    Dynamic clamp with StdpC software

    Dynamic clamp is a powerful method that allows the introduction of artificial electrical components into target cells to simulate ionic conductances and synaptic inputs. This method is based on a fast cycle of measuring the membrane potential of a cell, calculating the current of a desired simulated component using an appropriate model and injecting this current into the cell. Here we present a dynamic clamp protocol using free, fully integrated, open-source software (StdpC, for spike timing-dependent plasticity clamp). Use of this protocol does not require specialist hardware, costly commercial software, experience in real-time operating systems or a strong programming background. The software enables the configuration and operation of a wide range of complex and fully automated dynamic clamp experiments through an intuitive and powerful interface with a minimal initial lead time of a few hours. After initial configuration, experimental results can be generated within minutes of establishing cell recording

    BLAST Autonomous Daytime Star Cameras

    We have developed two redundant daytime star cameras to provide the fine pointing solution for the balloon-borne submillimeter telescope, BLAST. The cameras are capable of providing a reconstructed pointing solution with an absolute accuracy < 5 arcseconds. They are sensitive to stars down to magnitudes ~ 9 in daytime float conditions. Each camera combines a 1 megapixel CCD with a 200 mm f/2 lens to image a 2 degree x 2.5 degree field of the sky. The instruments are autonomous. An internal computer controls the temperature, adjusts the focus, and determines a real-time pointing solution at 1 Hz.     Qualitative mechanism models and the rationalization of procedures

    A qualitative, cluster-based approach to the representation of hydraulic systems is described and its potential for generating and explaining procedures is demonstrated. Many ideas are formalized and implemented as part of an interactive, computer-based system. The system allows for designing, displaying, and reasoning about hydraulic systems. The interactive system has an interface consisting of three windows: a design/control window, a cluster window, and a diagnosis/plan window. A qualitative mechanism model for the ORS (Orbital Refueling System) is presented to coordinate with ongoing research on this system being conducted at NASA Ames Research Center

    GALFIT-CORSAIR: implementing the core-Sersic model into GALFIT

    We introduce GALFIT-CORSAIR: a publicly available, fully retro-compatible modification of the 2D fitting software GALFIT (v.3) which adds an implementation of the core-Sersic model. We demonstrate the software by fitting the images of NGC 5557 and NGC 5813, which have been previously identified as core-Sersic galaxies by their 1D radial light profiles. These two examples are representative of different dust obscuration conditions, and of bulge/disk decomposition. To perform the analysis, we obtained deep Hubble Legacy Archive (HLA) mosaics in the F555W filter (~V-band). We successfully reproduce the results of the previous 1D analysis, modulo the intrinsic differences between the 1D and the 2D fitting procedures. The code and the analysis procedure described here have been developed for the first coherent 2D analysis of a sample of core-Sersic galaxies, which will be presented in a forth-coming paper. As the 2D analysis provides better constraining on multi-component fitting, and is fully seeing-corrected, it will yield complementary constraints on the missing mass in depleted galaxy cores.Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP; A binary version of GALFIT-CORSAIR is publicly available at http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/~pbonfini/galfit-corsair

    Mining Network Events using Traceroute Empathy

    In the never-ending quest for tools that enable an ISP to smooth troubleshooting and improve awareness of network behavior, very much effort has been devoted in the collection of data by active and passive measurement at the data plane and at the control plane level. Exploitation of collected data has been mostly focused on anomaly detection and on root-cause analysis. Our objective is somewhat in the middle. We consider traceroutes collected by a network of probes and aim at introducing a practically applicable methodology to quickly spot measurements that are related to high-impact events happened in the network. Such filtering process eases further in- depth human-based analysis, for example with visual tools which are effective only when handling a limited amount of data. We introduce the empathy relation between traceroutes as the cornerstone of our formal characterization of the traceroutes related to a network event. Based on this model, we describe an algorithm that finds traceroutes related to high-impact events in an arbitrary set of measurements.     STS-45 Space Shuttle mission report

    The STS-45 Space Shuttle Program Mission Report contains a summary of the vehicle subsystem operations during the forty-sixth flight of the Space Shuttle Program and the eleventh flight of the Orbiter Vehicle Atlantis (OV-104). In addition to the Atlantis vehicle, the flight vehicle consisted of the following: an External Tank (ET) designated as ET-44 (LWT-37); three Space Shuttle main engines (SSME's), which were serial numbers 2024, 2012, and 2028 in positions 1, 2, and 3, respectively; and two Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB's) designated as BI-049. The lightweight redesigned Solid Rocket Motors (RSRM's) installed in each of the SRB's were designated as 360L021A for the left SRM and 360W021B for the right SRM. The primary objective of this mission was to successfully perform the planned operations of the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science-1 (ATLAS-1) and the Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Instrument (SSBUV) payloads. The secondary objectives were to successfully perform all operations necessary to support the requirements of the following: the Space Tissue Loss-01 (STL-01) experiment; the Radiation Monitoring Equipment-3 (RME-3) experiment; the Visual Function Tester-2 (VFT-2) experiment; the Cloud Logic to Optimize use of Defense System (CLOUDS-1A) experiment; the Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment 2 (SAREX-2) Configuration B; the Investigation into Polymer Membranes Processing experiment; and the Get-Away Special (GAS) payload G-229. The Ultraviolet Plume Instrument (UVPI) was a payload of opportunity that required no special maneuvers. In addition to the primary and secondary objectives, the crew was tasked to perform as many as 10 Development Test Objectives (DTO'S) and 14 Detailed Supplementary Objectives (DSO's)

    Online discussion compensates for suboptimal timing of supportive information presentation in a digitally supported learning environment

    This study used a sequential set-up to investigate the consecutive effects of timing of supportive information presentation (information before vs. information during the learning task clusters) in interactive digital learning materials (IDLMs) and type of collaboration (personal discussion vs. online discussion) in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) on student knowledge construction. Students (N = 87) were first randomly assigned to the two information presentation conditions to work individually on a case-based assignment in IDLM. Students who received information during learning task clusters tended to show better results on knowledge construction than those who received information only before each cluster. The students within the two separate information presentation conditions were then randomly assigned to pairs to discuss the outcomes of their assignments under either the personal discussion or online discussion condition in CSCL. When supportive information had been presented before each learning task cluster, online discussion led to better results than personal discussion. When supportive information had been presented during the learning task clusters, however, the online and personal discussion conditions had no differential effect on knowledge construction. Online discussion in CSCL appeared to compensate for suboptimal timing of presentation of supportive information before the learning task clusters in IDLM
