    Experimental Test bed to De-Risk the Navy Advanced Development Model

    This paper presents a reduced scale demonstration test-bed at the University of Texas’ Center for Electromechanics (UT-CEM) which is well equipped to support the development and assessment of the anticipated Navy Advanced Development Model (ADM). The subscale ADM test bed builds on collaborative power management experiments conducted as part of the Swampworks Program under the US/UK Project Arrangement as well as non-military applications. The system includes the required variety of sources, loads, and controllers as well as an Opal-RT digital simulator. The test bed architecture is described and the range of investigations that can be carried out on it is highlighted; results of preliminary system simulations and some initial tests are also provided. Subscale ADM experiments conducted on the UT-CEM microgrid can be an important step in the realization of a full-voltage, full-power ADM three-zone demonstrator, providing a test-bed for components, subsystems, controls, and the overall performance of the Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) ship architecture.Center for Electromechanic

    This open access book discusses the energy management for the multi-energy maritime grid, which is the local energy network installed in harbors, ports, ships, ferries, or vessels. The grid consists of generation, storage, and critical loads. It operates either in grid-connected or in islanding modes, under the constraints of both power system and transportation system. With full electrification, the future maritime grids, such as all-electric ships and seaport microgrids, will become “maritime multi-energy system” with the involvement of multiple energy, i.e., electrical power, fossil fuel, and heating/cooling power. With various practical cases, this book provides a cross-disciplinary view of the green and sustainable shipping via the energy management of maritime grids. In this book, the concepts and definitions of the multi-energy maritime grids are given after a comprehensive literature survey, and then the global and regional energy efficiency policies for the maritime transportation are illustrated. After that, it presents energy management methods under different scenarios for all-electric ships and electrified ports. At last, the future research roadmap are overviewed.     A distributed real-time power management scheme for shipboard zonal multi-microgrid system

    The increasing demands of reducing fuel consumption for marine transportation have motivated the use of high fuel efficiency power plants and the development of power management systems (PMS). Current studies on shipboard PMS are mostly categorized as centralized, which are easy to be implemented and able to converge to the global optimum solutions. However, centralized techniques may suffer from the high computational burden and single-point failures. Considering the future trends of marine vessels toward zonal electrical distribution (ZED), distributed PMS are becoming an alternative choice. To achieve the ship high fuel-efficiency operation under high fluctuated propulsion loads, a real-time distributed PMS is developed in this paper that can acquire as good fuel economy as centralized PMS, but with faster computing speed. With a combination of filter-based, rule-based, and optimization-based approaches in a highly computationally efficient manner, the distributed PMS is constructed based on three layers that guarantees not only high fuel efficiency, but also sufficient energy reservation in different sailing modes and even in faulty conditions. Convergence tests and multiple case studies are conducted to prove the effectiveness of the proposed PMS in terms of fast convergence speed, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced resilience.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

In fact, distribution networks are no longer passive systems, considering the current integration rates of new agents such as distributed generation, electrical vehicles and energy storage, which are greatly influencing the way these systems are operated. In addition, the intrinsic DC nature of these components, interfaced to the AC system through power electronics converters, is unlocking the possibility for new distribution topologies based on AC/DC networks.     In IEEE Standards, a Microgrid is defined as a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources with clearly defined electrical boundaries, which acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid and can connect and disconnect from the grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected or island modes. This Special Issue focuses on innovative strategies for the management of the Microgrids and, in response to the call for papers, six high-quality papers were accepted for publication. Consistent with the instructions in the call for papers and with the feedback received from the reviewers, four papers dealt with different types of supervisory energy management systems of Microgrids (i.e., adaptive neuro-fuzzy wavelet-based controls, cost-efficient power-sharing techniques, and two-level hierarchical energy management systems); the proposed energy management systems are of quite general purpose and aim to reduce energy usages and monetary costs.
