A flexible approach for mapping between object-oriented databases and xml. A two way method based on an object graph.
One of the most popular challenges facing academia and industry is the development
of effective techniques and tools for maximizing the availability of data as the most
valuable source of knowledge. The internet has dominated as the core for
maximizing data availability and XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has emerged
and is being gradually accepted as the universal standard format for platform
independent publishing and exchanging data over the Internet. On the other hand,
there remain large amount of data held in structured databases and database
management systems have been traditionally used for the effective storage and
manipulation of large volumes of data. This raised the need for effective
methodologies capable of smoothly transforming data between different formats in
general and between XML and structured databases in particular. This dissertation
addresses the issue by proposing a two-way mapping approach between XML and
object-oriented databases. The basic steps of the proposed approach are applied in a
systematic way to produce a graph from the source and then transform the graph into
the destination format. In other words, the derived graph summarizes characteristics
of the source whether XML (elements and attributes) or object-oriented database
(classes, inheritance and nesting hierarchies). Then, the developed methodology
classifies nodes and links from the graph into the basic constructs of the destination,
i.e., elements and attributes for XML or classes, inheritance and nesting hierarchies
for object-oriented databases. The methodology has been successfully implemented
and illustrative case studies are presented in this document

Information Integration - the process of integration, evolution and versioning
At present, many information sources are available wherever you are. Most of the time, the information needed is spread across several of those information sources. Gathering this information is a tedious and time consuming job. Automating this process would assist the user in its task. Integration of the information sources provides a global information source with all information needed present. All of these information sources also change over time. With each change of the information source, the schema of this source can be changed as well. The data contained in the information source, however, cannot be changed every time, due to the huge amount of data that would have to be converted in order to conform to the most recent schema.\ud
In this report we describe the current methods to information integration, evolution and versioning. We distinguish between integration of schemas and integration of the actual data. We also show some key issues when integrating XML data sources
State-of-the-art on evolution and reactivity
This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on
the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages
to be carried out within the Rewerse project.
From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of
interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of
the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give
an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs;
in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and
in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks
Innovative Evaluation System â IESM: An Architecture for the Database Management System for Mobile Application
As the mobile applications are constantly facing a rapid development in the recent years especially in the academic environment such as student response system [1-8] used in universities and other educational institutions; there has not been reported an effective and scalable Database Management System to support fast and reliable data storage and retrieval. This paper presents Database Management Architecture for an Innovative Evaluation System based on Mobile Learning Applications. The need for a relatively stable, independent and extensible data model for faster data storage and retrieval is analyzed and investigated. It concludes by emphasizing further investigation for high throughput so as to support multimedia data such as video clips, images and documents
Mediated data integration and transformation for web service-based software architectures
Service-oriented architecture using XML-based web services has been widely accepted by many organisations as the standard infrastructure to integrate heterogeneous and autonomous data sources. As a result, many Web service providers are built up on top of the data sources to share the data by supporting provided and required interfaces and methods of data access in a unified manner. In the context of data integration, problems arise when Web services are assembled to deliver an integrated view of data, adaptable to the specific needs of individual clients and providers. Traditional approaches of data integration and transformation are not suitable to automate the construction of connectors dedicated to connect selected Web services to render integrated and tailored views of data. We propose a declarative approach that addresses the oftenneglected data integration and adaptivity aspects of serviceoriented
architecture
Transparent Persistence with Java Data Objects
Flexible and performant Persistency Service is a necessary component of any
HEP Software Framework. The building of a modular, non-intrusive and performant
persistency component have been shown to be very difficult task. In the past,
it was very often necessary to sacrifice modularity to achieve acceptable
performance. This resulted in the strong dependency of the overall Frameworks
on their Persistency subsystems.
Recent development in software technology has made possible to build a
Persistency Service which can be transparently used from other Frameworks. Such
Service doesn't force a strong architectural constraints on the overall
Framework Architecture, while satisfying high performance requirements. Java
Data Object standard (JDO) has been already implemented for almost all major
databases. It provides truly transparent persistency for any Java object (both
internal and external). Objects in other languages can be handled via
transparent proxies. Being only a thin layer on top of a used database, JDO
doesn't introduce any significant performance degradation. Also Aspect-Oriented
Programming (AOP) makes possible to treat persistency as an orthogonal Aspect
of the Application Framework, without polluting it with persistence-specific
concepts.
All these techniques have been developed primarily (or only) for the Java
environment. It is, however, possible to interface them transparently to
Frameworks built in other languages, like for example C++.
Fully functional prototypes of flexible and non-intrusive persistency modules
have been build for several other packages, as for example FreeHEP AIDA and LCG
