    Hygrothermal effects on mechanical behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates beyond initial failure

    An investigation was conducted to determine the critical load levels and associated cracking beyond which a multidirectional laminate can be considered as structurally failed. Graphite/epoxy laminates were loaded to different strain levels up to ultimate failure. Transverse matrix cracking was monitored by acoustic and optical methods. Residual stiffness and strength that were parallel and perpendicular to the cracks were determined and related to the environmental/loading history. Results indicate that cracking density in the transverse layers has no major effect on laminate residual properties as long as the angle ply layers retain their structural integrity. Exposure to hot water revealed that cracking had only a small effect on absorption and reduced swelling when these specimens were compared with uncracked specimens. Cracked, moist specimens showed a moderate reduction in strength when compared with their uncracked counterparts. Within the range of environmental/loading conditions of the present study, it is concluded that the transverse cracking process is not crucial in its effect on the structural performance of multidirectional composite laminates

    The Role of Shrinkage Strains Causing Early-Age Cracking in Cast-in-Place Concrete Bridge Decks

    Early-age cracking in cast-in-place reinforced concrete bridge decks is occurring more frequently now than three decades ago and principle factors that lead to early-age deck cracking are not fully understood. A finite element (FE) simulation methodology for assessing the role of shrinkage-induced strains in generating early-age bridge deck cracking is described. The simulations conducted indicate that drying shrinkage appears to be capable of causing transverse (and possibly longitudinal) bridge deck cracks as early as 9 to II days after bridge deck placement. The drying-shrinkage induced stresses would result in transverse cracking over interior pier supports in a typical bridge superstructure considered in the finite element simulations conducted

    Local delamination in laminates with angle ply matrix cracks. Part 1: Tension tests and stress analysis

    Quasi-static tension tests were conducted on AS4/3501-6 graphite epoxy laminates. Dye penetrant enhanced x-radiography was used to document the onset of matrix cracking and the onset of local delaminations at the intersection of the matrix cracks and the free edge. Edge micrographs taken after the onset of damage were used to verify the location of the matrix cracks and local delamination through the laminate thickness. A quasi-3D finite element analysis was conducted to calculate the stresses responsible for matrix cracking in the off-axis plies. Laminated plate theory indicated that the transverse normal stresses were compressive. However, the finite element analysis yielded tensile transverse normal stresses near the free edge. Matrix cracks formed in the off-axis plies near the free edge where in-plane transverse stresses were tensile and had their greatest magnitude. The influence of the matrix crack on interlaminar stresses is also discussed

    This work is devoted so show the appearance of different cracking modes in linearly elastic thin film systems by means of an asymptotic analysis as the thickness tends to zero. By superposing two thin plates, and upon suitable scaling law assumptions on the elasticity and fracture parameters, it is proven that either debonding or transverse cracks can emerge in the limit. A model coupling debonding, transverse cracks and delamination is also discussed

    Damage analysis and fracture toughness evaluation in a thin woven composite laminate under static tension using infrared thermography

    This work deals with the issue of damage growth in thin woven composite laminates subjected to tensile loading. The conducted tensile tests were monitored on-line with an infrared camera, and tested specimens were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Combined with SEM micrographs, observation of heat source fields enabled us to assess the damage sequence. Transverse weft cracking was confirmed to be the main damage mode and fiber breakage was the final damage leading to failure. For cracks which induce little variation of specimen stiffness, the classic “Compliance method” could not be used to compute energy release rate. Hence, we present here a new procedure based on the estimation of heat source fields to calculate the energy release rate associated with transverse weft cracking. The results are then compared to those computed with a simple 3D inverse model of the heat diffusion problem and those presented in the literature

    Fatigue of notched fiber composite laminates. Part 1: Analytical model

    A description is given of a semi-empirical, deterministic analysis for prediction and correlation of fatigue crack growth, residual strength, and fatigue lifetime for fiber composite laminates containing notches (holes). The failure model used for the analysis is based upon composite heterogeneous behavior and experimentally observed failure modes under both static and fatigue loading. The analysis is consistent with the wearout philosophy. Axial cracking and transverse cracking failure modes are treated together in the analysis. Cracking off-axis is handled by making a modification to the axial cracking analysis. The analysis predicts notched laminate failure from unidirectional material fatique properties using constant strain laminate analysis techniques. For multidirectional laminates, it is necessary to know lamina fatique behavior under axial normal stress, transverse normal stress and axial shear stress. Examples of the analysis method are given

    Performance of TenCate Paving Interlayers in Asphalt Concrete Pavements

    As a continued effort of a previously completed project entitled “Performance of TenCate Mirafi PGM-G4 Interlayer-Reinforced Asphalt Pavements in Alaska,” this project evaluated two newly modified paving interlayers (TruPave and Mirapave) through overlay, dynamic modulus tests and low-temperature performance tests. A field survey was conducted to further evaluate the performance of three paving interlayers (G4, G50/50, and G100/100) applied to field sections constructed in May 2013 at Milepost 148–156 Richardson Highway in Alaska. Overlay test results indicate that asphalt concrete (AC) with paving interlayers (TruPave and Mirapave) shows lower reduction in peak load, suggesting better cracking resistance. The dynamic modulus measurement of AC with paving interlayers reveals more rational results from the IDT mode test than the AMPT method due to similar stress conditions in the paving interlayer. With paving interlayers, the temperature sensitivity and cracking potential of AC material were reduced according to the results from the IDT creep test. Field survey results confirm that all sections reinforced with paving interlayers (G4, G50/50, and G100/100) had better cracking resistance than the control section.TenCate Geosynthetics North Americ

    EVALUATION PAVEMENT DISTRESSES USING PAVEMENT CONDITION INDEX

    Pavement deterioration is resulted by both environmental and structural causes. It is difficult to maintain the road on the same specification that was owned at the opening and problems start to appear represented in the pavement cracks, holes and undulations and so on. Recognizing defects and understanding their causes helps us rate pavement condition and select cost-effective repairs. Periodic inspection is necessary to provide current and useful evaluation data. It is recommended that ratings be updated every year. Maintenance is an essential practice in providing for the long-term performance and the esthetic appearance of an asphalt pavement. The purpose of pavement maintenance is to correct deficiencies caused by distresses and to protect the pavement from further damage. A condition rating of the pavement will help determine what pavement maintenance technique is necessary. A methodology was proposed to investigate the pavement condition; this study focuses on flexible pavement. A manual survey is performed following ASTM D 6433. The pavement is divided into sections. Each section is divided into sample units. The type and severity of sample distress is assessed by visual inspection of the pavement sample units and the quantity of each distress is measured. Typically, this procedure requires a team of at least two engineers. The pavement evaluation results from the manual PCI survey revealed that all sections of road were fair condition. Considered the section of road that surveyed, describing the condition pavement of the all road. The pavement that has been studied at Koums area would seem to require maintenance.     Matrix cracking in polymeric composites laminates: Modelling and experiments

    Composites ability to retain functionality in the presence of damage is a crucial safety and economic issue. Generally the first damage mode in composite laminates is matrix cracking, which affects the mechanical properties of the structure long before its load-bearing capacity is exhausted. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the effect of matrix cracking on the behaviour of cross-ply [0/90]s and unbalanced symmetric [0/45]s glass/epoxy laminates loaded statically in tension is performed. Theoretical predictions of stiffness reduction due to damage are based on the Equivalent Constraint Model (ECM), which takes into account concurrent matrix cracking in all plies of the laminate, although matrix cracking under consideration is developing only within the off-axis ply of the laminates. The longitudinal Young’s modulus predictions are compared to experimentally derived data obtained using laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS). The good agreement between predicted and measured values of the reduced longitudinal Young’s modulus validates the ECM model and proves that its basic assumptions are accurate. Thus, the predictions for all the mechanical properties by the ECM model are within a realistic range, while experimental evidence is required for further validation
