Trust in Digital Currency Enabled Transactions Model

    Get PDF
This research extends theories of trust from e-commerce to incorporate digital currencies. In particular trust in business to consumer e-commerce transactions carried out using digital currencies such as Bitcoin is explored. A model of online trust is considered to be valid in this different transaction context but the significance of each construct changes and some extensions are necessary. The role of institutional trust in transactions has differences that are explored and new constructs are suggested. These new constructs are incorporated into a new digital currency enabled transactions trust model. The results support the validity of the role of the rate of adoption and reputation of digital currencies as part of situational normality. The nature of the digital currency itself, the digital currency payment system, the payment intermediary, the digital currency P2P infrastructure, self-imposed and external regulation are also considered valid as part of structural assurance. These findings can be used by those developing the related technology, the vendors and regulatory institutions to increase consumer trust in digital currency enabled transactions in order to extend adoption and use

Digital currencies (DC) continue to gain public and research attention as an alternative paradigm of currency, its value and exchange. Because of the growing DC research in the Information Systems (IS) domain, it is necessary to distinguish between existing DC research coverage and areas for future exploration. This article offers an up to date review of IS research on digital currencies in terms of the locus and focus of issues , theories, methods, and findings in order to provide direction for future research. The study uses a systematic literature review method to examine IS articles published between 2010 and 2016. The review identified eighteen articles in highly ranked IS journals and conferences. Based on results from our investigation, we chart out end-user, organisation, and systems related future research directions

E-Government is a global trend with far-reaching benefits if implemented in the optimal way. All nations irrespective of whether they are considered as developed or developing economies, invest in the formation of strategies furthering their e-government agenda. While e-government has attracted extensive interest for over a decade leading to a maturing field, developing countries that are EU members have some particularities that must be taken into account. This research focuses on the critical success factors of e- government adoption by developing EU countries, using the Republic of Cyprus as a case study. This research identifies the financial position of a nation and its e-readiness level, as well as the infrastructure facilities and technological innovations, political and legal frameworks as key factors that influence the level of e-government adoption. Furthermore, organisational and institutional aspects, as well as the socio- cultural characteristics, should not be underestimated, as these factors are crucial barriers to e-government adoption. The specific country’s environmental cognition and consciousness is found to be more influential in this case than what literature on other cases suggest. Transformational leadership is recommended as a way motivate, build trust and create the necessary shared vision

Information bias and trust in bitcoin speculation

The Internet pervades modern life, offering up opportunities to connect, inform and be informed. As the range and number of sources for information online explode, how people select and interpret information has become a pertinent area for study, not least in light of the prevalence of fake-news. People are well known to act upon information they believe to be trustworthy and where the decision to act incurs risk, an inability to accurately select and assess the credibility of information presents a challenge. Bitcoin, the nascent crypto-currency, presents a domain within which profound financial risk abounds. Even for those armed with experience and knowledge there are numerous challenges to assessing risk, especially as sources of Bitcoin information can be observed to be partisan and of questionable accuracy. Within the domain of bitcoin speculation, this thesis asks the central research question of: are people able to select and correctly evaluate information they might rely upon to make decisions? In addressing this research question, this thesis offers - through the application of a psychological model of informational trust to bitcoin speculators - two fundamental contributions: Firstly, that these users are able to identify relevant news without a reliance upon confirmation bias. Secondly, that a notable percentage of users are not evaluating the credibility of online news by expertly interpreting the fundamentals of information but, rather deferring their trust to either the source news website or a more broad trust of information on the Internet. For these users, chance or luck may mean that they are basing their decisions upon factually accurate news. But this is a position which makes them particularly vulnerable to fake-news where it is spread via sources which they might trust. This position of susceptibility provides evidence to support further security research of both the prevalence of, and counter-measures for fake-news
