. Building on the rapidly evolving field of natural language processing (NLP), we illustrate the potential of models such as LayoutXLM, a cross-lingual, multimodal, pre-trained model, for analyzing diverse documents in the banking sector. This model performs a text token classification on German company register extracts with an overall F1 score performance of around 80\%. Our empirical evidence confirms the critical role of layout information in improving model performance and further underscores the benefits of integrating image information. Interestingly, our study shows that over 75% F1 score can be achieved with only 30% of the training data, demonstrating the efficiency of LayoutXLM. Through addressing state-of-the-art document analysis frameworks, our study aims to enhance process efficiency and demonstrate the real-world applicability and benefits of multimodal models within banking.Comment: A Preprin

    Migration Reframed? A multilingual analysis on the stance shift in Europe during the Ukrainian crisis

    The war in Ukraine seems to have positively changed the attitude toward the critical societal topic of migration in Europe – at least towards refugees from Ukraine. We investigate whether this impression is substantiated by how the topic is reflected in online news and social media, thus linking the representation of the issue on the Web to its perception in society. For this purpose, we combine and adapt leading-edge automatic text processing for a novel multilingual stance detection approach. Starting from 5.5M Twitter posts published by 565 European news outlets in one year, beginning September 2021, plus replies, we perform a multilingual analysis of migration-related media coverage and associated social media interaction for Europe and selected European countries. The results of our analysis show that there is actually a reframing of the discussion illustrated by the terminology change, e.g., from “migrant” to “refugee”, often even accentuated with phrases such as “real refugees”. However, concerning a stance shift in public perception, the picture is more diverse than expected. All analyzed cases show a noticeable temporal stance shift around the start of the war in Ukraine.
