Ethernet - a survey on its fields of application
During the last decades, Ethernet progressively became the most widely used local area networking (LAN) technology. Apart from LAN installations, Ethernet became also attractive for many other fields of application, ranging from industry to avionics, telecommunication, and multimedia. The expanded application of this technology is mainly due to its significant assets like reduced cost, backward-compatibility, flexibility, and expandability. However, this new trend raises some problems concerning the services of the protocol and the requirements for each application. Therefore, specific adaptations prove essential to integrate this communication technology in each field of application. Our primary objective is to show how Ethernet has been enhanced to comply with the specific requirements of several application fields, particularly in transport, embedded and multimedia contexts. The paper first describes the common Ethernet LAN technology and highlights its main features. It reviews the most important specific Ethernet versions with respect to each application field’s requirements. Finally, we compare these different fields of application and we particularly focus on the fundamental concepts and the quality of service capabilities of each proposal
Traffic measurement and analysis
Measurement and analysis of real traffic is important to gain knowledge
about the characteristics of the traffic. Without measurement, it is
impossible to build realistic traffic models. It is recent that data
traffic was found to have self-similar properties. In this thesis work
traffic captured on the network at SICS and on the Supernet, is shown to
have this fractal-like behaviour. The traffic is also examined with
respect to which protocols and packet sizes are present and in what
proportions. In the SICS trace most packets are small, TCP is shown to be
the predominant transport protocol and NNTP the most common application.
In contrast to this, large UDP packets sent between not well-known ports
dominates the Supernet traffic. Finally, characteristics of the client
side of the WWW traffic are examined more closely. In order to extract
useful information from the packet trace, web browsers use of TCP and HTTP
is investigated including new features in HTTP/1.1 such as persistent
connections and pipelining. Empirical probability distributions are
derived describing session lengths, time between user clicks and the
amount of data transferred due to a single user click. These probability
distributions make up a simple model of WWW-sessions
The Dynamics of Internet Traffic: Self-Similarity, Self-Organization, and Complex Phenomena
The Internet is the most complex system ever created in human history.
Therefore, its dynamics and traffic unsurprisingly take on a rich variety of
complex dynamics, self-organization, and other phenomena that have been
researched for years. This paper is a review of the complex dynamics of
Internet traffic. Departing from normal treatises, we will take a view from
both the network engineering and physics perspectives showing the strengths and
weaknesses as well as insights of both. In addition, many less covered
phenomena such as traffic oscillations, large-scale effects of worm traffic,

The computer networks research community lacks of shared measurement information. As a consequence, most researchers need to expend a considerable part of their time planning and executing measurements before being able to perform their studies. The lack of shared data also makes it hard to compare and validate results. This report describes our efforts to distribute a portion of our network data through the Simpleweb/University of Twente Traffic Traces Data Repository
Performance comparison between iSCSI and other hardware and software solutions
We report on our investigations on some technologies that can be used to
build disk servers and networks of disk servers using commodity hardware and
software solutions. It focuses on the performance that can be achieved by these
systems and gives measured figures for different configurations.
It is divided into two parts : iSCSI and other technologies and hardware and
software RAID solutions.
The first part studies different technologies that can be used by clients to
access disk servers using a gigabit ethernet network. It covers block access
technologies (iSCSI, hyperSCSI, ENBD). Experimental figures are given for
different numbers of clients and servers.
The second part compares a system based on 3ware hardware RAID controllers, a
system using linux software RAID and IDE cards and a system mixing both
hardware RAID and software RAID. Performance measurements for reading and

A Survey of Green Networking Research
Reduction of unnecessary energy consumption is becoming a major concern in
wired networking, because of the potential economical benefits and of its
expected environmental impact. These issues, usually referred to as "green
networking", relate to embedding energy-awareness in the design, in the devices
and in the protocols of networks. In this work, we first formulate a more
precise definition of the "green" attribute. We furthermore identify a few
paradigms that are the key enablers of energy-aware networking research. We
then overview the current state of the art and provide a taxonomy of the
relevant work, with a special focus on wired networking. At a high level, we
identify four branches of green networking research that stem from different
observations on the root causes of energy waste, namely (i) Adaptive Link Rate,
(ii) Interface proxying, (iii) Energy-aware infrastructures and (iv)
Energy-aware applications. In this work, we do not only explore specific
proposals pertaining to each of the above branches, but also offer a
