PasMoQAP: A Parallel Asynchronous Memetic Algorithm for solving the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem
Multi-Objective Optimization Problems (MOPs) have attracted growing attention
during the last decades. Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) have
been extensively used to address MOPs because are able to approximate a set of
non-dominated high-quality solutions. The Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment
Problem (mQAP) is a MOP. The mQAP is a generalization of the classical QAP
which has been extensively studied, and used in several real-life applications.
The mQAP is defined as having as input several flows between the facilities
which generate multiple cost functions that must be optimized simultaneously.
In this study, we propose PasMoQAP, a parallel asynchronous memetic algorithm
to solve the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem. PasMoQAP is based on
an island model that structures the population by creating sub-populations. The
memetic algorithm on each island individually evolve a reduced population of
solutions, and they asynchronously cooperate by sending selected solutions to
the neighboring islands. The experimental results show that our approach
significatively outperforms all the island-based variants of the
multi-objective evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II. We show that PasMoQAP is a
suitable alternative to solve the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Accepted at Conference on Evolutionary

A Hierachical Evolutionary Algorithm for Multiobjective Optimization in IMRT
Purpose: Current inverse planning methods for IMRT are limited because they
are not designed to explore the trade-offs between the competing objectives
between the tumor and normal tissues. Our goal was to develop an efficient
multiobjective optimization algorithm that was flexible enough to handle any
form of objective function and that resulted in a set of Pareto optimal plans.
Methods: We developed a hierarchical evolutionary multiobjective algorithm
designed to quickly generate a diverse Pareto optimal set of IMRT plans that
meet all clinical constraints and reflect the trade-offs in the plans. The top
level of the hierarchical algorithm is a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm
(MOEA). The genes of the individuals generated in the MOEA are the parameters
that define the penalty function minimized during an accelerated deterministic
IMRT optimization that represents the bottom level of the hierarchy. The MOEA
incorporates clinical criteria to restrict the search space through protocol
objectives and then uses Pareto optimality among the fitness objectives to
select individuals.
Results: Acceleration techniques implemented on both levels of the
hierarchical algorithm resulted in short, practical runtimes for optimizations.
The MOEA improvements were evaluated for example prostate cases with one target
and two OARs. The modified MOEA dominated 11.3% of plans using a standard
genetic algorithm package. By implementing domination advantage and protocol
objectives, small diverse populations of clinically acceptable plans that were
only dominated 0.2% by the Pareto front could be generated in a fraction of an
hour.
Conclusions: Our MOEA produces a diverse Pareto optimal set of plans that
meet all dosimetric protocol criteria in a feasible amount of time. It
optimizes not only beamlet intensities but also objective function parameters
on a patient-specific basis
Ergonomic Chair Design by Fusing Qualitative and Quantitative Criteria using Interactive Genetic Algorithms
This paper emphasizes the necessity of formally bringing qualitative and
quantitative criteria of ergonomic design together, and provides a novel
complementary design framework with this aim. Within this framework, different
design criteria are viewed as optimization objectives; and design solutions are
iteratively improved through the cooperative efforts of computer and user. The
framework is rooted in multi-objective optimization, genetic algorithms and
interactive user evaluation. Three different algorithms based on the framework
are developed, and tested with an ergonomic chair design problem. The parallel
and multi-objective approaches show promising results in fitness convergence,
design diversity and user satisfaction metrics
Set-based Multiobjective Fitness Landscapes: A Preliminary Study
Fitness landscape analysis aims to understand the geometry of a given
optimization problem in order to design more efficient search algorithms.
However, there is a very little knowledge on the landscape of multiobjective
problems. In this work, following a recent proposal by Zitzler et al. (2010),
we consider multiobjective optimization as a set problem. Then, we give a
general definition of set-based multiobjective fitness landscapes. An
experimental set-based fitness landscape analysis is conducted on the
multiobjective NK-landscapes with objective correlation. The aim is to adapt
and to enhance the comprehensive design of set-based multiobjective search
approaches, motivated by an a priori analysis of the corresponding set problem

SBSE has been applied to problems throughout the SE lifecycle, from requirements and project planning to maintenance and reengineering. The approach is attractive because it offers a suite of adaptive automated and semiautomated solutions in situations typified by large complex problem spaces with multiple competing and conflicting objectives.

Integrating continuous differential evolution with discrete local search for meander line RFID antenna design
The automated design of meander line RFID antennas is a discrete self-avoiding walk(SAW) problem for which efficiency is to be maximized while resonant frequency is to beminimized. This work presents a novel exploration of how discrete local search may beincorporated into a continuous solver such as differential evolution (DE). A prior DE algorithmfor this problem that incorporates an adaptive solution encoding and a bias favoringantennas with low resonant frequency is extended by the addition of the backbite localsearch operator and a variety of schemes for reintroducing modified designs into the DEpopulation. The algorithm is extremely competitive with an existing ACO approach and thetechnique is transferable to other SAW problems and other continuous solvers. The findingsindicate that careful reintegration of discrete local search results into the continuous populationis necessary for effective performance
A bi-objective genetic algorithm approach to risk mitigation in project scheduling
A problem of risk mitigation in project scheduling is formulated as a bi-objective optimization problem, where the expected makespan and the expected total cost are both to be minimized. The expected total cost is the sum of four cost components: overhead cost, activity execution cost, cost of reducing risks and penalty cost for tardiness. Risks for activities are predefined. For each risk at an activity, various levels are defined, which correspond to the results of different preventive measures. Only those risks with a probable impact on the duration of the related activity are considered here. Impacts of risks are not only accounted for through the expected makespan but are also translated into cost and thus have an impact on the expected total cost. An MIP model and a heuristic solution approach based on genetic algorithms (GAs) is proposed. The experiments conducted indicate that GAs provide a fast and effective solution approach to the problem. For smaller problems, the results obtained by the GA are very good. For larger problems, there is room for improvement
Racing Multi-Objective Selection Probabilities
In the context of Noisy Multi-Objective Optimization, dealing with
uncertainties requires the decision maker to define some preferences about how
to handle them, through some statistics (e.g., mean, median) to be used to
evaluate the qualities of the solutions, and define the corresponding Pareto
set. Approximating these statistics requires repeated samplings of the
population, drastically increasing the overall computational cost. To tackle
this issue, this paper proposes to directly estimate the probability of each
individual to be selected, using some Hoeffding races to dynamically assign the
estimation budget during the selection step. The proposed racing approach is
validated against static budget approaches with NSGA-II on noisy versions of
the ZDT benchmark functions
